I have a few who will never leave me. My 4yr old mare who has trust issues, could I ever rehome her without potentially endangering someone, hence endangering her safety - no. If it came to having to part with her she'd be PTS no question. My stallion, at 23 he has had a horrible time previously, having reportedly gone through 6 dealer yards in 4 weeks, prior to ending up at a sale where we rescued him - no way, he'd go at home, with dignity. My gelding, only 15 but blind in one eye and quirky as hell - he'd never leave here, his only way off my yard now is when he's buried.
Others I would rehome, or give away, but perhaps it's cold, but having seen how horses can end up when sold on, and on, there's far too few people who will PTS over pass on. I don't mean youngsters, or healthy an fit horses who CAN do a job, they hve every chance to go out and make their way, and that's what they'd do if I had to get rid of all mine, they'd take their chances as they have a good chance. The rest not so much, I'd rather see them PTS at home, knowing nothing and risk missing a good home but know they'll never be hurt or mistreated, than risk letting them leave me, quirks and all, only to find that said good home is actually now 3 homes further on...and poor horse end up in a state
