Hi Fee
I've not followed this story from the start, but wondered if you should try an Equine Oestopath?
Tom McMullen is based in Dunbar and does work in your area - might be worth giving him a call to see if he can help or suggest someone who could.

Hi Cassandra, thanks for that, yes I've heard of Tom McMullen but I really need someone trained in cranial osteopathy, which he isn't, this is not a 'normal' osteopathy job, nor can it be sorted by the physio or the chiropractor as I know and use excellent ones! Typical!

Guess what was waiting for me when I got to the horses this morning!
She's now been on the feeds the kinesiologist wanted her on for 10 days now and I'm pleased with the difference in her alertness and energy levels. That's funny as I show you a pic of her lying down Between the snoozing that is! Her sleep falling has greatly reduced AND not to mention she's lay down at least twice!!
I know she's not 'fixed' yet but at least I feel I'm on some kind of road (hopefully the right one) instead of the wilderness I've be on. Still not got a cranial osteopath Waiting to hear back, hopefully will know in a few days. Meantime she gets her mctimoney tomorrow and she's to get all her shoes off on Thursday in preparation for this osteopath work! She has to get fortnightly treatments so if I don't have the osteopath in place for two weeks tomorrow it's another mctimoney as it helps her feel better but wont fix the problem. Fingers crossed I get one in place so that she can start the sessions in two weeks.

Thanks guys, I was a bit chuffed when I saw her lying down in the field too I admit!
Well, today Po had a VERY taxing day, she got breakfast, a mctimoney, lots of grazing, a bath, more grazing then dinner, poor girl!
She loves her bath and especially getting her face dried
My arabian princess....she puts up with me
I actually had the camera out taking pics of her hooves. She gets her shoes off on Thursday and I want to keep a log of before/after and if there are any changes as she goes through these treatments. Will need to try to get someone to video her trotting up too. Be good to do a before and after of that as well.
Not heard from the osteopath yet so I left a message, hopefully he calls tomorrow and lets me know if he's taking her on, if not, it's back to the drawing board.
Physio thought she was looking great and I've got some little exercises to keep her ticking over
Fee x

Just to update you as things have progressed these last few days.
The (human) cranial osteopath I phoned a few weeks ago who hasn't worked with or on horses before wanted to do some research and talk to colleagues, which is fair enough. Great news was, he got back to me with the decision to at least come and have a look and do an assessment on her.
That was this morning and he assessed her as an osteopath and as a cranial osteopath. The good news is that the kinesiologist was spot on, she has what he called a 'numb bum' but, he added, not so numb as it's actually very painful. He reckons that it does stem back to her injuries about 12 years ago and that they were so great she probably actually had a fracture on top of all the extensive scarring. He wants me to begin and continue working massaging all the scar tissue.
The BEST news it that he's agreed to begin cranial work on her! Honestly, I could have kissed him when he said he would take her on he and agreed probably everything, including the spavin goes back to this injury!!
He's coming back on Monday to begin cranial work on her. I'm so chuffed! He is being cautious that he can heal/help her, which is understandable as he's new to horses and her condition is chronic. The kinesiologist is going to retest her after her first session to assess if he's hitting the spot so to speak. Fingers crossed for next week then.
Po is understandably fed up, she's in so much pain all the time, no sleep, and such a lot of poking and prodding, vets, physio, in and out of vet hospital. But credit to her, she stood there, once again, being such a good girl, he was really uncertain of horses and she was perfect. I'm sure she knew though and was probably thinking 'At last!! A man who knows what he's doing!' as he very quickly zoomed in on the area. I had to keep her awake as she was zoning out constantly and that's just the assessment. Going to have to prop her up against a wall on Monday I think!
I'm so relieved, I know it's not over or healed, but I've been trying to get my girl fixed for 2 years now and it's so frustrating. Vets would only treat what was there and not consider why that was there, but, to be fair, I was like them up until the beginning of this year. Then I began to say, wait a minute, this can't be that? Why is that? Aren't all these things just symptoms of whatever happened to her pelvis etc etc, but the vets wouldn't listen at that point and would only keep treating the symptoms and not considering the cause and so I had to keep banging the drum.
I phoned the kinesiologist after the osteopath left to give her the good news and she was just over the moon that he's going to work on her. I had some tears after I spoke to her. I think a mixture of relief and because she said some really nice things to me about not giving up and listening to that little voice that kept telling me things weren't right with her.
Po went down and had a good old roll when he left Fingers crossed this time next week I get the news from the kinesiologist that the Osteopath's work is working. Phew!

Oh Fee, that really does sound positive, I just hope that the osteopath can help her and give your poor girl some relief - great that he could find the 'numb bum' - fingers crossed that you can really get this sorted now |

Great news. Po sounds, and looks, a real treasure, love the photo of her drying her face and lying down. The video of her nearly falling over was upsetting, so goodness knows how you felt, well done, onwards and upwards. |

Osteopath came on Monday and wow did Po respond! I literally had to hold her head up under her chin and tried to keep her awake
Kinesiologist retested her and phoned tonight to let me know that he's working so I've to keep going with him AND he's happy to continue sessions every fortnight.
Please please please this works and my girl can get some relief from pain and rest.
She actually lay down today! She walked past me into the stables and just lay down! Not for long though because the other two were in there and as they rarely see her lying down it was a 'big thing'. Polka was wickering to her and trying to talk to her to make sure she was ok and then Inka was standing over her sniffing her, saying 'Whatcha doing down there granny'!

Excellent Fee! What exactly does the Cranial Osteopath do? Is it like an intense massage? |

No Jill not like a massage. He just did tiny fingertip movements and had his hands (palms) on her too. Very subtle and looks like he's doing nothing really! The kinesiologist warned me of this though as many ppl respond to this treatment after watching it with 'He didn't seem to do anything' But Po told me different! |

Firstly, apologies for yet ANOTHER update! I did promise myself I wouldn't update you every time the osteopath came, but, sorry, I just can't help it when I see and feel so much improvement with my girl.
Osteopath visit and session today and Po's reaction to this is quite unbelievable, she is really getting something from this and has made significant improvements in her movements.
Osteo says her spine is all lose and moving well now apart from the block/compression area, but at least everything is freed up up to that point now. He's hopeful he can open and fix this area but time will tell. We continue with the fortnightly sessions and the kinesiologist is retesting her next week, so I'll get a very clear picture of how she is and how we are to continue. She told me today that she is very optimistic that Po is going to return to full health and full endurance work again! I can't imagine that right now, but it's wonderful to think it's possible now after the very black cloud over us for so long.
It's also important she goes barefoot for now and later until she goes through all the skeletal and movement changes. I'm close to, hopeful and keeping fingers crossed that one of the best barefoot farriers in the country may take her on as she will need very rigorous hoof work to ensure the changes happening in her back are supported and aided in her hooves. With that addition Po will have an awesome team behind her! She's so worth it

Don't apologise Fee, I think it is fascinating, and am so pleased that Po is responding so well. After all that you have been through, with all the various medical possibilities, it is so interesting that old injuries appear to be the cause, and that you can do something about it. Just shows that sometimes you really do need to explore every avenue, and wouldn't it be amazing if she recovered enough to start endurance again. |
