The mares were moved to their summer field today. It's a large field split in two, with one part being a much smaller paddock with a field shelter in. I had asked for Ri to go in this paddock with a pony as company to restrict her grazing. Thankfully, my friend J who was at the yard before me went to check on Ri before she left the yard. Apparently they were taking in one of the horses who is stabled at night & for some reason Ri was going bonkers. She tore up & down the fence before trying to come through it. She got her back legs tangled in it - barbed wire - but managed to free herself then just lost it & went through the wire. Thank god it snapped, otherwise I doubt I would have had much of a horse left.

My poor pony looked very forlorn when I arrived at the yard. J had managed to catch her & was cold hosing all her cuts waiting for the vet, who arrived at the same time as me. Vet managed to staple one of the gashes, but the worst cuts are in her chest above her foreleg, so impossible to hold together really. The vet asked me if I was into showing, thankfully I'm not as Ri will probably be badly scarred for life.

She's on box rest now (on ACP to keep her sane as well) & vet is back out in a couple of days to have a look at her. We have to hope her chest holds together now as it's possibly a bit nightmarish getting it to heal.

I know it's not life threatening, & some people on here have gone through a hell of a lot worse recently, but having to run out of work to find a blood soaked pony in a state has suddenly hit me, & I've gone from 'coping' while dealing with Ri & her injuries to feeling very shocked & meepy indeed.

She was also due to see the vet this Thurs for a lameness workup, as there is something not right in her left hind. Now we will have to wait until all her wounds heal before that can be investigated. She's already had the whole winter off & I was just about to get a new saddle made to measure for her so we could start riding again.

If anyone could spare some healing vibes for my little girl they'd be much appreciated.

Hi

I think this an Arab trait, I have seen many of them behave like this when they get a mate, Jay is absolutely awful, take away Pandy and he just goes crackers, not coming through a fence but just galloping up and down the line, he is fine when you take him somewhere without her (bizzare).
Hope your pony heals well

Poor Rima, lots of healing vibes whizzing her way. I cant believe that there is a single strand of barbed wire at your yard it all looks like post and rail. She must have found the only strand on the whole farm!

Healing vibes on their way from here also. Presumably it was a best friend who was being taken in? How are her back legs after being tangled in the barbed wire? At least there is a lot of flesh on her chest, which will help healing better than if it had been a boney area of leg with no flesh.

Urgh. Barbed wire is the worst fencing possible! My boy had an accident with a barbed wire fence when he was a yearling, had to have a skin graft and was on 3 months box rest. He is now left with an unnatractive scar down his hind leg approx 4 inches long and and inch or so wide.
Hope your girl gets well soon! x

Thank you all for your thoughts

Rima was very swollen & stiff this morning & hadn't eaten much overnight, but she happily gobbled up her breakfast. I would know she was seriously ill if she refused her grub!

The weird thing was, she loves the pony who was in the paddock with her, & the mare leaving is not her friend at all. Her very best friend was just the other side of the fence & the mare going in is stabled at night, so Ri sees her being brought in every evening. But who knows what goes in their heads if they are upset enough to crash through wire.
Most of the fencing at the yard is post & rail or hedges, just this paddock happened to be stripped off with wire. Just our luck. I do hate barbed wire.

Anyway, I hope she is on the mend now & I can look forward to finally getting her a saddle, her hind leg checked out & maybe one day even riding

Hopefully the magic AL healing vibes are working as we 'speak' (type?).
