Hiya, Was wondering what are the differences between the different types of straw e.g oat or barley, is one type better than another for bedding etc? less dusty etc?
If you can get CLEAN wheat straw (very difficult where I am) it's good for bedding, barley straw is usually much cleaner and less dusty, so would be my preference but is more likely to be eaten, oat straw is good but I have found that most horses will happily eat this as well as their hay! I use Hemcore bedding and find it very economical once you have put down the initial bed, plus you end up with a much smaller muck heap which rots down really quickly and is gratefully collected by local gardeners!
I use wheat straw evertime, I find the barley straw gets eaten and it sort of follows your horse round in the stable rather then making a deep bed even I could sleep on. I also find wheat straw soaks the wee up alot better & tends to be shorter in length making less wastage
