I agree with Sundance, Arabian Girl you must go to Cheltenham in March, it's the Mecca of NH racing. Then to Dubai Day in July for Arabian Racing's flagship meeting at Newbury
Moosie i never went Arabian Racing at Aintree, but the Grand National fences are un-dressed when not in use so they wouldnt look as big which might be why you dont remember them, or you where going too fast was it Pearls Reflection
Carol i loved the old winners enclosure, i can understand why it is something you would never forget has Mushammer enjoyed his rest
David glad you are getting sorted, and i must say i saw what you offered to the ill girl Aimee in another thread you are a total gent i hope she comes.
Rebeckah are you racing this year
I have Estival, Popidol, and Pigaro coming in this weekend, shoes on Monday then we will have eight, i think i may be insane !!!

I'm not racing as I can't afford it this year but I want to start training my gelding anyway so we get into the swing of things. Also, hopefully we'll be able to tell if he's good enough!

Ah Rebeckah thats a shame, but a good idea to get in some training and learn the ropes,do try to go to a training day you will find it very informative, i remember on another thread that you said Anubis hated being stabled and you where going to try and get him use to it, how's that going ? it will be quite important, as when you go racing he will go in the racecourse stables and you want him to rest when in there, if he is all fretty he will use up his race energy which might spoil his chance.

Hi ang, telly just died so came back on here (fed up with re-decorating and not working tonight). That would explain the partial lack of memory re Aintree fences and yes it was Pearl and yes we were going quite fast!
Im curious to know - everyone who turns their horses away for the winter - do you keep one in to ride or do you just not ride in the winter? I dont think Peaches would take very kindly to being chucked out in the field for a few months, she is charging the fence in a right tantrum after three hours desperate to come in. Boredom I think. Suppose she would get used to it but the field would be completely mashed and we like to play at indoor dressage and sj in winter so its an "easy time". Would be a lot cheaper on shoes the other way though.
Rebekkah you will have a great time at Lingfield if it was a couple of hundred miles nearer we would be there like a shot!

Hi Moosie
The term "bringing then in" doesnt nessecarly implie they has been out all winter it means they have been out of work, shoes off complete holiday, i dont usually ride between November and January i need a rest!! and so do the horses. From end of racing season to after fireworks ( mid November ! ) i rough them off, after that if they like to stay out they have heavyweight full neck rugs and big bale haylage, the one's that it doesnt suit come in at night, yes the fields that i use in winter do get wrecked but they are rolled and re-seeded in the spring and always recover.

All our ours have wintered out or should I say wetted out. They are just turned away to chill out and rugged accordingly, fed hay or haylage and hard feed twice a day.
In previous years I have had the opportunity to turn a number of them away together, but thanks to herd leader Anganate Safinat and his no 2, Notid, I spent a lot of time mending rugs - more than got snagged on barbed wire. This year except for the three stallions, El Buba, Sabez and Call Me Risky, they have been in pairs; Notid and Safinat, TFA Alifa( who will be returning home to France soon) and Plus, Kings Cavalier and Gazal.

Tomorrow is the big day when this seasons racers come in. The farrier is due tuesday and Fred and I start riding them wednesday or thursday, with the girls joining in once we have absorbed their initial bouncyness. A couple of young girls are coming over to give them a good grooming and generally play horses.

Fred and I have nearly completed adjusting and adding to the wind and rain breaks for the stables, which only leaves the holes in the roof to attend to.

As to who gets ridden in the off season, Fred totally stays away from the horses and comes back as refreshed as the horses themselves. I try and fit a ride or two around running the pub, but it hasn't been easy. Some of the girls have occasionally come up to ride out as well. And the lucky horses.............Skyboy Adam, my anglo who stole a 25 length lead on L'escalou and Risky at Fontwell, Shadow, sweet 7 year old lodger, and Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Express is my 19 year old tb who was my first horse who I bought from Carol and Eric. She regularly 'looks' after real novice riders who come along to ride out with us and enjoys her ride outs. In my first season of arab racing (2003) she trained alongside Notid and Safinat and was probably the fittest non racing member of the team. A year after she arrived I had her freeze marked: BXPS, so you see our team is named after her.

Just after 4pm so it is time for the teams last tea out in the field before we prepare for forthcoming season.

Hi Ang, hope all is going well with you and yours.

My involvement started when I saw an advert in our local free paper for a 3yo filly wanting a good home. She was at a dealers and someone had part-exchanged her. I took a friend and a lorry, felt so sorry for her when I saw her that she came home with me there and then. I researched her pedigree and found out that she had some racing lines and thought it would be fun to try out. Needless to say she was absolutely useless at it!!, although her heart was bigger than she was, but I was 'bitten by the bug' and the rest is history!! I love her dearly-diva that she is!

Brooklyn arrived on the wednesday before the foot and mouth movement of livestock restrictions kicked in, and of course in the middle of a farming community I couldn't them ride her.
In time I had a few lessons and rode out occasionally, Brooklyn was definitely in charge!!!!!! Unfortunately with the pub to run she spent most of her time out in the field.
One of my customers, Fred, my jockey, said one day that if I bought a horse he would ride out with me, and if I bought an arab racehorse we could race it. He sent me off to see Bill Smith. Bill showed me a number of horses and it was narrowed down to Notid, who Fred said was workmanlike and Anganate Safinat who I thought was handsome. Bill said he would do me a deal on 2 - it was the best £???? I have ever spent.
Notid arrived in time to race at Salisbury May 2003 and Saffy a week later. Notid gave me my first Winners enclosure with a fourth at Fontwell and first win at Huntingdon over 6f (as you know he now prefers longer). Saffy then amazed us all by giving me my second winner at Wolverhampton.
It has continued on from there with Skyboy Adam, El Buba (Rocket), Call Me Risky, Kings Cavalier and of course the other owners horses, Sabez, Lady Ace, Aqtal, Gabanat, TFA, Gazal and the very handsome and noisy Tiga (Mirage Tigra).
Moving from private stables into a 12 box leased yard with gallops.
The Ford Cargo has been replaced with an Iveco, soon to be replaced with a six stalled Scania HGV.
An expensive but enjoyable hobby.

Linda & David fascinating stuff, i am really enjoying this blog, yes it's great Moosie what about you ?
My story goes, i was big into endurance, i was at the Mendip Hills ride when on route i meet a lady called Jill Jeffery with a little grey Arab mare called "Pearl of the Sea" she told me about arab racing and said the mare was having its first run at Taunton in two weeks time so i went along to watch, the mare won Jenny Brimblecoombe was riding and i was bitten, ( Moosie thats how i meet Jenny B, vanessa and Hazel) after sorting out my private life !!! i was getting divorced at the time, i started at Taunton in May 1997 with my Stallion Amira, he tryed really hard but the best he managed was a fourth at Taunton the following May, i had always been a racing fanatic, but i didnt know about Arab Racing till then, i then bought Mudhadid el Arran as i realised that as hard as he tryed Amira was no racehorse, he gave me my first win, and the second and third all in one season i owe him everything the rest as they say is history.

Hi All,

Linda - didn't little Mebo get placed on the track? Think she'd love a little visit to Sambist!!!

I first went Arab racing when I was about 13 at Taunton and was instantly enthralled. We already had PBA and my dad had a pure bred. I decided there and then to combine my passion for Arabs with racing, when we moved to Minehead I started riding out at Philip Hobbs NH yard, then after my A-levels went to work for Nicky Henderson in Lambourn and a flat yard in New Zealand to gain experience!! I came back and bought Sweet Simplicity(aka Blondie) and Aliesha as my first two after my first year at uni, I raced them at Larkhill in 1999 and Ang and Jane Stevens helped me with crazy Aliesha who found the excitement too much and was all but last, whilst Blondie was 5th in a competitive maiden behind Sarah Kelleway! Ang suggested I up her in trip after she dissapointed over 5f at Wolverhampton, and Blondie and I won the Heart of England Maiden stakes over 1 Mile 2 f(Ang led me with blonde dreadlocks - this pic will be on my photo gallery shortly to celebrate 10 yrs of my stud)!!

I have been winnerless since but hopefully Sakeena Sky Zayin (Blondie's daughter) will change that this year when she goes into training with Ang - No pressure!!!!

Paul.

Yes she did, a 3rd at Southwell in a maiden, spookily enough won by Almost All! I retired her after that not wanting to push my luck any further. Good idea about Sambist-I'll drag her out of her life of luxury and trog up the road with her!

Looking forward to 'locking horns' with you this year with the youngsters, only joking, I wish you every success with Sakeena Sky Zayin-you deserve it.

Get working on that photo gallery-can't wait to see Ang's dreadlocks!

I'm loving everyone's stories-Jill what about yours?

great to hear everyones different stories - suppose its my turn now! I was doing a local endurance ride way back in the 80s (light years ago it seems) on my first arab Nazeefa and I met a lady called Phillipa Jones (think that was her name its all so long ago!)She had an arab racehorse called Rippling Amber who was very successful. She told me about arab racing and also the marathon so I thought that sounds pretty good and did two marathons on Exmoor(right up her street we fiished in 1hr 35 mins with no vet gate) then thought I would have a go at the shorter stuff. The first race we did at Larkhill was won by Kim Bradley on Carabineer. He was given to her by her parents as a 14th birthday present so the story goes (£400 from Joan Ratcliffe). He won his first race then just carried on winning - was 11 when he started. In his second season he won the Dubai Stakes at Kempton Park worth around £7,000 at the time I think - beating the French mare Margau and all the other "professional" ones.
Nazeefa ran well but didnt win (my race training and riding tuition came from a booklet put out by the AHS and written by Bridget Legood the then editor of Riding magazine!!) and she suffered a tendon injury at Taunton so I didnt race her again. But she bred Kazeef Khan for me who did win and there were a few others in the intervening years. I have been playing at it ever since really on and off with some years when I havent had a suitable horse and never had more than one horse to race at a time except for one season.
Whos next - Sammy? Carol? anyone - all most welcome to join in!
edited - got the decade wrong - what a doh doh!! (approaching senility and too many bangs on the head I expect)

Hi everyone,
We got involved in Arab racing purely by chance, our family had always loved racing and had a few National hunt runners in the 70's, we went to Arab horse sales in 1984, which were in those days held at Newbury to buy a Anglo Arab to replace my AA pony who had done us proud around the local show jumping and Hunter trails. We purchased the 5 year old Trembleath Dawn Breaker by the show horse Celtic Ballad, as we were standing around the ring a small chestnut Arab colt was being lead around and being described as “suitable for Arab racing” Dad said what’s Arab racing? Not an idea was my reply; we purchased the Arab Sharir by Crystal prince for the princely sum of 210 Guineas. The next day I was on the phone to the Arab Horses Society to find out what this Arab horses racing was all about. Trembleath Dawnbreaker, never did go show Jumping, he was in fact our first runner at Larkhill in May 1985 finishing fourth. And then went on that season to be our first winner at Taunton, winning by a head with myself riding and Dad training.

We were now totally hocked and went back to the Arab sales the following year and purchased the 2 year old filly Autumn Dream by Autumn Royal and a few years later I purchased Sihrea Crystal by Crystal Magician, these two mare are the dam's of most of the horses we are currently competing with.

Ang, can't wait to see those dreadlocks!

Carol

Hiya all,
We got involved in 2003 when Adam was travelling head lad for Roger Charlton, and I was bored in the afternoons!
A girl called Sally McIlwaine used to ride out at Roger's, and did arab racing, and I thought it was a fab idea!
Adam arranged with Sue Pyke to 'borrow' a horse called Vlacq Halmir for the season, and I trained him, and rode him myself (not very well, I hasten to add!!).
Anyway, saw a race bred mare in the cheap section of the H & H mag, went to see her, and somehow came back with 2!! - Mehshalla, and Mehshiv. Mehshalla was my first winner with Adam riding, and is now a broodmare, and Mehshiv won too.
Now have a yard full of them, and getting ready for the new season!!
WHERE@S THE DREADS!!

the grey half bro is called Vlacq Alatar - owned and ridden by Julie Kendal (by Shajihr - the grey egyptian boy we had, he raced). And the full sis to him has come up for sale and we've no room for her... shame - she bred a fab coloured colt last year!

Right Ang. Thought about the hair extensions but with the winds we get here they would probably get wrapped around the electric fencing!! ouch!

Lovely to hear of everyone's stories-see-from little acorns big oak trees grow!

Hope everyone's training is coming on well. I'm now a lady of leisure (sure!!) as Sam has got all of mine with her. Roll on May! and yes, Carol, hope you made it.
