How awful for you Jen, there is nothing worse than a "know-it-all" YO. IMHO no-one can ever know everything about every horse - we all learn something new every day.
I so hope you find a lovely place for you and your friend and sorry I can't offer you any more advice than has already been offered.

Can't stop thinking about this awful person who would turn out a horse with active laminitis and rotated pedal bones How well do you know your vet? Perhaps if the vet has a word with her that a) the laminitic must have box rest and b) horses who are becoming obese must have their grazing restricted or they will go the same way---it might carry some weight? With the "duty of care" in the new animal welfare legislation allowing horses to become clinically obese despite veterinary advice might well be prosecutable. Or it might be worth getting in touch with your local BHS welfare officer or even local ILPH representative to see if they might talk to her. |

Makes you wonder whether she's such a 'clever and knowledgable' yard owner that she has her grazing fertilized every year, making it dangerous to anything remotely liable to laminitis!!! Any luck yet Jen? |

Zan, I didn't think that the welfare bill came in for a couple of years yet? I kept thinking about that and wondering how liable she would be if anything happened to one of the liveries due to her preventing us taking preventative action if you see what I mean.
The vet came this morning to see the little patient and is quite pleased with her progress, he said that she still needs a lot more box rest and will go for her x-rays at the end of this month. He was appalled at the situation and said that if she had been left out for another 3 weeks he would be putting her to sleep today . Interestingly enough the YO disappears whenever a vet comes onto the yard, she says that they are all the same . Wonder if she justs knows they would possibly tear a strip off her if they got half a chance. Thing is, she is quite young but has obviously discovered this 'alternative' way of keeping horses which would be fine in principal if she wasn't so fanatical. As Kate said it is impossible to reason with a fanatic, so not even worth bothering to try.
Well I'm off to look at a place this evening which has a very good reputation but is DIY. I do feel like I need more control over what can and cannot be done with my horse and maybe this is a good compromise, control over turnout etc but other people around in case anything goes wrong or just for company which I know I would miss otherwise.

Have you had any luck with a new livery yard yet Jen? If not I might have a contact for you in Milton Keynes. If you like I will email you her work email addy.

Thanks Carla, would be interested to hear about anywhere to be honest. Am having a difficult time, spent all weekend trawling about looking at places thinking that I could manage DIY but then took a reality check yesterday trying to imagine how on earth I could look after two children and get to do a horse twice a day. I just don't think that I could do it whilst they are so young as we are stretched for time enough as it is and something would have to give. So I need to concentrate more on part livery still, at least until they are a bit older and more independant. Oh how I wish we could buy somewhere with a few acres! Things have settled down a bit at the yard over the last couple of days and to be honest the field is almost razed to the ground so not as worried about the grass for now. I've also enlisted the help of two people to help keep her exercised so between the 3 of us she should be kept pretty fit and trim. It's the lack of control at livery that I can't cope with, do others on here find that a problem or am I just a control freak!!

No you're not a control freak, they're your horses and you should have a say in how they are kept, ie stabled or turned out. I've had major rows in most of the yards I've been in, cos I've been over ruled by know it all yard owners. The yard I'm in now is a friends private stud, I've been here 7 years now, but even we have our moments when we disagree, but luckly we do normally manage to reach a compromise, most of all we try to act as adults and talk to each other and sort out any little niggles before they become big problems. |

No Jen you are not a control freak, but as I said before when you are in livery you and your horse are at the mercy of the yard owner, and I have been there and got that very nasty tee shirt, hence I actually gave up my horses until I was in a position to have my own place . |

To be quite honest, the time and money that we spend on our horses, then I do agree that we need to have a major input to how they are being kept and their overall welfare, that is really not too much to ask. We are supposed to enjoy our hobby and some yard owners make life so difficult it is almost impossible to have fun. I have known people avoid going to see their horse because they don't agree with the YO or there is someone at the yard they don't get on with. It shouldn't be this way.
Alternatively, I can see things from the other side!!! Many horse owner think that YO's are their purely for their own convenience, and should be at their's and their horses beck and call 24hrs a day. They think it's OK to disturb the YO when they are eating their dinner, or having visitors, or even just trying to spend some time with their family. They also expect them to be a fountain of knowledge!!!
I know this certainly isn't the case at your yard Jen (your YO sounds like a nightmare!!), this is just a general idea I have picked up on over the years. I will send you my friend's email addy. She is pretty clued up on Livery Yards for about a 10mile radius around Milton Keynes, and if she doesn't know she can probably find out.

Thanks everyone for supporting words as ever. I do respect my YO most of the time, she is very principled and I thoroughly like her as a friend but she is just over zealous and you can't talk things through with her which is the hardest aspect. I love the friendships that I have down there with the other liveries, many of us were together at a previous yard so we have known each other for many years and there is no bitchyness whatsoever which is very unusual for a large-ish yard. The horses are extremely happy, that cannot be disputed, but I do think that they are a bit like children in that you have to restrict them sometimes for their own good.
Carla, that would be fab to have your friends contact details !

I've found another yard to move to and am off to hand in my resignation as it were. Scared, so wish me luck !
New place gives me much more control over turnout etc, I do wonder what the bad points will be, not obvious at the moment but there are sure to be some. Think I've turned into a jaded, cynical yardee!

Jen, I had to giggle when you said "jaded, cynical yardee!!" Please don't think of yourself as that, you are just a caring horse owner and want the best for your horse.
Good luck with handing in your resignation (I'm sure YO won't bite your head off) and I hope your new yard will be everything you wish for.

Good luck Jen,
If they are true friends you will keep in touch but for your peace of mind the horses need to come first.
I have moved about a bit due to various things, mainly my high standards of care which some people find bizarre. But thats how my horse likes it and my little foal will too when he arrives.
I have thankfully found a wonderful yard where everything is done as I would do it myself which is great. So I wish you well, let us know how you get on.

Jen, hope it all works out for you I sometimes forget how lucky I am to have my own yard, I rent grazing, but it's right next to the yard, and have it all to myself and can treat it as my own.
Good luck

Hi Jen
Good luck with your move. There's nothing like having control over your horses management. One of my mini ponies has laminitis at the moment and is being kept in (although we are able to give her a bit of 'outside' area but with no grass so she doesn't feel too deprived - I hope). She's such a little sweetie and I was worrying away today and said to my OH that it was awful she had to be in, poor thing, to which he replied 'well, it's probably what will keep her alive'. He's not a horse person, but he's backing up what I've decided (with my vet) is the right thing to do. That's the sort of attitude you need really, not someone who's disagreeing with what is already a difficult decision - none of us want to see our horses shut in or muzzled but we'll do it if it's for the good of their health!
