Any more quiz photos anyone though we haven't got the horse in Mike's yet!!
All i can add is that maybe the photo must have been taken before the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) became the Egytian Agricultural Association (EAO).

Mikes picture is of Michaan, a desert-bred Kuhaylan Ajuz stallion from Saudi Arabia, which was presented by Sheik Fawzan el-Sabek to the R.A.S. He is shown standing in front of the main office building of the stud. Michaan was an outstanding rachehorse. Photo on page 262 The Classic Arabian Horse by Judith Forbis |

Hi Jane,
Quite correct the photo was taken during the "RAS Days" The horse was leased to the RAS rather than being owned by them if that helps any.
In the meantime, this one was supplied and suggested by "GeorgiaUK", name the horse and more famous daughter. This one should be right up Bob's street!

Well done Cate!! The horse is Michaan also known as Mashaan According to Forbis, Mashaan was from the El Jibur tribe of the Shammar near Deyr as was his sire. Forbis adds that Mashaan(Michaan) was leased to the RAS after his racing career and was returned to the stud of Prince Faisal in Saudi Arabia.

I see you have started a separate thread for the ‘seminar’ so I don’t know whether to reply on this one or the new one – confusion! Probably the new one and we’ll keep this for photographs/questions etc??
Jane
Many thanks indeed for offering to hold a seminar at your stud! It sounds marvellous and I’d love to attend. Will e-mail you direct, as suggested, later in the week to see if there is anything I can do to help, ideas etc.
Best wishes

Am I the only one having problems with this photograph? I've squinted at it on two separate computers now (cos it is a little 'fuzzy' Mike)but no joy so far. Is it too early for a little clue?

No it isn't AK Atallah either! Though the grandson did have a connection with the Maxwell's.

MMMMM....... Caroline is rather smitten by a grandson, the grandson has a connection with the Maxwell's. Zebeda by El Sareei x Galila, grandson being El Shaklan. But ... El Sareei and Galila are both bays according to the database and Zebeda is a grey, mistake I think??? In the dam line, there is Uyaima and she is listed as a chestnut but Uyaima's famous daughter is Estopa.
Think I'm completely off track though!!!

Hi Jane,
Beautifully reasoned out! The horse is Uyaima, dam of Estopa, quite often one finds greys listed by their colour as foals in this case chestnut. It can be rather confusing at times, Galila was actually a grey (born bay and listed as such) whereas her daughter Zebeda is listed with her adult colour of grey. Only in a database can two bays produce grey offspring!!!

Just got in from the 'funny farm' to read the answer; just shows what a difference small mistakes in a database can make though as Mike pointed out this could be due to the foal colour being listed.
How about another little puzzle....this is another three-parter and the questions are:
Who is the horse? Who is the woman? What connection does the woman have with the car?

Best wishes

I think the horseis Ferseyn, with Elizabeth Parke Firestone, the car is aFord which used firestone tyres! Mrs Firestone was also a designer and model. best wishes Barb |

So pleased you’re back as this thread is just not the same without you! Glad the judge was lenient, time now to put the whole sorry tale behind you!
You are absolutely correct with the identification of the horse - Raseyn and the lady is indeed – Gladys Brown Edwards (or Gladys Brown as she was then) the photo was taken at the Kellogg Ranch where she worked as a secretary in either 1935 or 1936 (I’ve seen it credited to both years). Raseyn was a grey stallion bred by the Crabbet Park Stud in 1923. He was the *first son of Skowronek to be exported to the USA (ex Rayya) and had a tremendous influence on the breed and Ferseyn, who Barb mentioned, traces to him.
However, the car is not a Duesenberg or a Cord but a Dodge (c1934/5ish) and here I must make an apology….I knew GBE had sculpted a car mascot of Ralet and that she’d sold the rights to Dodge and I’d mistakenly assumed it was Dodge cars. However, after a bit of in-depth research at work yesterday (the joys of working in a transport museum library) I’d discovered it was Dodge Inc., a trophy company and not the car manufacturers that bought her model (see picture below). Dodge cars always had a charging ram mascot as can be seen on the car in the photo. So my last question is kind of invalid but was interested to see some of the suggestions especially yours Barb about Firestone.
The model of Ralet (Raseyn x Sherlet) shown below was a radiator mascot that Gladys made for her own car later seen by Mr Dodge of the Dodge Trophy Company. Ralet was featured as a liberty jumper at the Kellogg ‘Horse Shows,’ a copy of the programme for July 4 1934 lists him as the 13th act.

Time now for another one of your fiendish puzzles Bob!

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for the welcome, it's always nice to be wanted The ADSL was down for a few days.
I must say you set some good puzzles, and here is *Ralet*, do you think this was used a a modle for the radiator badge?

My next one is this, the horse may be easy but I want to know it's name and also I would like you all to give me your view's on Arabians with markings.
 Photo Sweet

That is great news Jude, tell him it is a necessery part of him being such a super horse with very smart parentage, and that he must be thinking of a beautiful russian mare at home when they are using that artificial you know what!! The photo is avery easy one for me Bob because i foaled her down! Best wishes Barb |

Thanks for posting the photo of Ralet. I wouldn't be surprised if GBE has used the same photo (or one similar) of him for her model.
As to your latest puzzle, will leave it to someone else to say 'who it is' but would add that I personally don't discriminate against Arabians with markings such as those shown. I feel it is all part of the breed and its history. (Hopefully Keren will be on line to pick this up as she has done a lot of research on coat patterns such as this). I also don't mind the 'white eye' that some seem to object to - Ghazal had them and was all the more striking for it I thought. Just my humble opinion.
Caroline
PS Do I get any brownie points for saying the photo is taken by the Sweets at Malvern? No? I thought not still its only just over 3 weeks away now and we will all be there once again - yipeeeeeeeeee

No offence taken! I'm a few years off claiming my zimmer frame yet although watching 'The Who' and 'Pink Floyd' at Live 8 yesterday (all 10 bottom numbing hours of it) made me feel that I was 'getting on a bit' as I remember them first time round....! Not to mention Sgt Pepper etc etc!!!!
All the best
