I witnessed at a recent show I attended, one of the so called professionals using their whip rather excessively and uncalled for while standing their horse up in the show ring. When I saw this displayed in front of me I was absolutely discusted that someone who is meant to be showing horses for a living would show these appauling attitudes and training methods off to the public. Not only is it cruelty to the animal but it is also off-putting to amateurs or people just getting into showing.
Not to be rude but i personally think these people need to grow up and start treating their animals with the respect they need. An animal is always going to work better for you if your in control but kind to it rather than in control by force and cruelty and scaring your horse. I just wish more people would realise this, stop being so selfish and care more about their horses than some petty rosettes.

I was at a show last weekend and this horse was refusing to jump the novice jumps and the rider was whipping it like mad, the horse was rearing napping and really wasnt happy and it was obvious they were not going to get this pony to jump. The worst thing was is that they took it in the intermediate jumping afterwards it did the exact same thing and they were having a battle with this pony in the middle of the arena. anyone with some sense would realise that if it didnt get round the novice it isnt going to jump round the intermediate! |

A schooling whip was designed to be the extension of an aid. So if used when riding, it should "back-up" the leg. If used in-hand the schooling whip should back up or be an extension of the arm/hand. The whip was never designed to "strike" a horse, it should only ever be used to "encourage". The problem is that man can't tell the difference between encouragement and cruelty!!! Sadly, horses can.

Must say I watched some novice bsj showjumping recently, at a very large, international, show, and had to walk away. I was so disgusted at the way some of the youngsters were whipping their horses because of errors they made themselves. The poor horses were trying their hearts out but just got stuck sometimes because of rider error, instead of being turned quietly they all got hard wacks on their bottoms, and I mean HARD and PLENTY of whipping.
What is the horse world coming to?? |

I've walked away from LOADS of classes for fear of dragging kids off ponies & returning the favour of 'A good pasting' or continually 'gobbing' their ponies. But whatt infyuriates me even more than spoilt brats out for prizes...are the AWFUL parents stood in the side lines yelling the instructions to 'Batter it' or 'give it a good boot' What they all seem to forget is that IT is actually a living creature with feeling & fears I was taught that if things go wrong it was generally the riders fault, & I'm talking from an early age...if you lost it with your pony YOU got the pasting & sent out in disgrace. Too many parents live their dreams through their kids & compete between themselves, theres too much one upmanship...its so sad |

Agree with you all, I dont watch BSJA at all now as the temptation to haul people off their horses is too much.
The really frightening thing is,if that is how they treat their horses in public.......what on earth goes on at home. An old farmer once said to me that horses were the most abused animals in the world sadly. When I see some people I tend to agree with him. The horses owned by the people on here are the very lucky ones.

At our yard, a horse (not arab) had shyed at flowers in a dressage arena, so got marked down, and the next day, someone got on him, took him in the field, and had 2 schooling whips
i defaintly thought it was way out of order!

I once watched an ex-friend of mine kick her lovely little highland pony in the ring at an agricultural show. No, she wasn't on it, her daughter was, and as the pony had been napping slightly, when they were brought into line, the mother marched into the ring and up to the pony and in full view of everyone, judge also, proceeded to boot it. Needless to say, I found out later that the pony had been sold on as it had become 'stale' in the show ring. I wonder why ...? |

Its so hard guys to stand tall and say something, someone did a thread recently by saying they saw some brutal behaviour at a show and she told them what she thought of them. I have done the same, even if it means going into the judge and discreetly saying something. Sadly us walking away wont stop it, but pointing it out to them will. People make me so sick, when will these idiots learn aggression will never get them respect!! Lx |

I think whips, spurs and all harsh gadgets should be outlawed I detest shows, because when I see (so called intelligent humans)!!! treating their sensitive, intelligent animals this way, I cannot believe that they are not banned! Is this allowed in the showring? and if so why? We live in the 21st century, but the way we treat our horses is something out of the dark ages
I also strongly feel that if people can`t ride/train their horses without using torture/brutality etc etc they should not be allowed to have horses in their lives.
We all know that horses will give so much to us if we just ask
I`m sorry to go on so much, but this always touches me |

mizzrockmonster---- there has been a lot on here about some of the in hand showing practices with our beloved Arabs, with special "dislike" of some of the professional trainers. It is horrifying, and I agree that we must all speak out whenever we see abuse. I also agree with others who have mentioned the show jumping world ---abuse seems to be endemic there from the children right up to the top.
