So sorry Bob but wanted to post the above before Mike/barb/Anfi beat me to it this time.

It was WONDERFUL to meet you at Malvern. So pleased Ena doesn't mind sharing you with the rest of us.

I had to hide my face in Bob's shoulder while they made the final decision on Ridden Stallions - what a HUGE HUG I got after the decision was made.

See you soon Bob and Ena

LOTS OF LOVE

Bend Or, from Musgrave-Clarke. By Rheoboam x Beryl. Mrs Oppe bred Masque to him in 1981, she had a bay filly in 82, Benmasque.

Lovely photo of raqisa Jude, in fact all of your photos are lovely. Volante was at Mrs Oppes too when I was there. is that Nina Campbell showing her? Did she own Sorbus? I used to love her stallion Mehriz, does she still have horses? Sorry for all of the questions.

Well done Jude you just pipped Caroline at the post! The bay horse is St Simon pictured in Brasil And Caroline mentioned the Courthouse Stud where he was born and also Persimmon (St Simon X Kazra) bred and owned by the Maxwell's.

Lovely mare Jude! Incidently the 2nd last foal (a pretty chestnut colt) that the Gojec granddaughter of ours that I mentioned earlier was by Sorbus!

Sadly I haven't seen or heard of Nina for some time. She bred some lovely Arabs including BNCh Mehzeer who I remember having him pose in front of Nina's much prized pampas grass on her front lawn and then proceeded to take a chunk out to EAT!!!

YES that is Nina in Raqisa's photo.
Caroline: cameras - we are digital now. The cameras we now have can change ISO whenever you want so when it was really dark I was working on 1600 which tells you just HOW dark it was at Malvern initially (equivalent of Towerlands indoors at it's worst!!)

Wow - Sorbus brings back memory's (some good - some bad!), i was lucky enough to look after Sorbus for a few years, (he was owned by my then boyfiend) - from about 1989 to 1993. (a time i very rarely talk about! - for various reasons!)

What a fantastic temperament this little horse had! - i had very rarely been near a stallion before, let alone looked after one (& i was only 19 at the time). His temperament was second to none, despite having been used mostly as a teaser, he was so sweet, was backed in one afternoon at 14 years old, and was a really super ride, - felt about 16hh even thou he was barely 14hh. My biggest regret is i have no photos of "dusty" as we knew him.

There is a super gelding by him, that lives locally to me, (unfortunatly unregistered), out of a nice mehzeer mare, that reminds me of him every time i see him at "local" shows.

This super little horse that was "under-used" he only sired 11 registered purebred foals. But probably contributed to an Awful lot of peoples "arab-i-tus" who met him being shown locally, - always impecably behaved, and with confirmation that (none-arab) judges always commented on as being exceptional.

As Marilyn has mentioned it is Nina Campbell in the photo - as Raqisa is not very big, Nina very kindly offered to show her for me. What a great job she did, was pulled in first but was put down to 2nd

Last time I saw Nina was a few years ago at Towerlands, I know she still had Mehzeer at that time. Mehriz died.

Agree with Jayne, Sorbus was a fantastic stallion and sadly under-used. I will try and dig out a photo of him. Raqisa has been a super broodmare for us, producing mainly fillies - only one colt. We still have daughters by Magic Ivory, Rodan el Ajzaa, Santanna and of course Diamond Star.

Jude, many thanks for the link, lovely photos!

Marilyn, thanks for your quick reply Thought you might be using digital, its the 'way to go' now isn't it!

Mehzeer, he was a striking fellow wasn't he - dark liver chestnut with flaxen mane and tail and four stockings.

Recognised Herr Mertz in the background - you're just toooo quick Pat

Marilyn - I know you took photos of Raqisa at Ascot but "I think" this one was taken by my better half Chris. Will check the original and if it's you I owe you

CJ - we also used Mehzeer and had a "flashy" ch colt with white socks, will try and find photos and post on site. Nina produced him just so well - she was only small, Mehzeer was quite tall and she just showed him so well. We could learn a lot from the "old days"

Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking, may I first say, the only SUPER STARS are those who share my undiminished passion for the Arabian Horse, It may come as some surprise that there are more than you think, some well known names, some not so well known, some just normal, none vocal, lovers of the Arabian Horse. To all of you I say, WE will never walk ALONE.

In normal secumstances it would be inaprorarte of me to single anyone out, but it would please me greatly if YOU would allow me just TWO,

To Peter and Marilyn Sweet, I say a BIG THANK YOU for your total support of our Arabian cause, over more years than I care to remember THANK ‘U’

To Elain Mann, “THALL DO FOR ME.”

That’s a Yorkshire Knight Hood for those who don’t know me.

I remember Nina Campbell, she did so much for the Haddock show, Nina if you are out there, please come and join us, LOL

To all my friends in AL may I say, Ena as left me, for a GOLF CLUB.

What gets me is I pay for it, But then it’s a small price to pay for UTOPIA.

To Caroline, Mike, Annee, Jane, Pat, Jude and all of you lovely people may I say sorry for posting a new thread when two were in full swing, A BIG senior moment on my part.

SORRY.

NOW

Annee as much as I love you.

You just jumped in and told me a load of ------

The rider is indeed President Ronald Reagan

quote:
Hi Bob - welcome back - we missed you

The horse is El Alamein and the rider is Ronald Reagan. It should be by Celebes and out of Elipsa. It was a gift from the Mexican President around 1981 and the horse was the subject of a painting that was given to pres. Reagan by the Federal Republic of Germany.
(source http://www.wiwfarm.com/reagan.html)

How dose a horse with European breeding end up in Mexico?.

I did say it looks easy but it’s NOT.

I still LOVE “U” but get your skates on, you ALL have a lot to do before this one is over

Regards

Bob

Bob, I did wonder about that - but what could I do - it was there in front of me and stranger things have happened...

Hmm.. that must mean that whoever wrote that article was wrong about the identity of the horse OR that I just haven't been able to find the right pedigree. That's what happens once in a while when you rely on the internet for information.

Is the name right? Or would you be breaking the rules answering that?

Oh well, back to the drawing board. Will have to dig deeper

You will not find the answer in ALL BREEDS.

I still love "U" ANNEE

The former president only ever owned one arabian, a gelding namely Gwalionko (Gwalior X Magic Charm) foaled in 1969 and bred by Walter & Mary Lou Beckman. So he (Gwalionko) must be the one, unless of course RR is riding someone else's horse!

Another quickie! Who is this stallion?

It is true that the president owned Gwalionko but apparently he got him not from Mexico but from Tom Chauncey. So - El Alamein must be unregistered in the AHR and the mystery remains.

GWALIONKO AHR*53676 22 Jan 1969 Grey Gelding ( 9 Nov 1972 )

Out Of: MAGIC CHARM AHR*32055 by BLACK MAGIC AHR*14604
Sired By: *GWALIOR AHR*36089
Current Owner: RONALD REAGAN

Mr. Reagan acquired GWALIONKO from Tom Chauncey, who was well-known in the Arabian world. The Datasource shows that Mr. Reagan became the owner on 5 Jan 1975 - from what I know about Mr. Chauncey, I'd bet that he was a gift to Mr. Reagan.

Bob - I love you too even if you have sent me off on a wild goose chase or should I say arab chase

Hi Anne,

RR did indeed acquire Gwalionko from Tom Chauncey in 1975. Though the Beckmans bred one foal by him before selling him to Tom Chauncey. "El Alamein" died in 1992 and was also the subject of a painting "Tribute" by Kim McElroy which depicts the horse against the Stars & Stripes and which she presented to RR in 1995. El Alamein was never registered in the US and there seems to be some confusion as to whether or not he was a purebred, certainly Mexico doesn't have its own internationally recognised purebred registery so registering a purebred from there could well be problematic!

Mike and Anne,

I found these pictures of President Reagan and his white stallion El Alamein. This is the horse that was a gift from the Mexican President. I remember a discussion about this stallion around the time of President Reagan's death. I don't think the name was spelled right and there was some trouble finding him? Strange enough, the datasource doesn't pull up a particular horse named El Alamein. If you search under Ronald Reagan's name, the only horse listed was his gelding Gwalionko.

There are several El Alamein horses but they have an additional part to their name. He wasn't registered as El Alamein with the AHA. It is hard to say what registry he may have been from...but the El Alamein in the registry was chestnut stallion born in 1943. I checked all the other El Alamein's as well and he is not in there. It is possible that he was not registered, Mexico uses the AHR

It is possible he was not purebred.

It is possible that he had "another" registered name. It will probably remain a mystery to us all.

Now according to the Reagan Library regarding the question of El Alamein's ancestry. While they do not have any specifics re his pedigree, it is their understanding that he was half Arab / half Thoroughbred, thus explaining why he is nowhere to be found in DataSource.

Regards

Bob

Oh Mike you are so right, this thread is such fun!And it is the contributions from those who have connections to the horses and studs that have been the subjects in this thread which is making it complete. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to do this and please keep those stories coming, we’re all enjoying every minute of it.

Bob, you are not the only one to suffer from ‘senior moments,’ I’ve had quite a few since this thread began the best one being that I thought at first glance that the horse in Anne’s headshot had a blaze, then I slowly twigged that it was a tassel instead – now that is sad!

But we are all in agreement with you in voting Peter and Marilyn ‘top of the pops,’ no show would be complete without them!! I keep hoping that they will publish a book of photographs someday as they have taken so many wonderful pictures over the years and it would be lovely to have them in hardback form to keep. Any chance of it happening Marilyn?

Can’t add anything to the debate over the Reagan horse I’m afraid but its interesting to look at the pedigree of Gawlionko as he carries lines to two horses already discussed in this thread – Naborr (sire of Gwalior) and Witez II (sire of Black Magic). No doubt the acquisition of the horse by Reagan would have been covered in the Jan or Feb issues of Arabian Horse World, does anyone have these? (I'm missing them from my collection)

Mike, thanks for bringing up Courthouse Stud. I was never lucky enough to visit the stud but a friend of mine did in the late 60s and she said the horses were lovely. And Jude, I see your mare is ‘double’ Courthouse as she has Champurrado in her pedigree too – wow! (Two other really special Courthouse horses to my mind were Siwah and Spearmint).

As to who the grey is in Mike’s photograph……ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Thanks for your "votes" - much appreciated as we're wading through the Malvern proofs and attempting to break the record for getting them out - some have gone. Having a short weekend break at Bychan Open Day (well it's not such a break as I will HAVE to take the camera with me - I'd be lost without it!) but back to finish Malvern hopefuly Monday...and should have some viewable on Arabian Lines events section SOON!
We would love to do a book BUT financing it would be a MAJOR problem. Just had an email informing the publication late 2005 of Gigi Grasso's latest...all those exotic locations in great light - not exactly comparable with the UK "summer"!!!!!
We are definately looking into doing a calendar for 2007 - made enquiries for 2006 but lack of time squashed that idea...
