It was a really cold night here last night and pouring with rain. My old girl is at the moment in a very windy field here in the Lincolnshire fens and although there is a shelter at the bottom end, she never goes in it. I decided to put a high neck rug on her last night but when I was at the field I realised I had taken the wrong rug with me. I'd taken her heavy weight Weatherbeeta Taka rug by mistake. I thought I'd put it on her anyway as it was a really filthy night. This morning was even worse with the rain coming down in stair rods! She was warm and dry though. I had to go out for the day, so checked the horses at 8 0'clock. When I came back at 3 o'clock, some low life had stolen the rug off her back. It was obvious that she had been cold for some time and out in the pouring rain. She's 27 years old. Won't tell you what I'd like to do to them.

That is disgusting. We seem to be hearing more and more of this happening

I would rather give someone a rug for their horse, than have them steal one of my horses back...

I had this happen to me, the bast**ds must have know horses well as she did not like strangers, and the cross over leg straps were tied under her belly. There is no punishment fitting for the scum that does this. I had most of my other rugs marked with a huge painted postcode as a deterrent, but this one had not been done.

Disgusting, Hope shes warmed up a bit now, i know what i would like to do to them to, have you got a spare rug, im sure there are a few on here with spare rugs, we should perhaps have an emergency donation centre for rugs, Nikki had the same prob not so long ago with hers, dont think they were golden oldies though.

I too feel for you, these people are scum who steal rugs of horses backs. What about trying small padlocks to the rugs, my Sian Rugs/Fal pros I think could take padlocks.

I couldn't agree more. Can't really describe how I feel. Just can't believe that anyone can do that to any horse, let alone an oldie. It had to be horse people as Emmie would not normally let anyone mess about with her. It was the most expensive rug I'd ever bought, so I suppose they knew a good deal when they saw it. I do have spare rugs. Thanks everyone. Not as warm, but adequate. I've been writing all over them. My name, postcode in silver and black permanent markers. Anything to put people off. I wondered whether to buy a can of silver spray paint or something? Anyone tried it? I honestly wonder if she would have survived if it had been taken last night. I'm going to contact the local papers in the morning so that everyone can be on the alert.

I am really suprised this happens. You can pick a rug up these dayz for 30 quid. And i wouldnt risk trying to take a rug of a strange horse in a field for that. The dirty rotten thieving b*stards. Not sure about the padlock idea. What would happen if you needed to get it of in a hurry. If they had got caught up somehow and your keys were back at the yard?

Get some spray paint (the stuff thats used for Craft projects) and cut your postcode out in huge letters from cereal packets.

Then you can get a waterproof sealer (spray on Yacht varnish is good, as it's flexible and waterproof) and cover it, or the Nikwax clear waterproof sealer is just as good.

I used to mark all my rugs with my post code, and, or, her freeze brand no. in GLOSS PAINT, never seemed to harm the rugs, and my old Rambo (about 15yrs old) still has the post code on it, abet alittle faded now, and its still water proof.

There really are some scumbags out there. Think I'll mark the rest of Brambles rugs before I put them on her. Brought her a new Premier Equestrian rug last year, don't really want that to get stolen. I know i've several spares, but that doesn't help if they are stolen and she gets soaked.

I had all my rugs stolen last February but got them back as they had my postcode in huge letters on them. I only lost a fleece and of course all the headcollars and leads.

Bad enough to steal a rug, worse to steal it off a horse's back, but absolutely despicable to steal it off an oldie in terrible weather. I hope the dear girl is none the worse for it.

i know exactly how you feel, i've had 10/11 rugs nicked over the years, one time in the thick of winter, a few years back, they nicked the rug off my old lady, which then started up her rainscald. Bought new rugs, then they nicked them too.

I just long for the day when i'll catch them. Postcoding them certainly does help.

Rosy sorry someone nicked your too!

god forbid what i would like to do to these low lifes!!! we are going to hear of more and more of these sort of thefts as the credit crunch kicks in!!! i have to leave rugs on my girls but i use cable ties on the buckles which would make it difficult for someone to steal them easily! also mark your rugs with a post code, i know it can look a mess but better the horse keeps his rug!

What absolute f***wits!!! It beggers belief that anyone would do this sort of thing especially in bad weather. I cant believe that someone who obviously knows horses, a) to be able to get a rug off one and b) why would they pinch a rug in fist place, could they not realise its ****e weather and she's an old girl!!!I'm really sorry for you and feel livid on your behalf!!
