Thank you everyone for your splendid captions Anne’s especially made me laugh as it is so like a horse to want more! However, we are still missing the name of the horse and the lady as I’m afraid Barb’s suggestion is not the right answer. One clue - her name appears in Jude’s list of ridden champions!
Mike, I’m looking forward to some more of your “little (?) teasers” but could we just have a day or two more to recover? I’ve had to lie down in a darkened room today to recuperate from yesterdays efforts! (Not true really as it was the first day back at work after 2 weeks hols ). Back to the mystery horse in the photo with H Merz…as you say it was taken at the first Nations Cup at Ascot in 1980 but its not Estasha, it is in fact her daughter Bint Shaker! Om El Arab had El Masra, Bint Shaker and Estasha entered for the show. Estasha had stockings on the near fore and off hind and small socks on the off fore and near hind. Bint Shaker’s markings are as shown in the photo; both were grey though Bint Shaker’s tail was darker. Estasha was El Shaklan’s full sister (f 1973) and her daughter was by Shaker El Masri (f 1977) Going back to your information on Gharib, is there any chance you could post a photo of him for us to see?
Jane and Lynda, so pleased you are back with us again, we do miss you when you are away! Lynda thanks so much for discussing the future of this thread with Sean, it would be wonderful if it could be a separate quiz section on the forum – educational as well as fun!
Jude, I’ve got photographs of most of the horses on your list including some of the ‘oldies.’ Like Marilyn said, it will take a while to scan and upload them but I just happen to have one to hand of Mrs Massey with Rabalain (head only, haven’t scanned in the body shots). I was originally going to post this as part of a ‘personalities’ quiz although there is still the gentleman on the right to identify if anyone wants to have a go! (Yes, I know who he is)
The photo was taken at the Parade of Arab Stallions in 1976 and I know Marilyn will be able to tell us more about Christine Massey as she was also a photographer. Rabalain (Aulani x Coalani by Aulani) was foaled in 1961 and bred in the USA.
Best wishes
Caroline

Well barb, it's def not me - much too slim and elegant Is is Patrica Lindsay? I agree the gentleman is Pesi Gazder.
It would be great to see photos of all the previous winners of the trophy - you can't imagine the feeling I get just holding it and knowing all these people have held this trophy. Must try and keep it clean |

I think the "Famous" clue threw me a bit then Caroline. So Janet Gooding of Darenth Arabian Stud. she had Arakan(Burkan x Arwila). Tabuk ( Garbo x Fatima) and Grand Duke( Crystal King x Roxeena): all three very lovely boys. Regards Barb |

As suggested by Caroline, here are a few photos of Gharib (Anter X Souhair) born in 1965 at the EAO in Egypt and who arrived at Marbach in Germany in 1970.

Regarding the b&w photo of the horse and Heinz Merz at Ascot, I did think that it was Bint Shaker, I then made the mistake of checking her markings from her registration with the AHRA when she went to the US. These didn't match the photo! The registration should only a partial white sock on one side of the off fore which didn't agree with Caroline's picture. So instead I plumped for the colt Estashan (Malik X Estasha) even though the horse in the photo didn't look much like a yearling colt! I should have known better, AHRA markings information isn't terribly reliable at the best of times!

How wonderful that we now have our own quiz section! Thank you to everyone who has helped to make this happen most especially admin!
Barb
You’re right on the button with both answers – yes, it’s Dr P J Gazder in the photo with Christine Massey and Rabalain and yes, it’s Janet Gooding (with Arakan in this instance). You’ve thrown me with the “famous” comment though, did I use that anywhere? I know I called her “well known.” (More senior moments on my behalf?) Janet showed her horses extensively during the 1970s, early 80s and no matter what show I entered, she would be there, always with her trademark cap! Apart from the three stallions you listed I also really liked her mare Shemuka by Grand Duke out of her mare Shemali (by Kossak). Would be interested to hear if anyone has any news of her.
Mike
Thanks so much for posting the photos of Garib I thought he was black but could I find any photos of him? They’re in the books somewhere! Re: Estasha and Bint Shaker, I have near identical side view shots of both of them taken in 1980 so could post them if they are of interest (for comparison) also, a young El Masra. Now I think we are all more than ready for another of your mind bending little puzzles – pleeeeeeeeeeeeease
All the best
Caroline

Ok eyes down, books open & here we go!
Pictured below are three mares, how are they connected to each other? There is a UK connection...what is it? One is the dam of an an Aachen Champion, which one, and for "bonus points" name the horse that won at Aachen and the year. What is the connection between the name of the stud where mare c was bred and the mare. A couple of hints, two of the photos were taken in Europe, the third in the USA. To narrow your search down a bit all three mares are SE.

Caroline, I think that we would all like to see the pictures of Estasha and Bint Shaker

Many many thanks for photos of Gharib as I have his SE black daughter EH GHASIRA who has the most wonderful temperament and is a fabulous ride. I hadn't any photos of her dad. |

Mike and Lynda, thanks for your messages re Estasha and Bint Shaker, will post the body shots and some head shots at the weekend.
Mike, thanks for the photo of Al Abd and the latest quiz, will have to get the 'ol thinking cap' on now!
Jude, now that we have our own 'forum' area should we start a new thread based on your posting of 8th August re: the AHS Challenge Cup-Pure Bred Stallions so that we can post photographs seperately of the winners on it? What do you think?

Hi Anne,
Good guess but none of the mares are Shahbaa (Hamdan X Shahd) They are connected to a pretty famous horse who had an unusual home though.

Nice thought Pat, but none of the three have any Ansata, Morafic or indeed Babson blood, though the Aachen champion was by a Morafic son. All three are also descended from the very first mare pictured in this thread.
