Not sure what to advise, but you would have a wider choice using outside stallions - one stallion might not be ideally suited to all your mares. And it's cheaper to pay stud fees for a top-class stallion than to try to buy one of the same quality...
I think the AHS has a list of the UK stallions that are available by AI - more and more studs are offering AI nowadays, and will be happy to advise on shipping, etc. And of course the big AI centres such as Twemlows store and ship frozen semen from quite a few Arab stallions. |

With vets getting better at doing the AI at the right time, its a far better option for an owner who wants to breed to the best mate suitable for a particular mare. The relative costs of mare to stud, keep etc probably even out, and the mare stays in your care where she is content.
However, if you have the experience to keep a stallion and can give him a good life, turnout with real grass, company, both human and horse, another job to do apart from a few weeks a year with his mares, then they can be very rewarding.
We kept our boy 13 years, he was as soft as melted butter, loved company, would turn out with mares, or with his gelding friend, or on his own, and could be ridden alone or in company.
If you can't offer this then you should not be thinking of subjecting a testosterone charged animal to a life that could be boring, frustrating, and restricting all normal activities if like many he is stabled 24/7 like some places I have seen, turnout being 10 minutes while mucking out! Not broken to ride, so a life in prison for an animal born to be wild and free.
Think about what you can offer the stallion first.

As much as I love my stallion (he is my best friend, and to me "the best ever"), I would suggest keeping a mare or mares and going the AI route. This plan would give you more choice and a chance to pick "the best of the best" from all over the world.
The relationship you get with a stallion is "one in a million", and if you have the facilities to give a stallion the best life possible (safe turnout and 24 hr care, for his whole life), then I would say, yes, go for a stallion. If you can't provide this lifestyle for a boy, then go for a mare.
BUT, if you are planning on breeding, then make sure you breed something you would love to keep, OR be prepared to lose money, time, blood sweat and tears, or make sure you breed a babe that would be easy to sell and would be loved, for life, by someone else!!!
If all the above fails, then be prepared to breed an animal that you would be happy to be seen in an auction or the slaughter house!!!
Sorry to be so coarse.
