I am trying to trace the breeding of my mare and have a list of all chestnut mares born in 1998. I started with 135 and, through a process of elimination (just call me Sherlock) am down to 106. If you have one of these, would you please let me know her name so I can carry on crossing off the names. Also, if you are a breeder, please contact me as I only have names for some breeders and no contact details. I can e-mail photographs if necessary.
Thanx Debbie

Arabus Charisma. 105 to go! It would seem a bit easier to see if anyone has any info on your mare specifically? Good luck anyway!

Thank you everybody! I am now down to 103! Pixie's last owner went off to Spain and had 'lost' her papers. In actual fact, she sold Pixie to The Jays in Bury St Edmunds and then I bought her 8 weeks later, as a 6 year old, but she was aged by my vet, who removed her wolf teeth in July, as just turned 5 in April or May of this year. This means she was born in 1998 and not 1996. My farrier agrees because he says her balance is like that of a youngster. She has also grown at least 2 inches. You can see photos of her on the Arabian Club web site.
Thanks again everyone, Arab people are very helpful! Debbie |

Out of the 135 chestnut mares listed on the datasource, a load of the names actually come up twice - if you hadn't noticed that then you could get some more off your list!
Also, I have about 16 names that i know are not your mare from just glancing at the list, you probably have most of them but if you mail me I will give you the ones I have.
Have you any more info at all? Can you tell us if she looks like any line/breeding/family? michelle.fitzgerald@jpmorgan.com Michelle IIsis Arabians |

Debbie, if you list the ones you have eliminated, we can perhaps between us eliminate some more, - have you been though Show catalogues? - if so which ones?
How long have you had her?
Blood typing isn't terribly good, it will only tell you who's daughter she isn't! not whos she is! DNA is much better, but the AHS dont usually issue new papers without the last registered owners signiture!
Also please be aware, that because arabs mature "a lot" later than other horses, many vets wrongly "age" them, I have had them argue with me, even at liverpool!, as to how old things were! (and when you have delivered them you usually know!) |

and I had an equine dentist argue with me till we were both blue in the face that my (chestnut) mare had the teeth of a 6 year old and was definitely 6. I know she was 5 as I bred her and watched her birth!!!! She is 6 now.

Trying to trace a horse whose papers have gone AWOL hasn't got any easier than it was over 25 years ago.
Unless we are breeding black shetland ponies without markings the main breed societies have records of the colour and markings of all registered horses. Back then a friend bought a bay mare with a distinctive blaze, very typey, no papers, argument by divorcing couple. No help from the AHS even to list names of bay mares born in a couple of years time band. Her name was Koi, so a similar name could have appeared, some of us use shortened stable names, so that possibility was also lost.
As many Arabs have abundant white and whorls identification cannot be so difficult a task for the AHS registration records to undertake. Even if an identification fee was involved, at least the time spent would be paid for. It would then be simple enough to match the unpapered animal to registered horses, leaving only a few with the fewest unique identifaction marks to be queried.
The last registered owner of any animal so identified coud be contacted etc...
Reluctant though I am to agree with the cost of parentage verification of foals, at least in the future this SHOULD not happen, and all registered horses will be identifyable.
I only hope that the cost of PV does not result in more 'middle value' foals being unregistered, we have all heard of the ugly duckling. When I bought my old Crabbet mare, one of her daughters had not been registered, pure Crabbet, lost to the breed, such a waste.

Phew, so that is the list I am left with. I know what you are saying about aging Arabs from their teeth but my vet is Graham Duncanson, who is a well respected tooth specialist type of man, he is always in magazines and on telly so I hope he has got it right. If he can't get it right then no-one can! So if anyone knows any of the above chestnut mares, please let me know.
Thanks again, you lovely people Debbie |

Oh dear, I have just seen that the list has been shuffled together, even though I was very careful to put each name in line! They are in alphabetical order if that helps! I have had my mare since May of last year. I have been looking through the show results on the Arab websites, also the entries for the Arab racing and the results from the AHS web site. The AHS told me that a blood test would not be much good without the dam and sire, maybe if I get my list down to a few, I can use a blood test to eliminate the rest? I am now compiling a list of the breeders who bred the last 103 and will post that to see if any of you know them.

If you bought the mare from the Jays can the owner not help you, she should have details of who she bought the horse from. The trouble with dealers is they are often not bothered about the horses, where they came from and where they go. Do you have a photo to post here as someone may recognise her?

Hi,
My Friends - the Stimpsons, bred PA Selenah & PA Salomi, - your mare is definately not Salomi - who has very distinctive markings, and is still owned by them. I will check with them about Selenah - but i am fairly sure it isn't her either!

Thanks again folks There are pictures of Pixie in the photo album section under Dibdob's horses, there is also one attached to the first message above. Unfortunately, The Jays were very unhelpful, I phoned, e-mailed then phoned again before they would even reply to me and then they said that they have no records of Pixie's last owner and can't remember her name. They say that all they had was a mobile phone number. It does make me wonder who it was that lied about her age, the last owner or them? I am now down to 101

Apart from these there are some Sheikhs listed, do I assume that they will be kept by the breeder or are they ever sold? Also, some of the above are Egyptian breeders and I don't think Pixie is Egyptian but I am not sure. I know there are some famous names up there but I don't know how to contact them. Anything you can do to help (again) would be greatly appreciated.
Debbie (Dibdob) & Pixie (I wont tell you what I call her sometimes)

You can eliminate Yemama Rose as she is still owned by her breeder Sue Capewell. Dorothy Brandie is based in Aberdeen and has a web site, so although she had chestnut mares for sale a year or so ago it is very unlikely that Templar Croft stock found its way to Norfolk, She had a lovley Ansata El Salaam colt for sale and was not getting any enquiries from England due to the distance. |

Thank you all again. Do you all think that the ones bred by Sheikhs would not be sold then? I have got a few on the list that I couldn't find in the racing entries but I presume that they would be kept for breeding? Does anyone know? Also, can anyone be positive that Eastworth Rosalind has died because it doesn't say so on the Datasource site? I will ring the AHS about the standard letter to the breeders which was suggested, great idea! I'm off to see if Pixie will stand still for a better photo.
