This is an extract from an advert I just noticed.
3 year old ride and drive filly, traditional heavy cob currently standing at 14.3hh with a lot more growing to do she should make at least 15.3hh+.
Am I being pedantic or is this particularly unrealistic. I would expect the horse to mature to no more than 15.1hh considering it is latwe into it's 3 year old year. My 13.1hh cob purchased at 2 years only matured to 13.2hh and others I have had only grew up to 2" after 3 years. What do others think?
Not even commenting on the fact that it is ride and drive already at 3yrs.

Totally agree.....maybe, just maybe.....the occasional 3yr old may gain 2/3 inches but rarely so!!
If a horse/Pony has had a decent start and stands at approx 14.1 at eighteen months...I would not expect it to exceed max 15.2 as a mature horse.
Ponies also tend to gain mature height rather sooner....a 13.1 3yr old usually makes 13.2/13.3, most, only gaining a further inch as four year old
I am quite sure there will be those who have experienced the exception when a youngster has grown very much bigger than anticipated but generalising... I estimate a horse 3yr old to maybe gain 1-2 inches and a pony 3yr old, rarely more than an inch or so, when mature

I admire their optimism! Guess it comes from ignorance as if they had half a brain, they would suggest the horse would mature at 15.1hh which is max height in cob classes as that would bump price and desirability up.
I think I worked out that for a horse to mature at 15.1 it needed to be 13.3 as a yearling as most height growth happens early on. I might have remembered wrong as it was a while ago when I wanted a show cob, before contracting arabitus. |

There are freaks of nature, my friend bought a 4 year old shire cross tb which was 16.1, he matured to be 17.2 by the age of 8. He was quite a surprise as my friend is only 5 foot! But yes generally agree with all that's been said. |

I agree also; I wouldn't expect a three year old to grow more than 1 - 2 inches (please god don't let mine grow more than that)!

I too would say that it would mature to 15.1 not the 15.3 stated, but a friend of mine brought a lovely horse a few years ago that was a very sad sale as it had only matured to 14.3 at 4, not the expected 16.hh. However the little horse ended up at 16.hh by the time he was 6. So there is hope for all. |

Forgot to add my cob is 4 now so from 3yrs to 4 he grew 2/3ins.Also when the body muscles up or fills out this obviously adds height. |

In my experience horses grow 5 to 6 inches from 12 months; 3 to 4 ins from 2 years and 1 to 2 ins from 3 years so long as wellfed from birth. The books say that they should have made 90% of their mature height in first year. However I am always being amazed by the growthrates that other people report for individual animals so I suppose only time will tell. Some Arabs in particular seem to keep growing after 4 years. You can't get a life height certificate until they are 7. |

I bought Ozzy as an unbacked 4 year old, he was14hh. He is now 7.5 and is just under 14.3hh and still slightly bum high...... I'm hoping he might do another half an inch to make him level. |

Yes we have experienced similar ourselves....Dam TB 15.3 Sire, Anglo 15.2....colt foal, tall at birth!! As a yearling he stood a full 15.2hh and got nicknamed the giraffe
Yes he has grown on and as a 3yr old now, he tops 16.1 and we anticipate he will end up full 16.2......shame as he is so Large Show Hack in type, but never mind, going to be a smashing Large Riding Horse/Cherif contender Ironically his full blood sibling is 15.2 as a five year old!!
He was just 15months old in this pic
