Hi Sue,

Must remember to watch it as I was at Haydock Park that year when they both arrived in a large chaffeur driven bentley to present all their dud cheques for prizes. Please remind everyone again on Thursday morning it will be a very interesting viewing.

Regards Diane

I also remember the 'ladies' from Australia who came with the promise of huge prize money, £1,000 to each class winner.

We had decided that this was going to be our stallion's debut year in novice ridden, including Haydock, and of course the normally small classes ideal for a novice stallions introduction had doubled in size. This was our closest local show, so as we were never going to be in contention for the prize money, were a bit put out to say the least.

Especially as the rules for being a "novice" involved the winning of £x in prize money. The class winner had been a ridden champion at affilliated level, but was a 'novice' within the rules! Second placed won regularly at dressage. etc etc.

The result of the 'ladies' was that we in the north lost Haydock as the official AHS northern show.

Due to the timetable constraints, the show committee had advertised the prize money, which was not forthcoming. The main AHS took delight in castigating the show committee, and refused to allow it to proceed in future .......

Fortunately a new committee was formed to bring another "C" show to the north, but not at the haydock venue.

Seems the AHS history is peppered with conflict.

Some newspapers at the time ran the story, they were conning all sorts of equestrian people, not just Arab owners.

It was on the television a couple of years ago. It has some famous showjumpers and also some Arab Show riders on there. I will not name the persons as I do not wish to have a liable case against me. You will know who they are when you see them.

This is a new programme bringing the story upto date - there may be a film in the offing as well! Very sad time for all concerned - we lost out in a very small way compared to the devestation suffered by others- nobody wanted their presentation photos of them winning at Haydock that year with Ms Burton beaming away on them (other than the court where they became evidence!!)

Just think, if the winners had bought their photo's Marilyn, they might be used in the film!!

No such thing as bad publicity?

I didn't know about Haydock, that's the first I have heard, what a shame indeed. We loved that show.

I thought they did the same thing to Malvern, 1997? wasn't it. I remember going with my gelding and all the classes were huge. How can the AHS be so horrible to the Haydock show comitee when the same thing happened at Malvern?

The AHS office itself does the main work for Malvern, under the direction and authority of the council. Because Malvern was later than haydock they had time to realise it was a con and retract the prize money thing before it could have got ugly with competitors demanding their £1,000.

The fact that the 'donor' was 'anonymous' should have sent alarm bells ringing for members who went to the shows just for the dosh. As I said, the large classes were not what we wanted at our 'local' show with a novice stallion, although by initially advertising the prize money the AHS made sure Malvern for that year at least was financially viable.

Call me a cynic, but come on, council are intelligent and should have checked it out first.

I think it's sad how easily we can be taken in by people like that. I think normal, hardworking, decent individuals can't get their head around how somebody can so blatantly lie.

I am a real sceptic and don't really belive that you get something for nothing but I have to be honest, I might fall for someone with so much conviction waving all that money about.

I would love to see the original myself. Has anyone got a video and can we pass it round?

Where was Marilyn's photo - I thought you said you were going to be famous

Bev

PS......did anyone notice how quiet it got on here?

Money strange thing. Class system even stranger.
The old dyke had a good handle on personalities
The butler was a character.
I know there is a serious side to this But i must admit i found it funny that people will jump through hoops for a quick buck.
The worrying thing is how did she fox the queens security
Now if they had the security guard who knocked our generator off at Malvern none of this would have happened

No fame at last - back to the burrow!!!! Well Channel 4 paid for the use of a photo of EB presenting Francis and Majari with a trophy at Haydock but they didn't mention the Arab show side at all did they? (The original programme "Money, Money Money" I think it was called did show a Haydock photo). The photo behind Francis was Majari however. Could the filly have been Minnie Pearl?? I felt it was awful how they showed no remorse...indeed they semed to think it was an enjoyable game...and to say no-one "small" was involved or lost out was not true - try telling that to the person who supplied all the Haydock Park trophies EB ordered and presented...and that young show-jumper bursting her dream bubble. By the way when the police phoned me I couldn't believe who was in charge - "Jim Frost" (David Jason!!!!?????). Now for the film????? Who's ging to play the parts - any suggestions??? I can just se Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders ding their "spof"!!!!!

I thought they were totally outrageous! Hmmmm very attractive women, understandable why they were dykes!! No offense intended.
They obviously had extremely cunning brains, and knew exactly how to play the Game (oh another unintentional pun)....
I did feel sorry for the one legged showjumper though... They shattered her dreams
I wonder how much money they actually got away with? You would think that a few nips and tucks here, and a set of teeth that actually fitted would not have gone a miss.
Paul

Ps I have a picture of the Queen I bought at the post office today, I paid 28p for it, I am putting it up for auction as a start to making my millions... Who will start the bidding at 50p? LOL...

Sorry for the following totally racist remark against everyone else Australian, BUT,
are we so used to the Australian soaps portraying that accent that we are taken in by a person who obviously had no 'class'.

Lets face it , what we saw - we didn't see an educated articulate woman, more a person who would have been at home as a fishwife at the market. Is that what we expect Australians to be like???

I think they were right about the greed though, but there were a lot of ordinary folks hurt in the process. They were after all CRIMINALS. i find it hard to believe that after not paying the first hotel bill they could carry on.

Knowing it is so easy, welcome to the high life!
