Well, the white stallion is Aswan (Nazeer x Yosreia). I've no idea about the other two photos, but a wild guess would be Alexander Ponomarev, former stud manager at Tersk.

Hi Bob
So THAT was the cause of all the fireworks over the weekend!
Just got in from doing battle with the garden to read your latest brain teazer. Photo 1 is Carl Raswan (or Schmidt as he was then) leading Raswan (Photo 3) at the loading bay at Three Bridges Railway Station prior to the horses (cos Nasik is in the original complete photo too) being loaded into railroad cars for the trip to the London dock. They then travelled to the USA to the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch at Pomona, California. Unfortunately Raswan met a very early death but Nasik went on to about 30 yrs of age.
As for the horse in Photo 2, not 100% sure about this though I think it might be Aswan? Maybe someone else can confirm? Will go and scratch about in the bookcase for inspiration!

Ummmmmmmmm....I've been giving this some thought. I'm pretty sure it is Aswan but I'm not sure about the link. It could be:
1) Carl Schmidt always maintained that Raswan was a gift to him from Lady Wentworth but he 'gave' the horse to W.K. Kellogg (now that's a whole new can of worms!) and Aswan (originally reg as Raafat) was a gift to the Russian government in 1963. (His name changed to Aswan, as he had been given as a token of thanks from Egypt to Russia for support in building the Aswan High Dam.)
2)It could a play on words you're after ie Aswan - Raswan?
3)Or is it that they both trace to Astraled in their pedigrees?
Don't know, it could be all of these or something totally different. Oh I'll plump for the fact they were both 'gift horses' and if I'm totally wrong I'll go and sit in the corner with a dunce hat on.
Caroline
Tho this has got me thinking about Registan now!?

So it was Carl Raswan, then - I made a photo search on google, but could only find pictures where he had a beard and wore bedouin clothing. There is the obvious etymological link (R-Aswan), but I'm guessing that's not what you're after Bob.

Back again (what a pain I am!) Sherbatov and Stroganov wrote The Book of the Arabian Horse with classifications of Arabian lines. Apparently, a generation later, "the Russians' information was corroborated in large part by Carl Raswan." Is that it? No? Didn't think so either as your looking for a link between Raswan and Aswan.

Bob sweetie, we love you too but were any of my 'answers'about the Aswan ~ Raswan link correct??? Do tell........
Oh, had better add that Raswan was foaled in 1921 (Skowronek x Rim by Astraled x Ridaa by Merzuk)bred by Lady W of course at Crabbet Park. Carl Schmidt maintained that Kellogg had the horse "hamstrung on purpose." The truth is that he (Schmidt) rode Raswan out for exercise, tied him up, whereupon he got loose and "headed towards a team of mules hitched to a mowing machine. The driver saw him coming, and threw the mower out of gear. But Raswan plunged right into the blade, cutting tendon in back foot." The accident happened on May 7 and by June 7th his hoof had come off with the poor horse finally being put down on June 12th (1926) What a sorry tale.

Caroline,
Being the gentleman, that I am, I could not go to my bed and leave you and the rest of the "A" team in agony, but before I tell all just remember the rules.
NO, IS IT NO,COULD IT BE NO,I THINK
The names on the three photo’s TOP to Bottom
(1) Carl Schmidt (2) Aswan (3) Raswan
First link The man and the horse had the same NAME RASWAN
Second link The man changed his name from Schmidt to Raswan The horse changed his name from Raafat to Aswan
Caroline you had it all in you brilliant summery but it never came out all-together, but your info was so good I am going to concede well done

What are the 5 Star team like? You blink, go to have a cup of tea and they've answered . And they are getting quicker too at answering even though the pics are a lot more difficult.
It's really interesting that if a pic with a background or people in it comes up, apart from the written clues, people are using the background to help analysis.
Fascinating thread.

Caroline
There are several versions of the story - one quoted by either Gladys Brown Edwards or Mary Jane Parkinson is that there was a dispute as to the actual ownership of Raswan - originally he was said to be part of the Kellogg purchase, but after arrival in the US Raswan/Schmidt claimed that Lady W had given Raswan to him personally. On the day the accident occurred that had apparently been a dispute about this and Schmidt rode Raswan off the Kellogg ranch.
After Raswan had to be put down, the injured leg was removed and kept as evidence in the court case between Kellogg and Schmidt. Years later the mummified leg was discovered by GBE in the back of a cupboard at Pomona.
Schmidt/Raswan does seem to have been something of a dodgy character and some of the material he propounded about Arabs is unreliable to say the least.
