Today i have had rugs stolen from my horses out in the fields , poor horses were all upset most of them youngsters, my very bad tempered arab mare was still wearing heres so they must not of been able to get near her, she dose bite and kick if pressure is put on her so in this case it was a good job. I am going to have to buy new rugs for them, i shall put the postcodes on them this time to try and prevent this happening again, what type of paint do i need to use , just normal gloss or do i need a special paint ?

| i use a permenant marker pen on my rugs,, put on both sides near the top then they dont get too covered in mud,, |

What scumbags!!!
WE paint ours with normal paint with either our postcode or the horses freezemark number |

| Thanks Rosie and Zebedeedeb , yes Rosie they are scumbags and more things i can think of to call them, poor younger ones were quite upset as well as being cold and wet, had to squash the poor yearling into a rug a size too small for her but at least her back will be dry, they do have a big shed to go in but they will not let the yearling and donkey in so at least the small rug is better than nothing till i can go and buy her a new one tomorrow. |

| Our local RDA group where I volunteer has had their rugs stolen on three separate occasions. We have signs up to say it's a charity to help the disabled but some people don't care. They have stolen the feed, hay, electric fencing and even the water troughs. Rant over, we use permanent spray paint on the rugs, so far they are still on the horses. |

I am really sorry to hear this. It isn't just that the rugs have gone, the thought of someone coming into your field and being atround the horses is disturbing.  |

| So sorry to hear that. I would be furious. With mine, they would only get the rug off one, at best. I would be pointing the Police in the direction of the local A&E, Mats would go nuts if a stranger tried to get hold of her, or any of her herd. |

| Any theft is appalling but to steal rugs off horses' backs on a cold night - words fail me! Well actually they don't but I know AL won't allow them! |

Ive been hearing this has been happening quite alot just now. Lady in the feed store said horses had rugs stolen off their backs a few miles from mine a couple of weeks ago.
Velv had somehow taken her Fal rug off in the field but I couldnt work out how. the back clip was undone but not broken and 1 belly strap undone but not broken. It did cross my mind someone had started to take it off then she noticed, got a fright and ran off. Would be very stupid thing to do with her as she kicks out viciously when she gets a fright. You also have to approach her a certain way with her now blind in one eye. If someone was trying to steal her rug, I hope she did give them a kick. Maybe she did and that why they gave up.
I used to use marker pen and write their names on them. Might start doing that again. |

I use Sandtex Masonry Paint on my rugs, on the basis that if it stays on concrete in all weathers, it should stay on a rug! Also it comes in light colours which is good for use on dark rugs. I use a 'tester' pot from B&Q which will do no end of rugs, even with the PC written a foot high!
I also use a foam rubber 'dobber' rather than a paint brush (pad of foam on a handle) as they are easier to write with, wash out easily and can be had dirt cheap from pound shops! It may be heartbreaking to deface a beautiful smart new rug (been there....) but it's better than a cold wet ned!

| Try Sharpie permanent ink pens or any permanent pen made by Berol i used to formulate the inks and test in a lab.they may need re doing after prolonged time in sunlight but are virtually indestructable. |

Gggrrr, b&stards. This happened to Rog once, new rug stolen off his back - never got it back. Trouble is, both of mine will let anyone remove their rugs.

| Thanks guys for advice, thats my day filled tomorrow sorting out rugs and marking them, i have brought the two mares in tonight and my OH drove past the field tonight on his way home, i always go up twice a day to check them but maybe i need to go more, my friend passes twice a day and her mum and dad also pass twice a day and they also always check on them but like Quarabian says its the fact somebody has been in with them,the babies are so trusting bless . |

| Sab2 sorry to hear this. I spray painted my rugs with fluorescent colours to highlight their freeze marks. Postcode is good too. |

I've got a white paint pen (like a marker pen but does white paint) it's lasted a couple of years so far - I put the postcode on.
Works well on wheelie bins too (before I used it I had to replace two bins).
We had the rugs stolen off our horses' backs years ago - it's a horrible feeling knowing that those sort of people have been near your horses. |

so sorry this has happened to you. we had this happen to Fargo when he was 8 months old, he was very poorly after having a bad gelding and had 2 rugs on as we had snow on the ground. even a none horsey person would have seen he was ill and needed his rugs but that didn't stop them  the worst thing is i am 99% sure who did it (did some fishing and somebody didn't realise they were dropping there 'friend' in it)!!! and to top it off they are horsey and local to me but had a problem with me so saw fit to do such a thing. i have lost faith in human kind  |

| Make the postcode LARGE as have heard of a patch being sewn over a neat one and then sold on. We also engrave 'stolen from' and our postcide and surname on our electric fencers after one was stolen when we were at a show. Someone certainly knew where we were. |

| At our yard people paint Stolen from and the postcode in massive letters. You can get rugs so cheap now can't understand why people would steal them scumbags! |

| One thing I always meant to do but haven't got round to it yet, was to make a fairly large stencil of my postcode, then you can use car spray paint for a quicker and neater effect, and you can do it in several places on the rug, making it difficult to cover up. Maybe I'll get on to that before winter this year..... |

Thanks again guys, i have painted the postcode on in big letters on both sides , i found some Weathersheild masonary paint in white and as the rugs are mainly dark blue it really stands out, was quite funny, as i was painting it on the letters got bigger as i went along  we are also going to put my mobile number on them with marker spray when we get one and i shall also put stolen from in front of number, good idea folks thankyou. I am sure i shall get some odd comments now about why i have painted huge letters and numbers on them but who cares, i have also had a firm word with the horses and told them to kick and bite anybody who tries to approach them  . Once again thanks for the advice, hopefully they will not steal these ones. |

| wow, have never heard of such horribleness - poor horses! Imagaine if you had clipped horses standing out freezing on a winter's day after someone had stolen their clothes! I'd want to kill the person caught doing that! |

| I have always painted my rugs in ordinary paint with the postcode ever since they were stolen off their backs some years ago. My friend's were stolen (no postcode) and mine were not. The horses were in the same field. You need to make them large letters. |

| Im sat here thinking Ive never in my life heard anyone sink so low as to steal rugs of the horses backs, is this common here in England? should I write horses name on the outside of my rugs too and not just on the labels inside? Christ they are going to look like clowns |
