Hey Caroline and Bob - glad you were glued to Live8 as well, while the WHO and Pink Floyd were on - did you see the audience bobbing and dipping? Well I looked sideways and guess what hubbie was doing the same I'm also not far away from the zimmer - esp first thing in the morning Barb - I've told him HE WILL ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE Grannie Jane and Mummy Jude say so (she'll kill me for that )
With regards to the mare - I can't comment These kind of markings do not worry me at all - just look at her QUALITY need we say more |

Yes Cate, it's Tamira - well done. The photo was taken at Malvern in the collecting ring when she was 3 years old by the Sweets'. She won her class and was also Futurity Filly Champion.
When Topaz foaled, I was as usual abroad; I had a call from Kathy and Barb at the stud and when they described the white, I thought they were teasing me and just didn't believe them!!! Andoy was a bay but though the mare family has always been good at producing white, I never expected to have such flamboyance; I saw Andoy foals later and many had white belly markings so it was a double whammie from both dam and sire line.
Tamira's white belly markings have always caused a lot of comment and discussion and I have won several bets with people making derogatory remarks - I took bets on whether she would beat their horse despite the markings. Some people hate them, some love them and I myself would rather not have them!! But what do you do, throw the baby out with the water because of them so to speak, as Tamira has such incredible style and quality?

Tamira's markings are a typical expression of the sabino pinto pattern. Sabino pinto is endemic in the Arabian - before the imports of the 1980s I would estimate that over 80% of Arabians in this country were sabino - and the pattern very probably originated in the breed, since there is an extensive Bedouin terminology for the various markings. It is almost certainly very ancient. Sabino at is most minimal form is represented by a white (or pink) spot on the under lip - at its most extensive, the horse can be completely white (though normally with brown eyes). Roaning throughout the body and large markings with roaned edges are also typical of sabino.
It is important to remember that this pattern is NOT caused by the same pinto gene responsible for the typical "gypsy pony" pattern - that gene is tobiano pinto, and probably originated in Scandinavia. Tobiano does NOT occur in the Arab.
The Blunt stallion Mesaoud was a sabino - Lady Anne described his dam as 'particoloured' - and it is due to the amount of Mesaoud blood in the modern breed that the pattern is found so frequently.
So if anyone tries to say sabino is 'un-Arab', you should tell them that on the contrary, it is as typical an Arab characteristic as a high-carried tail or dished face!

Well I can't say what make the wellies are as the photo is currently 'unavailable'
Thanks for the insight into sabino markings Keren, I really must find that article you had published recently, I'm sure it was in the AHS News but which issue? Can you remind me please.
Bob - Pleased you're still 'rockin on' but you forgot U2 off the list and yes, wasn't Robbie fab, what a showman! Must admit it did seem odd seeing Nick Mason playing drums again, he's normally zoooming around with his cars these days (I think he has over 40).
Caroline
(As I'm getting on a bit does that make me a 'rock hen' rather than a 'rock chick'???)

Catherine, you are correct, well done, I will tell you that the wellies were not made by Hunters, but by -------wait for it-------DUNLOP WELLY BOBS
We still need the handler.
Keren, thank you for that explanation of Sabino Pinto, great. By the way it was of interest to me that you know Elaine Mann and her late husband, we come from the same nick of the woods and it's maybe 20 years since I last saw Elaine, we were both on the NGAHS committee together and if ever anyone deserved a Dame Hood for services to the Arabian cause, it must be Elaine
Caroline, I forgot to mention U2. That makes you a Rocking Rolling Dolly Bird
PS I had a senior moment and put some photo’s in the TRASH bin and that was one of them, it’s now reinstated sorry.
Regards
Bob

This is a three part easy one.
(1) Name the horse.
(2) Name the TWO Ladies.
(3) Name the Dog.

The name of the handler in my last one was P Haywood.

The two ladies are Patricia (riding) and Sonia Lindsay. The horse is Gerwazy. Don't know the dog, but it is a dalmation. The photo was taken at Stockings Farm. |

I live in the East Midlands - not many Arab people here, and as myself and my OH have northern connections, we tend to be friends with folk from the old Northern Group area.
I agree wholeheartedly with what you say about Elaine - I worked with her to organise the Marathon in 2003 and have also worked in various capacities at her shows and she deserves a lot more recognition for the massive efforts she cheerfully puts in to ensuring other people enjoy themselves!

Ahhhhh Bob, you said the SWEETEST THING!
Pat, thanks for the issue of AHS News, I thought I'd looked through them all but must have missed it.
Oh it is nice to see a pic of Gerwazy again ('who' has been raiding the 'Arab Horse in Europe' I wonder?) - I remember him in the ridden classes at Kempton Park and he was a very pretty horse.
Now Bob...you're latest little brain teezer is Latawica (Wielki Szlem x Larissa) f 1955 bred by Nowy Dwor State Stud and another of Patricia Lindsay's imports (my fav was Karramba - a gorgeous mare). Latawica was of course the dam of White Lightning who sired Carmarque - is that the link you are looking for?
Keep on rockin
Caroline
PS Dog obviously named SPOT PPS Guess who else is having a senior moment? Should have said White Lightning was by Burkan.....no hope for some folk.....

Karramba 1951(Witraz-KarmenII)

I was hoping we could tell our newer Arabian members how Patricia made the Polish Arabians available to the UK. that's why I put two of hers together

How do you know you haven't beaten me already? I'm not infallible you know and like Brad Pitt, have my achilles heel but I ain't gonna say what it is! We could certainly do with some of your sunshine though as its been pretty miserable over here recently
I've cobbled together some notes on Patricia Lindsay (anybody else wish their magazine and book collection was properly indexed?)Sorry its not bang up to date but it gives a brief outline of her early imports - thanks to Erika Schiele and GBE!
Patricia Lindsay purchased her first Arab, the stallion ‘Rushti’ in 1949, she used him as a hunter and event horse and he is well known as the sire of Kossak (ex Karramba) who stood at Horsey Island Stud for many years. By 1958 she had come to the conclusion that it would be a good thing to introduce some fresh blood into British Arab breeding and as she spoke fluent Polish, she set off for Poland. What started as a sightseeing tour turned into a buying spree. This was the first time since the days of Skowronek that English Arab blood had been refreshed from Poland. Of the four mares and a filly that she brought back she kept Karramba (Witraz x Karmen II), another mare and the filly. She visited Poland again in search of a stallion in 1959 and came home with Gerwazy. She later added the stallions Iridos and Burkan to her stud. Karramba was followed by Almaviva and Latawica (both by Wielki Szlem), Lafirynda (Miecznik x Lala) and Arwila (Amurath Sahib x Wilga) and her daughter Arabija by Czort.
Patricia Lindsay also helped other breeders to acquire horses from Poland including in the UK - Grojec (for Lady Ann Lytton) Celina (for H.V. Musgrave Clark) and in the USA – Ardahan (for H H Reese, Raymond Ashton and Charles Donner), Szarza (dam of Amerigo) and Sabaa (for Frisco Mari), Caliope (for John Rogers), Bika, Kochana (bred by Patricia), Carmencita and Mohacz (for Raymond Ashton) to name a few. She was also the first person to spot Banat’s potential and bred Lotny from him before he was returned to Poland later to be exported to the USA where he met an untimely death. Her stock has been exported all over the world and she is a much respected breeder and judge of the Arabian horse.
All the best
Caroline
