Caroline, It was nice of you to put two of my buddies as your quiz, Carmargue being one of Yorkshires favourite sons, bred by Joyce and Glyne Greenwood and looked after and shown by my mate Buffalo Bill, it was a day to remember last year at Malvern when Alun Prothero, Carmargue's owner for so many years, gave Bill the painting of Carmargue that had been so desired by Bill for so long. I think I remember us having a drink or TWO that day.
OK back to WORK
Who is this THEN???????
No clues just yet

Bob
Glad you enjoyed the picture of Carmarque and Bill. I thought it was rather appropriate as we had been talking about Carmarque in connection with Abha Fadil, Lynda's lovely WSA Charismma and other great horses. Interesting that El Shaklan, who crossed so well with Carmarque, was featured on a previous page too!
As to your latest picture puzzle - oh I know who this is! But I think its time I went on a brief holiday again?
Best wishes
Caroline

He is of course Priboj (Piolun x Rissalma) 1944, sire of Topol and Pomeranets, Metropolia and Monopolia just to name a few. One of the most important sires in the Russian breeding programme. I would love to hear your opinion on him - what did he pass on, what were his forces? etc.
Anne
Next, who recognises this horse??

Well that didn't last long "did it" ?
Well done to all the "A" team.
Priboj is one of the five Piolun (x Rissalma) sons. He is easily his most worthy and influential son. A classic in Tersk breeding practices, Priboj represents the skillful combining of Polish and Crabbet breeding. He is out of Rissalma, the daughter of Shareer (Nureddin II x Selima) and out of Rissla (Berk x Risala) of the Rodania family. Priboj was one of the most heavily used breeding stallions at Tersk, siring 204 foals (1948-1958), and is of commensurate value to the Tersk breeding program. Priboj daughters were well utilized at Tersk and are known for their sound structure as well as beauty and ability which they passed on to succeeding generations of show horses and race horses. Neposeda (x Nomenklatura by Naseem) is probably Priboj's most famous daughter, producing 12 foals (1961-1975); all but two of her daughters were retained at Tersk. Four Priboj's sons were selected as breeding stallions at Tersk: Pomeranets (out of the famous Mammona), Sport ( x Solianka II), Topol (x Taktika), and Krepish (x Knopka)
Priboj, chest., 1956 Piolun Koheilan I Koheilan IV Koheilan II x 91 Jussuf 10-Gaza;-4 x Dziwanna Bakszysz x Kalina Ibrahim x Lezginka
Rissalma Shareer Nureddin II x
Selima Astraled x Selma II Rissla Berk x Risala Mesaoud x Ridaa

He was bred by the Hedleys' close friends the Streams in California and was the first Straight Babson to come over here - and he travelled by sea. His son IBN EL NAFIS (BNCh Bright Venus's only foal) was one of my favourites. At his only show in the UK he was BNCh. He then went to Paris but sadly on his return he was lost to colic. He was very different looking to the UK Arabians at the time as well as being an unusal brown colour (when many UK's were bright chestnut with lots of white). Notably sire also of Shahpoor. |

Marilyn, Just when I thought you had emigrated, out you pop and get it in one WELL DONE, This was the horse that changed the way we in the UK at the time, judged our horses, it would never be the same after The Shah. He was never used in the USA, that in it's self has to be one of the biggest waste of blood that I can remember, who knows what a dynasty he may have left if he had not been taken by colic and they had used him in the USA.
He was a supper horse and this photo does not do him justice

Oh Bob......and there was me all ready to post a picture of The Shah as a 'who is it' and you beat me to it! Might have known
But here's another pic of him all the same winning the BNC at Ascot. As Marilyn so rightly says 'those were the days'!
Yes I'm curious to know what you're going to do inside Buckingham Palace too...walk the corgis???
Here's another little puzzle - two different horses but they share a link. Who are they and what is the link?
Caroline
Apologises for the quality of these, they've seen better days (bit like me actually!) |

Here goes with my first guess. The link, I think, is Lady Anne Lytton, and the horses are Grojec and Manto. |

Well, that didn’t last long did it? The ‘A’ team are out in force today!
Yes, the connection is Lady Anne Lytton who bred Manto and owned Grojec for many years before he was exported to the USA.
Manto, liver chestnut stallion, foaled 1956 (Blue Domino x Mifaria by Oran) and the photo shows him with, as Marilyn correctly identified, Colin Pearson at the Parade of Arab Stallions at Crabbet Park in 1977.
Grojec, bright bay stallion, foaled 1960 (Comet x Gastronomia by Marabut) and bred by the Nowy Dwor State Stud, Poland. Photo taken at a Stallion Parade in 1976 and here's another from the same day. (I must add that these photos have faded badly despite my running them through Photoshop and Grojec was actually a very bright red bay in colour)
All the best
Caroline
(Thinks….must set a harder question next time…..)
Bob, we're still waiting to hear what you are going to do in Buckingham Palace! Washing dishes or polishing all the R-Rs?? (If the latter shall I bring FAB 1 round??)

Well if you want to know then I will tell you,
I was invited by You know who, to sample the new Port and Sherry consignment, just arrived from Portugal and Spain, I might add, that the room was full of prominent people from the world of wines and for the uninitiated among you, It is a long standing practice here in Britain to Salute each glass with the words
BOTTOMS UP
Witch I managed to do many times during the afternoon and this caused some.
I can tell you
OK EYES DOWN AND LOOK IN
Name this horse PLEASE????
