Not me....

but all the other horses at the farm where I keep Marygold (4 pure bred arabs and one anglo!) are veterans and all are still in work. They range from 18 to 22.

All regularly hacked out. The anglo still whizzs around a SJ corse at break-neck speed. They still do sponsored rides, including the jumps. And Mum is talking about taking her boy (one of the 22 year olds!) to do some low-level dressage this summer.

3 of them live out 24/7. The other two are in at night during the worst of the winter months, and out the rest of the time.

Is 19 years a veteran? - maybe young veteran?
If so, Rose Alba is off doing a pleasure ride on Sunday with Bertie Bagwash.
First time out in 6-7 years after a trailer phobia!!
She is hacked out about 5-6 days a week, & also loves jumping - see photos on thread of pictorial Arabs -in action.

my oldie is in the bad books. She is 22 and I decided to go for a gentle plod round the village last week. She had other ideas, and rodeo and tried to dump me in the bushes.
I would show her but she hates traveling.

My boy is 22 in May and up until last November when he had a bout of Laminitis and was diagnosed with Cushings, was competing in Dressage and Showing, having weekly lessons, attending RC clinics - he also enjoyed a weekly gallop (when the ground was good, and jumping logs out on a hack... He is rodeoing round the field at the moment so I don't think it'll be long until he's up to doing it again!

Hi best friend is a 29yr old Fell Pony who gets ridden everyday and went with him to the VHS Regionals last year

Depends what you call veteran? My 20 year old, Ash, hasn't been ridden in the winter but will be back out again at Easter getting fit - and probably shying me off! Next door has a 24 year old cob mare who is still ridden, although only once a week. I hope Ash will be ridden for a few years yet - it's only been lack of time that stopped me riding her in the winter.

Thankyou for starting this thread Mrs V......gives us a chance to reminisce with our `golden oldies`

The most memorable of all modern day Arabian Ambassadors has got to be the infamous CARABINEER.....

the following originally posted by Roseanne on 29.02.08

"On Monday, just a month short of his 34th birthday Carabineer left his field for the last time. He and Kim rode through the sunlit Cotswold lanes, whizzed up one of his favourite hills and met another girl on her horse. He jogged along while they chatted. They were within sight of his field when his hindquarters dropped, Kim hopped off and supported him while he went down. She cradled his head in her arms and stroked his face talking to him gently and he was gone. Thirty years of devoted love, enjoyable graft and infinite pleasure gone in an instant.
Goodbye to a true gentleman, beautiful athlete and Kim’s irreplaceable, treasured friend. Below is her tribute to him.

Tears of joy and laughter - tears of angst and pain
Tears of life and tears of death all cried into your mane.
With power and speed and spirit, yet gentle and calm,
Steadfast and willing in sunshine or storm.
Elegant and exuberant, you took me to the end.
Goodbye to my precious and beautiful friend "

RIP Carabineer

Carabineer was sired by Carbine who is also the sire of Musketeer out of Glass Slipper

Our own Homebred Golden Oldies, (Anglos) are both sired by Musketeer, so very closely related to the great Carabineer. Pics below

Karitzi now 26 years young and still going well. Have promised to take her back to the National when she is 30yrs old

Scelebrity photo when 22yrs young....now 24 yrs and we have decided to retire him from stud.....and leave the Young Man to carry on his and Karitzi`s good work

Would love to hear from any A/l`s who have relatives of Carabineer, who were also sired by Mrs Ratcliffe`s Musketeer.

My golden oldies are Goldsmith (Donax/White Gold) who is now in his 28th year,22 of which have been with me. He pretends to be deaf but can hear the others crunching carrots a mile off and charges around bucking and plungeing like he always has! The Lady Helena (Prince Seraph/The Lady Honourine) is now 24 and still my angel horse;the kindest, gentlest creature I have ever met. The wimpiest patient in all respects but was a trooper when she had her ovary removed 12 years ago,the star patient!! I also have Pasha's daughter who is now 17 and his granddaughter who's 12.
Oh and the Shetland who must be at least 32!

My OH`s horse suffered a slightly chipped bone, which was operated on and the Vet at the time told his then owner to turn him away for twelve months, saying his future soundness was "guarded" He was a six year old at the time.

I made a point of acquiring him, knowing his size 168cm would be ideal for my 6`3" tall hubby, and also as the horse was several generations Sunray Bred. Oscar is now 15 years and OH (who dare I say...is not a lightweight at 17+ stones) has owned him for almost seven years now, and regularly rides him up to 20-30 mile pleasure rides and is aiming for a 40 miler in Autumn. Oscar carries Tony as if he was a featherweight, always finishing a ride still full of going...........and.....so far never a day`s unsoundness!!

Tony makes Oscar look like a Pony.

Sorry...only a Youngie....but hopefully Oscar will still be going strong when he becomes a golden oldie....just posted to illustrate vets can sometimes be wrong in their assessment, thank goodness

What a great thread!

My golden oldie is Gedenski (Omarele x Rashandy). He will be 21 years old on 3rd April. He still competes endurance and achieved his 6400km life time distance award at the end of last season (that's 4000 miles to be old school). He's not been out yet this year but will be being brought back into work this week. The way he's been bucking and scooting round the field I can't wait! At his peak he was British National Endurance champion, won 100 mile races, raced in the desert (see photo below) and was reserve on the British team at the European Champs at Punchestown. He also used to be on the front of every bag of Saracen Horse Feeds endurance mix and in all their adverts. He's a very special horse and I'm lucky to have him

Otto, she's incredible!!

Here are my GOD's (Growing Old Disgracefulies)

Firstly Toad my TB gelding - some on here will back me up when I say the odds were against this old sod making double figures, much less entering his 26th year as "stud muffin" to 10 arab girlies!! OK, we know it's all going South now, but it's all still there (in his head!!)

Secondly, the Queen of the Farm - Rose Aboud.
Here she is in her 22nd year with her H Tobago colt at foot and glowing as always. She's just entered her 23rd year, is 9 mths pregnant with the repeat breeding and looks just as well - roll on June!

I would sell my soul before selling these golden oldies..

Thank you for your nice comments about my mare Her name is Sapphire and she was my first horse - my Grandmother bought her for me in 1988 when I was 10 years old (oops I've just given away my age there!). I'd be the first to admit I was a tad overhorsed back then but I knew I'd never be able to part with her. I have learnt so much with this little horse and I owe a lot to her - so she is totally spoilt rotten now

H is 23 this year He's a little bit stiffer round the edges these days but he's still well up for it. He still thinks he's 50 miles fit.

There are more photos of him on the performance thread as I think he's more at home there than the old gits thread, but this is him last year at the Northern Champs:

(Photo thanks to West End Photography)

He's my boy (Procyon x Blue Quatrain (Sha'ir))

Another "feel good thread" Just what everyone needs, my oldie is now 20yrs old, I've owned her since March 2000 and she is quite the sweetest, lovely lady but definately the "queen" of the barn, all the others have to pay respect Her name is Ormmal and has produced for me some lovely foals including two Futurity Champions - I simply adore her and will never, ever part with her. I'll see if "my official photographer" will post a couple of pics of her on my behalf, she's not a ridden horse but nevertheless is priceless to me !! She is the second photo on my sig pic. Otto - your 31yr old looks truly amazing
The oldest horse I've ever had was Mollie, she was my TB/Connemara jumping horse but very sadly I had to her her PTS at 30yrs & I still miss her

Well, ok then - a few snaps of our 'Senior' Stallions (senior citizens)

Shah Shadow - 25 in April - had a busy life and covered a lot of ladies
(newly clipped for first time ever! he stood like a rock)

Vlacq Khazad - 19 and the softest creature you could wish to meet

Princeton Mariner - 23 and cheeky as ever

My own 2 riding geldings are 17 and 21 this time and both still have a spring in their step.... mum declines to ride them unless I've worked them in . Both will come out again this year... to show me up no doubt

Vlacq Lorindol (Shah's first purebred daughter) is 22 and as beautiful as ever... and still top of the heap in the gang of 15 wintering out

Our oldies owe us nothing - and we owe them so much... Chloe who passed last summer having given us 17 foals in return for a safe home where she could be understood, Amirat and Val our 2 tough grey cookies RIP...

To see the 'disposable' horses cropping up in the free ads really alarms me...

Thanks for all your oldies - keep em coming people

Thanks Laura for the piccies, they all look so well

I agree with you about the 'disposable horses', it's shocking that these oldies have to 'find' new homes its very concerning.

Love S.S clip
