Hi Ive never used a neck rug , but living at exposed and at altitude in Scotland and am considering clipping to extend the riding season so I think its only fair to pop one on in the worst weather!

Please can anyone tell me if there are any safety issues with using one that is one size too large ie XL when he only needs a L? The D rings are in the correct place for attaching it so this is not an issue.

Thanks Alison

Haven't come across any issues, apart from the fact that you might have to fold back the edge nearest his ears if it drops over them when he is grazing, some horses really object to that. The downside to folding it back is that the lining is exposed so it might leech dampness down the top of his neck a bit.

I have never had cause for concern either but I have Horseware rugs that have detatchable neck rugs that are ready made for the rugs to be attatched and instead of buckles they have velcrose fastenings, they dont come down over the ears either which is good, like you said that was my fear about them putting their heads downt o graze and the neck extension coming down over their faces.

I would buy neck rugs to match your rugs though and dont mix and match just to be on the safe side.

I think the detachable ones are a bit irritating, they eventually leave a gap at the shoulder/wither area or get pulled off by playful field mate. Why not just buy a combo for the worst weather? My is in one already even though we are in the DEEP SOUTH but in our defence he is clipped...
