They will forgive you! Even my family forgave me for buying my first Arab after they met him! Then they did it again when his Mum came to live with me, and I'm sure they'll forgive (eventually!) when the next one arrives......
In the meantime, your AL family will be there
So - when have you arranged to see him then? |

Wise words Arabesque! How could they resist?
Have you seen him yet? Does he live up to his press?! |

Thank you for the wickedly naughty advice.....I shall be meeting him at approx 10am tomorrow. May not sleep! Will call AHS with his name and see if they have him registered but it sounds unlikely. Am hoping there is a total lack of sedative on viewing (as per my previous Arab purchase). You know I'm hoping he's horrid!! |

Thanks again ladies, he's lovely but, he's needs a lot of work to gain trust. It's sad as you can see that humans have really messed him up. If he hadn't had the bad start he would be my dream horse. Very sad. A rewarding project for someone though. |

That is sad Anna, but at least now you know, you will find your dream horse - probably when you least expect it, and I hope he finds the home he needs. |

Well my Mum's beloved Arab was literally unrideable when I bought him as a 4 year old due to a disaster when he was being backed (which I wasn't told about, was just told the backing process was incomplete), now he's everyone's favourite ride (mind you he is 21 this year), but it took a good professional two weeks to sort out his main problem and sympathetic riding for about 18 months before he totally relaxed. When he was 6 he went to my Mum's for the winter because I was working and wasn't happy about the livery he was in and she wouldn't give him back!! So I had to buy another one.
What are his issues? Can you cope? Did he steal your heart? |

OOh - please reconsider! Then he will have a lovely calm and sympathetic home and we won't have to worry about him any more! Ryazan (RIP) was dreadful for a long time because of trust issues - he didn't have any faith at all in humans and had just cause, after I found out his recent history... BUT he was my horse of a life time (many apologies, Aragon, and you are rapidly catching up!) and although he was "quirky" all the time I had him, he repaid my efforts a thousandfold. What behaviour/attitude does he present that puts you off? |

Oh you lot! Thank you for all the support, just a quick reply as I'm pooped. He is distant, a bit switched off around humans. I noticed as I left that they turned him out with some others and finally I saw the expression that I had wanted to see, ears *****ed, relaxed and happy. He was twitchy about being tacked up, having his legs (particularly back) touched and made it clear he did not like it one bit (she said he'd had mud fever.. I put his saddle on and he didn't like it but put up with it. When the guy mounted, he bounced around a lot before getting on, I winced. Horse was visibly distressed. Mounted from the ground and he shot forwards, sideways, whipped round. Once under saddle was excited but didn't put a foot wrong. They said that someone had forcibly restrained his head when backing him prior to them purchasing him. He was also manhandled by her former partner..... So, I can see clearly why he is the way he is, this is without knowledge of his life before last year (through dealers I gather). I don't want to imagine how the poor thing has felt and it's no surprise that he wasn't elated to see me. I didn't have one on one time as my baby woke up. I think he needs chucking out with a friendly companion, bringing in, fiddling with, lovely walks and fuss before anyone dreams of 'restarting' him Again. The owner has not ridden him but her boyfriends have, I asked whether it was an idea to try him with a female rider and she said they were too nervous at her yard.....breaks my heart as none of this is his doing. I rescued an Arab colt and saw first hand how very dangerous they can be when spoilt or mistreated, one half of me says run away, the other, help. I have a little boy to think of too. She says that he may go to a dealer. |

Thanks Linda for your offer. I have to move my tb Jasper to summer grazing at the beginning of the month. Ideally they would arrive together as there are no other horses (I have to borrow a companion if I don't get him). The owner also says she can't pay any more livery. I'd much rather wait for you to come! I just read the Aragon story. What a star she was to get him, a wonderful lady and lucky boy. It makes this one seem relatively straightforward, well the logistics anyway. I have always had 'rescue' animals but having cut down to one horse now wonder if i need my 'bumps felt'!

Hi Anna,
I understand your reservations completely especially with a young baby to think of........however I always say go with your instincts and if your instincts say he would settle with tlc and time out relaxing with your tb then maybe he is not too badly damaged. I would bet my last pound that he as a sore back which would explain the reaction to being mounted from the ground and I'm sure the saddle won't be the best fit but he still didn't do anything horrible when ridden.
When I rescued Mouse, my ex racehorse he was dangerous and I'm sure I was bonkers to take him on but until he died a few months ago he had a wonderful life and I loved him to bits. He taught my young Arab who is now 5 how to e a lovely well adjusted horse and looked after him since he was a foal.
All I'm saying is that things have a funny way of working out but trust your instincts and if they say he could be your dream horse with a bit of time and patience then I would say go for it.
I'm in Scotland so I can't come with you if I was closer I would come. If he had done this I would say no

Anna, please don't feel pressured, by us or the lady selling the horse, I'm sure she is in financial trouble, and livery is no doubt expensive in North London, but hopefully she can cope for a couple of weeks.
I agree with Gail, as soon as you described his reaction to the chap getting on him I thought sore back/badly fitting saddle. Sounds like he needs to be turned away and loved for a while.
Would she let you have him on a month's trial? Just a thought. |

Sab2 thank you. I have just spoken to my mum and she may come and see him with me to see how she feels about him. I need a companion for jasper whatever happens. Linda. She said that she has had someone to check his back and they said that all was fine. No harm in second opinion though. He looked to me as though someone has scared him senseless when mounting. She won't do a trial as she doesnt want him back! |

Whereabouts in Herts? I don't mind coming with you if it's not too far from me. I'm in Chorleywood. However I do agree that if you don't have buckets of time it might be best to walk away? |

Anna, as I am sure you know, mounting problems can be overcome with patience and sensitivity, and your description of how he is being handled at the moment sounds as though the poor lad isn't getting that. He is still young and sounds as though he would benefit from being turned out to relax and settle and quietly started again later in the year. His back may be fine, he could well be objecting to being bounced around on (what horse wouldn't?).
If you do go ahead, make sure you don't pay any more than you absolutely have to for him - he doesn't have papers and he is not straight forward (yet ). |
