Caroline, I agree wholeheartedly, so I'm just going to have to win the jackpot in the lottery!
One final clue before I come clean, though it hadn't entered my head when I posted the question!
I do happen to have a son of the horse(another full blood brother to Nijamin) pictured as a three year old.

Another try. Grey stallion is Nayef. All the mares were at Marbach. and the filly is RN Farida?! Hope I am getting closer Mike! Regards Barb |

Hi Barb,
Not Nayef either, but the filly(now mare) is RN Farida and the mares are Marbach's famous "silver band" Which included Nedjari (dam of Nijamin) and Noha (dam of RN Farida)as well as the dam of the grey stallion Which is in itself another clue.

When and if we finally get this right you will have to tell us the name of the horse in my last photo Mike!

Well done Barb!I knew you would get there!
The horse is indeed Nabya Ibn Gharib (Gharib X Nabya by Hadban Enzahi), who stood at Om El Arab in Germany until 2003 He was bred at Marbach, along with his full brother Nasir(the one who went to Babolna), Norus (Gharib X Noha) who went to the USA and Nijamin (Gharib X Nedjari) who was brought over to the UK by the Maxwell's. Nabya, Noha and Nedjari were of course full sisters being by Hadban Enzahi out of Nadja.
Gharib the sire was bred at the EAO and purchased by Marbach, though he wasn't the horse originally offered by the EAO, that was Sultan (Sameh X Lubna). Who was later exported to the US. I am tempted to think that in selecting Gharib, Marbach had one eye on their main concern of breeding warmbloods. Something that he was extremely successful at. As was the Norus son El Norus, who covered between 20 & 30 warmblood mares every year. Gharib was one of those horses that you either loved or hated but he is one of the few sources of a long shapely neck within SE bloodlines, he was also an extremely athletic horse, a quality that he also passed on consistently.
The world champion was of course Hadidi(Norus X Hebet Allah) pictured here at Aachen in 2001.(photo by Erwin Escher)
A horse that on his day is unmatchable in terms of his type, power and sheer physical presence Incidently, I believe that he got his size (and much maligned legs!) from his dam Hebet Allah.
I also think that Barb beat me to naming the horse in Caroline's photo

Thank goodness, I can now sleep tonight. Let me have a few days to recover Mike!!!! Thanks for your nice comments on Santanna and Spearmint. I saw Spearmint at Al Waha early in the year - he is such a wonderful horse and has produced some fantastic stock for Al Waha - go check out the filly this year!!!
Santanna is well and full of fire here at Auchmillan - he's happy at the moment "cos" Tom's away!!! |

Oh Barb, I'm so pleased you got the answer right! As Jude said we can all sleep tonight. Thanks Mike for telling us the story of this fascinating family.
As to the black and white photo, yes it's H. Merz but the horse is not 'Bint Estasha'! I posted this as I thought it expressed how many of us felt this afternoon whilst trying to solve this very clever puzzle.
Jude, I'd heard that Jane's Spearmint filly was something very special - is there any chance we could see some photos Jane?
As we’ve all been working sooooooooo hard recently, how about something silly? The photo below shows a very well known lady with one of her prize winning horses. The questions are: 1) Who is she? 2) Who is the horse? 3) What are they saying to each other? (write a suitable caption) Have fun!

For the caption:- "No you can't have an ice-cream until after the class is over!"
Caroline, obviously not Bint Estasha, since I assume the photo was taken at Ascot in 1980 and she wasn't at that point even a gleam in her daddy's eye! Nor is it her big sister Bint Shaker or Naharra both of whom were shown at Ascot in the International Show, since I think that the markings are wrong. So I will plump for Estashan (Malik X Estasha)

Been away for 3 days without my laptop and now we have 28 pages on this thread and so much more info and pics so apologies if this post is a bit late!
Spearmint Sire: Shammar by Champurrado (Irex x Niseyra) x Somra 11 (Fedaan x Safarjal) Dam: Sappho by Blenheim (Rheoboam x Beryl) x Selima (Bahram x Siwa 11).
We (Al Waha)had arranged to lease Spearmint before the death of Mr Oppe and it fell through as the Oppe's had hired their own trainer but he didn't stay long with them. Then after Mrs Oppe died, we heard on the grapevine that Spearmint was to be sent as a teaser to a thoroughbred stud, so a phone call was made to have him with us and down the line, he is now ours. He's now 23 years old (born 1982) but still fertile and covering mares.
Spearmint was a Junior British National Champion. He is very correct with the huge eyes of the Courthouse horses, a very balanced free mover, and he has a wonderfully calm temperament and a joy to have.
Incidentally, I hear that Courthouse blood is doing very well in endurance in France .
We have an outstanding filly foal this year by him out of a Tersk-bred mare, we feel probably the best he has ever sired in his life. No pics of her yet, sorry.

WOohh! this thread is going too fast for me to catch up, my PC has been on the blink Good news is the wonderful Sean of admin fame has kindly said we can have our own Quiz forum ( I think he is secretly worried the pages of this forum are getting too full with this thread) but I have been pestering him for some time now and finally he has caved in If that is Shirley Watts she has changed out of all recognition |

Jane has prompted me to post all the previous winners of the beautiful trophy we received at Malvern for BNC Ridden Stallion.
What history this trophy holds - can anyone post photos of the previous winners. We feel very honoured that Toman's name will be added for 2005

Just having a "break" from Malvern photos... we have photos of all the ridden champions from Dadia onwards and this sounds like a "winter evening job" to me!!!!! Manex holds a special place on this list - it was really thorough him that we got involved in Arabian horse photography - his photo of him winning as a yearling colt at Peterborough in 1976 was pubished in the AHS news - I couldn't believe that someone (ie the Houghtons - whose daughter-in-law Kathy - judged the open ridden at Malvern this year...) from the same town as us had bred an AHS winner and I arranged to go and see him...that was the start of a long friendship and a long involvement with the AHS show... |
