Hi,
Po is being moved to a new paddock but it has lots of moles in it. The farmer/livery owner said he is putting down mole killer  Before he puts this into the ground I would feel happier knowing it's safe for my horse. He assures me it is, he said it's aluminium based?? and it's what all farmers use to rid their fields of moles, so safe for grazing animals? All the agricultural places are closed today for advice...anyone know anything about mole killing stuff?? Is it safe?

| We have moles in the horses field, and the gardener uses these metal device things look like this http://www.trapman.co.uk/scissor-mole-traps.jpg and then sticks a bucket over the top. I think this what most people use to get rid of moles never heard of using a mole killer before but then im no expert at killing moles, is it like a poison? |

| Fiona, we have the same problem here! I have just bought gas tablets from Rentokil, which you put down the holes. The ground needs to be left for 36 hours before you put the horses back on it, as it takes that long for the gas to subside. It is perfectly safe, so long as you do exactly as it says!! |

That was funny Jayne...but the poor wee moles...
Went round the paddock today/tonight and spread all the mole hills...phew!! am absolutely shattered as they have been busy moles while this paddock has been empty

Ouch Taylor...those look painful He didn't mention a gadget at all, just 'stuff' to put down the hole and kill the mole  I'm beginning to feel sorry for the wee moles now...

I know they look mean dont they?  Poor moles I feel sorry for them they're so cute as well. Apparently they're good for the ground and airate the soil. We always have lovely paddocks when the mole hills eventually dissapear. |

Fee when I lived in Scotland - many moons ago Where I worked - the gardner would put strichnine (sp) on worms and put them down the mole holes A very quick death for the moles - am sure it is banned now |

Awwww ...that is awful I'm going to ask him just to leave the wee moles...hopefully he will. I'll just keep their hills down as they appear. Hopefully though moles don't breed like rabbits We've got a zillion of them.

| The breeding season is from Feb - June!!! AND yes they do breed like rabbits! Sadly flattening the mole hills does not deter them either, as I've tried that over the last 5 years without any success. Our ground is a total mess thanks to moles, and as cute as they are, they are a complete menace. I for one will not be sad to see the back of them. |

Strychnine leaches into the watercourses and anyone eating fish from those rivers can also get poisoned! That's probably why it's banned except in certain circumstances.
The chap who owned the stud where my horses were used to put the tablets down the mole holes. It was cyanide, which is a gas activated with moisture I think and will go down the mole run and kill the families.
I know it sounds terrible and what other method can there be? The stud owner used to say the mole holes and runs were damaging to the pasture. Badgers are really damaging as they make huge networks of runs which then 'implode' and whole edges of pasture cave in.
When I lived in north Wales as a kid, we had a council 'ratcatcher' who used to kill moles. He'd tempt them up and as the mole hole started to erupt upwards, would dispatch the mole (decapitate it) with a swift movement of a spade!!!!

| That shot really made me laught Fiona!! It reminds me of the film Caddy Shack, where the golf course is over run with moles!! It is very funny, as the mole or goffer as they called it, got the last laugh in the end!! |

One of our late & very much missed black lab bitches /Dinah was the most amazing mole catcher!!!! She knew where all the active mole runs were on our golf course (part of the Caravan Park my OHs parents used to own) & she was abso deadly & killed many, many moles!! My OH's father was also deadly where moles were concerned - he would blast them with his shotgun as they surfaced or ran along their burrows (you can see them moving!) ! Billy one of Bellas yellow boys also often appear with dead moles.......not sure where, when or how - as we've not many mole hills on our land!!!

Mel - that was common when we lived twixt Llandrindod Wells & Newtown - in Radnorshire - not seen it since we've moved over into Breconshire?!
Ued to be a common thing seeing dead crows hung up to scare away the other crows.

| i have to say moles are not a problem, and im a real sofety cant kill anything not even a worm and a slug, they all have their place, moles are fantastic creatures! |
