Looks really nice and forward going on lunge. How lucky to have such good help with her. |

It is fascinating watching Nerys working & she explains everything as she goes & how horse is reacting to what shes doing etc....I'm leaning so much - shes a brill teacher & she can read a horse so well!
Today Maj had a day off & so she rode Ginger out with me on Rowan for company - managed to avoid the rain! Ginger so loves to work & Nerys is sorting the mounting probs I'd been having with her which mand me stop riding her......tomorrow she is threatening to give me a lesson on her........so I'm going to hide the cameras & ban OH from coming anywhere near the round pen Thats after shes worked with Maj.

She had a saddle on for the first time today - not at all bothered by it! Shes working well on the lunge/long-lines - paces established, change of direction etc.

Some more long-lining round our place - Nerys worked her for the first time today from behind - Maj soon got the hang of it - OH has taken a little video clip of her coming back up our lane....will try to put it up later. When she settles into work shes good - she does keep testing Nerys all the time though |

What used to work well for us when the time came for them to be sat on was to lead the breaker out off another horse. If you can do this on some quiet enclosed lanes with another horse bringing up the rear they get used to the idea of having someone above them without having to deal with the fact that someone is sitting on them...if that makes sense Also gets them used to the sigts with the confidence of another horse. |

Up date! Maj is doing really well - Nerys is now riding her round the round pen & she is responing really well & quickly to Nerys's commands - shes eager to learn & please! She looks awesome under saddle - shes so well developed & has wonderful self carriage - a real picture! Nerys is away for a couple of days - but back on Friday & she wants to ride her out with me on a ned for company - then also on Sat & Sunday........then Nerys is off back to OZ Maj will then go to a friend to do lots of hacking out. Then she will be turned away to "think" about it all
I have learnt so much watching Nerys at work - she really is a master when it come to breaking in!!! (she works on a BIG TB stud in OZ & does stud work & also all the breakers) I would still be floundering somewhere if I tried it as Maj hasn't been the easiest - shes always been asking questions that I wouldn't have had the answers for!!! Nerys - for all her experience has had to "ask" Maj lots & she also says shes learnt a lot from her as breaking a pure Arab doesn't come her way often & she admits that she has learnt so much doing Maj & she has enjoyed her so much!!!!
How luck am I.....& Maj of course - having had Nerys's help & great wealth of knowledge........!!!!
Another plus - she handled Rameed to cover Tessa & Polly & she has installed in him manners that he never had - like how to chat up a mare....he had been previous to us a wham-bam-thankyou-man stallion - prev to us I think he had been allowed just to dictate & do his thing!! Now he will chat up a mare!!! |

So glad to hear Maj is having such a wonderful education, and it's also so nice to see an "expert" at work but also learning from these intelligent beauties.
OH and I have just been "educating" a young stallion in the art of wooing his future mate, and after 5 attempts, this clever young man has got the idea - was blood, sweat and tears to teach him though, so fingers crossed for a couple of lovely foals to do him proud!!!
Looking forward to seeing Rameed's foals too, I bet you can't wait Judith??

Will try to get some photos of her under saddle on Friday - thats if it ever stops raining!
Would be lovely to have foals next year - last year Tessa was covered & scanned in foal twice - but returned. She wasn't all that settled here last year - but if far more this year - so keeping fingers crossed! |

This has been an interesting thread, Maj is lovely Here's my 2 year old wearing a saddle for the 1st time. I was delighted with her and she didn't have one of her usual Diva moments lol I also 'dragged' myself on board for a 'wee sit' without saddle and she was soo good we didn't actually move anywhere but hey ya gotta start somewhere
a between the ears just for Judith lol

Taken Monday - second time of being sat on....Nerys had been riding her off the lead rein round the round pen - going well at walk & trot - very responsive! Kev (her OH) just led her back up to the barn. |

Hi Judith - so glad things are going well :) Er... has anyone noticed how like Evie (Tricia Hirst's little endurance partbred mare) Maj looks in these shots? They aren't related but the likeness is uncanny! We must have similar baby-educating shots of Evie while she was being started but lord knows where...? I'll put 50p on it that you won't want to turn her away once you've been on board... new toy and all :) Sue & Laura |
