I was wondering that too, but didn't want to ask.

I saw it too and although I totally agree with you, I presumed they had done it to make her head look more attractive for the picture! Seems a bit extreme though!

There was a topic on the Showing section (I think) about this but I can't find it. There is one still there about foals being shown with the bit above their eyelids shaved!
Some people maintained it was good to shave a foal's head and neck to get it used to the clippers, but I rather felt it would frighten a baby! It's obviously to accentuate the shape as foals are rather furry (because they need to be I imagine!!).
Never having bred a foal I wouldn't know.

Just had a look, wish I hadn't. What were they thinking of. Any one can see that she's a super little filly, defaceing her in this way was not needed. Can't beleive that she just stood there and let them do this to her, she must have been very stressed out by it all. SHAME ON THEM.

Apparently it doesn't stress them Madmare but I just it looks unpleasant. Why can't we just leave them alone esp when they are babies.

I personally dislike it but I don't think we should be too quick to post comments that may offend her owner.

To be honest I was talking in general as haven't looked at any particular picture or ad, obviously wouldn't mean to cause any offence .

I just had a look. I don't think it does the filly any favours.

Not that I'm condoning or otherwise the clipping of foals/youngstock, but just in regard to the comment on how stressful it may be for babies....
I had a filly born in June last year, from my black mare and was dyig to see if she was black or not as she had brown tinges to her coat!
I did clip her head and neck out and she was actually laid down when I went in with the clippers, and so unbothered by them that she remained laid down whilst I clipped her She's not a particularly laid back filly, but trusted that I wouldn't do anything bad to her

I hate the clipping look on a foal, they do it to show of the structure of the face and to also try and make certain feature look better

so say a foal doesn't have very nice eyes they will clip around the eyes in a certain way to make them look bigger. I think it is ugly and also puts the foal through too much stress

I'm also not condoning it but I have also clipped out a youngster and he didnt bat an eyelid, in fact he just lay/stood there and let me do it.

I know I have already had my say but it shocks me every time I see the photo.

I wonder what a newbie would think of it? Can you imagine buying the filly and taking it to a yard where there aren't arabs?

I am sure they would think that she had a skin complaint or something and that was the reason it was clipped out....

Give me baby fluff any day. Let 'em be babies.

Hello to all

I am the owner of the bay filly you are all discussing about, I just saw this topic.
First of all be sure Evalynn is not a sad filly and she has not caught a cold , she is doing very well in the field with other yearlings.
She was clipped in december due to a visit of international clients from America including several trainers and breeders who are used to see arabians only in show conditions in the Scottsdale area. I did not clip her only for pictures as I truly have other things to do . I run a big farm with around 30 horses, that's my full time job and due to this reason I have sometimes to do things for meeting clients needs. Even if I do not agree with .
Currently I am feeding a foal born last week who was not accepted by his dam , I don't think to be a bad person with horses , and I can say that some persons who know me personnaly could say the same.
By the way I also clip regularly my horses at a young age to avoid them to many stress when they leave home for their new owners place and they are ready to start their adult life. I think it is good to learn foals a lot of things from the clipper to the blanket etc etc ...
I do not take this post as an offense but just wanted to bring some explanations because I don't think it is fair to discuss about something without knowing the exact context.
However you are all very welcome to my farm at any time to see Eva and her stablemates at any time.

Just my thoughts

Kenelm - I think your filly is beautiful and does not look like a plucked turkey!! Wish all bald turkeys were that pretty!!
I think that if you like to clip, then do so, if you don't then don't. I personally don't clip them but thats cause I'm too darn lazy lol!!

Berengere, I wasn't referring to your filly in particular ~ I just don't like the look in general. Don't think it's at all cruel and probably is good for foal to learn about clipping, just think that they look better 'fluffy' .

Shame on you!
plucked turkey!

To clip a young foal if done with sensitivity is a great feeling for the foal, I never had one that backs off. Its a great education for later life. In fact most of the time, the 2nd clip can be done without a halter.
Clipping is far from cruel or irritable if done correctly with small cordless clippers.
Most professional breeders clip for advertising, as they dont only aim at the UK market, though many English, I for one like to see the beauty under the fluff. AND its not that we cant see the bone structure under the fluff!
If you like a furry faced foal, then so be it, but dont say `shame on you` for taking off a little hair, its not offensive, its just nothing.
Jump on those who neglect, not those who love their horses and start at an early age educating for life!
All the best in home and barn

I have clipped many a foals head and neck out and not once did any of them show signs of distress, plus it is a good education for them in later life. I agree that any self respecting horse person should be able to see through a little hair but if you are lucky enough to breed a foal with an exotic head then why not show it off??
