They have suggested that I bring drugs...I don't have anything. But apparently there is a vet on the yard on Monday....would rather not have to use anything but I suppose if he really won't load I will have to...
My Selle Francais (16hh and built like a tank) would always take around an hour of patient 'humouring' to load, if people got cross or rushed her she was a horror, rearing and trying to shoot off. At around an hour of standing and coaxing you could see her go 'ok, ok, i'll go on' and she would casually wander up. It was like a switch flipped and she couldn't be bothered anymore. Am hoping he is this easy.... The big guy that 'backed' SS tried his hand at loading my mare and asked if he could take her to a Monty clinic as a horse for them to work on loading with, apparently the rearing looked quite impressive! |

Another vote for taking the partition out and using a double breast bar if it's an option - he won't feel so claustrophobic and will probably travel better. If he is not shod I would not try to bandage his legs, as this can also upset them. I would be wary of using drugs on a horse that had a long journey ahead of it, but something like a NAF Instant Magic syringe of magnesium based calmer won't hurt. I would also pack two long lunge reins, and if you are having trouble then attach them either side of the ramp, either side of him and then cross them behind him (you do need two people for this, and keep the reins high enough so he doesn't get tangled up in them). He is more likely to go forwards and not rear if he is moving away from the lunge reins behind him, it also dissuades him from jumping off the side of the ramp. Obviously prepare for a lot of patient 'humouring', and don't be pressured by people who want to winch him up by his head, wave sticks at him, stick the lunge round his bottom and haul him up etc. etc. Take a flask/cold drinks/a snack with you
I'm sure you will get him in safely, and I look forward to meeting you both |

Thanks Linda, we're picking up my tb en route to their new field, so literally the last few miles of the journey. This means I need the partition damn it....! But I'll try and grab some of the calmer today x |

I have been following the thread but not had anything extra to add until now. I had a big mare who didn't like loading in trailers so I used to move the back of the partition sideways and tie it back. That way you can put a full width breech bar at the back but the horse has more room when loading and travelling. Depending on how he laods and travels you can pick up the other horse en route or, preferably, take him to the field and go back for the other one as it isn't far away. If you do pick up the other horse make sure you are not behind him while moving the partition and putting the breech bar (short one) in place.
My gut feeling is that it would be safer to take him to the field, preferably have someone stay with him, while you went back for the other horse as the horses will be strangers and if one of them is aggressive to the other one you will have a real problem.
Good luck with him.

Thanks Barbara, it may be best to drop him off before picking up jasper. We'll see how he goes. I spoke to the owner this morning and she said he used to load in a trailer previously so fingers crossed with patience all will be well....now where is my Baileys....?! |

So glad it's worked out! He looked like a sad little man in need of TLC in his advert - I'd have wanted to look at him if you hadn't bought him, and we really don't have space for another gelding! (my husband says 'thank you' for sparing him the arguments lol)
Have you told your family yet.....?
As for the loading, you've got my philosophy I think - bore them into submission . |

Haha...that made me laugh. Yes I have told them, my mum has bought a 'share', she can't wait to get her hands on him and she and my father are really excited. |

Oh good luck Anna - what name are you going to call him? Enigma? Mr X? Mystery? the Welcome Stranger? L'Innconu? Hope it all goes well and you get him home safely and he gets on with your other boy |

Hi Annas, Having followed this thread from the beginning, whilst at the same time NOT realising you were enquiring about this horse on your Arab/Shire thread which I replied to....I would just like to wish you All The Very Best of Luck with this lad. I'm sure he will soon "turn the corner" & respond accordingly to the calm, kind & patient handling that I know he will get from you. Good Luck & hope to see some photo's! Regards Kim x |
Many years experience owning & riding my own horses. Fell in love with Arabians at 11 years old when given a ride on "Trevallion", a 3/4 bred who was a livery where I worked as a stablehand. I have never forgotten that ride, Thank You Yvonne- should you ever read this!I now have 2 beautiful purebreds.
