Agonia's hopefully coming home later this month so I've visited a number of yards and have settled on one of them.
However they've said that they keep all of the horses passports on site (in a safe), apparently in case of theft (not that they've ever had thefts) or accidents/injury. Is this normal?
I'm not exactly the type to do a runner but just not sure about handing over her passport?

| My yard owner keep all the horses passport as the governing body (cant remember the name) can apparently request them and they need to be provided in a short space of time, she does however keep them at home with her. The passport does belong to the horse not the owner. |

| I think if you check DEFRA's regs this is correct, I remember reading something like that. It's to do with the passport staying with the horse, nothing else, but I too would be concerned about handing my horse's passport over to someone else. |

You have 3 hours to produce a passport if requested by an inspector.
I would be very reluctant to give a passport to a yard owner to keep.
You must make sure your horse’s passport is available for inspection at all times. You may be asked to show it by a trading standards inspector from your local council or an Animal Health Officer. This could happen at, for example, a horse market or road-side check.
You'll need it every time you take the horse off the yard by lorry/trailer - will you be able to get it??
They keep them in case of theft - Why?? Being suspicious, you have just given them the ideal opportunity to move your horse - sell your horse by giving them the documentation needed.
If the yard owner is adamant they need the passport, I would check with DEFRA as there is nothing on their website regarding yard owners holding the passports for all horses on their property.
Personally, I would offer them a photocopy and a visual check on the original - I would not allow my horses passport to leave my possession unless selling/loaning. |

I always thought the passport should be where the horse is, what if you were on holiday or unavailable to contact and the YO needed to show the passport in 3 hours - would they not be liable to prosecution if they could not show the passport?
It is a matter of trust and tbh if the horse was stolen there are plenty of places to get a passport issued to make it seem legal - until there is a single passport issuer set up. |

| I hadn't thought of this until a newsletter from my vets saying should produce passport if they need to give any medication. As my horses are stabled away from home I could arrive at the yard to find I needed a vet in an emergency and wouldn't have the passport with me so need to keep them in the car or at the yard!! Not happy either way really because of the cost or replacing them if stolen or a fire. |

This is a very difficult situation for most. I read it on the DEFRA site a while back that passports should be kept at the yard with YO's, and in turn the YO's on our yard requested them. I said no based on the following: there are no secure buildings there, they don't live on site, I live closer to the yard than they do, I look at my own horse twice a day they don't and I spend far more time at the yard than they do. So on balance it's far more reasonable for me to keep my own horse's passport at home in my possession.
If your horse needed emergency treatment or an inspector requested your passport you've got 3 hours. I think most people in most circumstances could do this, I say most because we all know some things go out of control.
If I was to go away on holiday I would give Kes's passport to the YM, but I would want it back on my return. I think everyone needs to assess their own situation for safety of their passport and welfare of their horses. |

Hmmm this has given me some food for thought. Perhaps I'll have a chat with the YM and see if he'd be happy to keep a photocopy unless I go away...
Awwww thanks Tina! I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to her coming home. As we've just moved house, I had to have a look around for other yards in the new area so I'm really excited about the new hacking/exploring - apparently its fab |

| It is the right procedure for the yard to hold them for each horse, where I was you had no choice hand it over or leave, mind you his Mum lived there and they were locked in a safe. |

| Ooh this is interesting, I've never been asked to hand over my passport! Can't say I'd be very keen to, can't imagine any of my past or current YO's being organised enough to get it back to me for travelling and vet visits! |

I was once asked to produce Kazzy's paasport and also a copy of his insurance at a yard I was thinking about moving to. I asked why the passport and she said incase they have to get the vet, I said, I do my own horse and only me will get the vet, anyway, I signed the back of the passport to say he wasnt going to be used for human consumption so I dont have to have the vet sign anything if he needs meds!!
My vet knows me very well and would come in an instant if he knew he needed treatment and I wasnt there.
I suppose if you are going full or assisted livery then they might need a copy or the original passport. I would be wary really of handing it over.

It is your property therefore a photocopy should suffice. I would not let any one have my horse's passport unless the vet was coming to do a yearly jab and I was unavailable.

| In Italy it is common procedure to hand the passport over to the YO.Passport is supposed to always follow the horse and be available for any control.When you buy a horse,you have to register yourself as the new owner,with the breed association or the government breeder's body if it is not a horse of a registered breed.In order to do so,the former owner has to write first to say he's sold/given the horse to you,then property will be put in your name(on payment of a tax)You will then have your name on the passport,stamped and signed officially.So it is not possible to steal a horse by having his passport!Also,YO have to register all horses staying at their yards with the authorities. |

just my thought on the subject, if you were competing on a regular basis you need your passport with you, i would feel it a blooming faf having to chase up a YO every time,

| vanishtrik - agree with you totally. I am about to move yards myself but the yard I am currently at don't ask for anything, your horse doesn't even have to be vaccinated if you don't want to. I wouldn't have a problem giving my passport to a YO if it was secure, kept on site and always available to me. If it's not all of those things surely at some point there will be a problem. If you wanted to go somewhere to compete for example and the YO didn't give your horse's passport back in time that could be a disaster. |
