Interested to hear about Arab X's especially unusual crosses.... I have a home bred 5 yr old Quarab filly...sire Rameed my old Crabbet stallion out of my QH mare... Ruby looks like a QH, moves & thinks like one... lol not sure where her Arab half is hidden Two friends of mine bred Arab Xs... one was out of a Dales mare... the resulting filly looked like a big cob body wise but with finer legs... & sadly had a very unstable temperament :( The other one was out of a Fell mare & just looked like a well built Arab. Wolf is an arab x saddlebred x welsh D and as far as I know he's fairly unique. His sire has been used on a few Bs to create nice riding pony types but as far as I know he's the only D cross.
Someone I know has a couple of 'secret weapons' for endurance growing in her babypony field - very nice arabs crossed with very nice trotters. |

I once knew an arab x shetland. The shetland was the stallion and we think it must have been an accident. But the resulting pony was actually a very nice chap - about 13 hands, very useful 'second pony' stamp, nicely put together, and did all pony club activities. |

I've got a 50% arab, 50% highland mare. I'll try and get some pics on here later. Some days I can really see the arab in here and others I think she looks much more like a highland! She's about 14.1hh ish and I have always thought of her as being a more highland, plod on all day, type.... until my daughter took her for a gallop on the beach with her friend's 16hh tb ex racehorse..... she FLEW and kept up with the racehorse , so I think that must be where the arab bit is hiding in her!!! |

If you cross an arab with a shire like mentioned it is really a type of warmblood, i would think it would turn out quite nice and make a good all rounder. |

I used to breed Arab x Pershron (not sure on spelling) x Appaloosa, Very nice show /good all-rounders, The dam was all pink and spotty, with pink eye's and just a bit scary to look at, but her foals where something else. |

My Larissa is by an arab (Sheruggi) out of my Astarte - who was approx 3/4 Saddlebred and 1/4 Thoroughbred - as her mum Ishtar was by Snow Warning - out of Highlees Bo-Peep - who was mainly Saddlebred.

Very interesting Carole
Yes want to see your Arab x Hackney cross Pendragon One of the DIY horses that live with me is Hackney x coloured cob... sadly not a very nice horse, difficult temperament...have been told by a friend who used to work with Hackneys that they can be very difficult temperamant wise...

I can remember years ago seeing a fabulous chestnut cob all trimmed out with hogged mane, stunning horse. Turned out to be Shire X Arab although you would have never guessed without asking.
I bet the Highland X Arab is lovely, my hacking pal has a Highland and he's grand will have a go at almost anything so gives AriArab confidence but he hates boggy ground and Ari leads him through.
On the rare occasion the Highland says no he really means it but Arabs will always do with gentle persuasion once they understand its ok.
We often think a mix of the two would be fabulous

Ok will put some baby pics up later, I need to get more up to date ones he is 9 months old now, he will be grey, mother was a black hackney and dad was my old stallion Montroze Monitor/Platignum Flame, the colt (will be gelding) is quite bold and friendly, his dad temp was second to none and his mum was a nice mare had been roughly handled before my friend had her, I hope he will make a riding horse but am sure he will make a carriage horse, I am intending to keep him xx |

Many years ago an Arab mare came into my hands during the days of being young and fit (lol) from a sales. As usual I fattened her up, broke her in and found her a new 'forever' home. Anyways almost exactly 11 months to the day that I got her from the sales I received a VERY irate phone call that this mare had foaled and 'How dare I' cover her then sell her on without saying anything!! Of course I had done nothing of the sort and the likelyhood of one of my boys getting out of their stables, doing the deed and then returning and conveniently locking their doors behind them was extremely rare if nigh on impossible!! I was threatened with courts etc etc etc so I sent my vet out to inspect mare and foal. She called me whilst on the visit almost in hysterical laughter as when she arrived to see said foal, it was a MULE!!! Needless to say they did not take me to court. (To the best of my knowledge I do not and never have owned a Donkey stallion!!) |

Great story Pashon!
Mikhan of Pulpits (Mikeno x Dragonfly) had some very useful foals to both Dartmoor and also to Connemara mares in the 70s & 80s - most used to do well locally.

my first pony was a shetland and when my mum bought her they asked if she would like her covered before delivering her. so she arrived in foal to a very good Arab called blue magic. magic angel as she was named, her shetland mum being called Angela, was skewbald. we bred several foals from her. she went to pure bred Arabs and produced skewbald 3/4 Arabs. at this time coloured Arabs were not the "in" thing and when she produced a skewbald by a biddesden stalion the stud groom told mum to keep it quite! she also produced a palomino. she was very fast, only about 12 hands had an Arab body but sadly only shetland type legs! |

OK now heres a little tale.... When living at a prev, prev farm... our neighbour had lots of very rough & scruffy sort of coloured ponies living out on the open hill next to us.... one particular horrible, coloured stallion, parrot mouthed, BAD conformation, etc, etc.... was a real pain in the ass when riding out.... Oh he passed all his "traits" onto his offspring... inc the parrot mouth... Anyway.. my main riding horse at that time was a 15hh bright chestnut mare by Midnight Gold (loved her to bits & still miss her so much), who was a real madam!!!! So.. one day my neighbour stopped me to talk.... & he offered me the services of the above ****ty coloured stallion for my mare... He said we could stand her in a big ditch so his 12 HH something stallion could climb aboard!!!! I swear Zahera understood ever word he said because the look on her face was a complete picture... LOL :D If a horse could say.. No Way... she certainly did that day Judith |
