EMW is providing two daily status updates on Paris . So here is the latest:
We've umm'ed and ahh'ed this evening regarding putting on her light sheet.. in the end it's on...two reasons, one the wind blowing from the Malverns to the Clee Hill is cutting right across the farm and she is keen on the top of her meadow right now.. rather than her use valuable calories maintaining against wind chill we've given her an option of adding weight by taking the wind chill factor away.. the other reason is heavy rain is due in by 7am tomorrow..I'd rather she was a little warm this evening than wet and cold tomorrow morning. This really is geriatric care. She's very bright ths afernoon and evening and happy to get the grub down her. Bryan is feeding her the fourth meal later this evening. Now we have her here it's getting easier to 'read' what has gone on in life in her past and maybe suss out the reasons better for her por condition. I'm really keen to hear what our great vet Dominic has to say now, tomorrow will be interesting.

Paris has now a new field companion:
Exmoor Willow and Paris enjoying breakfast together in sunhine but a cold wind August 30th 2012. We'll see how it goes but when we left this morning they were grazing companionably together. He will need shutting away from her at meal times however because is he is the equine equivalent of a Dyson cleaner! Paris is swapping and changing rugs twice daily to ensure there are no pressure points. This one has a lovely fleecey wither pad and cotton lining so won't make her too hot.

Today's update:
This morning Paris got her wish, we moved in, a grazing muzzled, Willow. Bless her she was very pleased to have some company and we left them grazing alongside each other very happily. This evening all is well. Paris and Willow were grazing alongside each other in middle of the meadow throughly content. He didn't bother her when she had her bucket of extra fibre and had a change of rug and some sudocream to allieviate any potential for 'pressure sores' I don't want to make any judgements about her condition since arriving at the sanctuary but she is eating well and clearing her buckets well so everything is good. Her droppings today are beginning to be better formed, the 'right' amount for a grass fed horse, and again we are able to confirm her pee is clear and copious. This evening Bryan will feed her and stay with her while she eats just icase willow gets any 'clever' ideas! though with all the grazing she is having she may well soon begin to prefer Dr Green to brown mush. Tomorrow Dominic will see her and we'll know more about a prognosis. I gave her a long but gentle hug tonight. She is so beautiful but so frail that she brings tears to your eyes.

First vet check at her new home :
Our vet, Dominic Alexander, has just gone after giving Paris a thorough examination. Here's some lovely news she has weight taped this morning at another 12 kilo weight gain since arrival at the 378 mark. There is some caution though as her resting heart rate is a bit higher than we'd like ( it may be that she was anxious to get her breakfast and that she'd walked up the sloping field just before he examined her. She also has a possible melanoma on her upper fore limb, that wasn't his concern but the fact she may be melanoma prone and it may be she has spinal melanoma. It isn't certain by any means and at her age we don't want to go probing her with needles as it could potentially escalate it and isn't a comfortable thing to do to her either. dominic has also decided not go with a full blood panel as again she doesn't need that stress right now and as she's continuing to gain weight sees no reason to fix what isn't broken. She is going onto milk thistle to support her liver and we now have full go ahead to 5-day worm her then treat with a tapeworm option after that, he thinks she's at a good weight now cope with worming thoroughly. All in all things are going well for her and Dominic thinks she is not compromised at all regarding her quality of life which is good news. We will re-assess her in October when he is going to begin her dental work. She is such a sweet mare and happy now she has big fat Willow the exmoor keeping her company too :-) Just after dominic went visitor @Ann-marie Pelc arrived and brought some lovely rugs for us to use but best of all was the first 'official' visitor for Paris ...all in all we are pleased with today as Dominic also checked out Jimmy and is happy with the healing of his mud fever. We think we'll keep the Norodine going and really clear this up in the hope it doesn't come back again come winter wet...it shouldn't do that, we've not had it happen ever before in all the years Jim has been in with us and we've had some pretty horrendous mud during those wet winters past.

Having met Paris today it really is amazing what Elaine and EMW have done for her. She was so content and enjoying the sun on her back Paris is such a beautiful and gentle mare with the most gorgeous eyes. At least this old lady is getting the love and attention she deserves and won't be moved again. Elaine and EMW have a stand at BAHPAC's and BACs next weekend - what they do is such a worthy cause, I hope us Arab lovers can help them as much as possible. Elaine, you'll be rewarded in Heaven for what you do xx |

Today's morning update:
I tidied up Paris hooves this morning, not much wall height to come off but a fair bit ot toe.. also treated her frogs for thrush and her heels where she's clearly had damage in her past, she must have been so sore with those. She's had a good wipe over with fly wipes, sudocream on her withers and tail bone but both are holding the skin very well thanks to the work put in by fosterer Lianne Evans. She seems a bit sore on her off side hind cannon bone where the evidence of previous injury is apparent, I've treated it with a salve and she is getting a joint supplement now which will help her a lot. she's not lame, just a bit achey. Bryan says she scoffs her bed time feed with such vigour, he makes sure she's warm and comfortable pm and Trustee Ann checks her again at 6am..Ann made me laugh today , she said Paris is very ripple-y isn't she...Ann is used to the big heavies not fine skinned arabs... Paris feels a gnat land her so fine skinned is she.. she does twitch which looks like she is rippling! Photos later all being well, we think she looks a bit broader across her chest now, it's hard to tell improvements when you see them every day and we won't weight tape her again for at least another week or more.

And today's update:
This morning, when feeding and checking Paris I noticed she has a discharge from her vulva. I rang our vet straight away but he is not overly concerned as she has shown signs of seasoning for one thing and for another, with her past history of being stitched and probably torn again along the way, it's most likely an exterior infection which will respond to washing off with an iodine solution gently. We will start this straightaway and see how she goes. When Paris was trimmed today she has precious little toe to remove but there is clear sign on her hoof growth pattern of when the good nutrition started when she moved to fosterer @Lianne Evans Her hoof quality growing down is much stronger. Mel was pleased with the progress of the Red Horse Products Field paste treatment too.

What a totally amazing mare and what a change in such a short time. Paris seems to have seen it all in her life poor lass, but she is home for good now. Well done to those who had faith and gave the old lady a chanceand to those who would have given her none |

Update for today:
The old lads have really enjoyed this settled spell and are both looking sleek and fat enough to go on into their 30th and 31st Winters. EMW Garnlas also looks fit to burst at 27 years old. Paris is stunning! she was grazing side by side with little Willow this evening, after her bucket of fibre tea, tomorrow morning we start her on soaked barley as her body is now more able to cope to increases in fattening feeds. We are taking it one day at a time but each day now sees her improving more and more. I am quietly confident. Grateful thanks go today to www.arabhorsesociety.org for their kind donation of £250 towards the ongoing care of beautiful Viuga ( Paris) this is very much appreciated as we've already spent out a considerable sum on her immediate care and veterinary needs as well as usual outgoings such as farriery etc. Another thank you goes to our wonderful @Lucy Wilkinson for a parcel of pretty things to sell to help raise general funding. There are more thank yous due but right now it's time to eat so back tomorrow with a full round up of those who may have slipped through the net for thanks this week.

Fantastic news 'Pairs is a survivor' and well done to everyone who has helped this beautiful horse including 'Arabian Lines' and all the dedicated stalwarts on here.On another positive note for this very worthwhile charity, my lovely hand knitted socks and gloves arrived over a week ago and they are great !!! The socks were knitted to my exact foot measurement so I love them, and I waiting for the weather to get colder so i can use my lovely fingerless gloves whilst writing. This was a great opportunity to give to a fantastic charity and receive lovely things back(from the volunteers) at the same time. I have also purchased numerous key rings to give to family members - again proceeds going to the Charity ( I will also give another direct donation) I now need to find out who to speak to regarding an editorial to further publicise EMW !!! will give the charity a call directly. Well done everyone see we can and do help on AL there are many success stories. Alison
