Hi everybody my mare has developed one small sarcoid on her tummy, has anybody got any remedies?

| I you do a search on here there are several threads about sarcoids. My girl had the Liverpool Cream treatment, but there are alternatives. |

| I know of one that had the cream twice, came back, then had it lasered off. Brilliant! I don't think it cost her much either (under £300?) Some vets do clinics for a visiting vet to laser. |

My lad has just developed a small one on the inside of his near side thigh. The vet has looked at it, said it is of the non agreesive type (it is grey and flattish) and suggested Liverpool Cream, but also that we wait until Sept/Oct time to treat it, as the flies will interfere with the healing at this time of year. He will come back, take a scrapping and send that off to the University for them to get the exact remedy for his sarcoid.
It seems to depend greatly upon the type of sarcoid as when I looked into this there are lots of different types, so it is best to get your vet to look and determine which sort it is, before trying to treat it with anything yourself.

My gelding had one about 4 years ago on his sheath. Had 2 courses of treatment with 'liverpool cream' and it did go but more sprung up on his chest. Vet said this can happen.
The one on his sheath has just started to come up again and I have just started homeopathic tablets and thuja ointment. My sister has had very good results with this treatment. The idea being it is a virus within which this treatment should expel.
Only started this week so too soon to tell.... but fingers crossed. Pm me if want details. |

| A couple of years ago I had an ID gelding who when I bought him had one small flat one. Within a year he had quite a few of varying types. I think I tried just about everything except for laser and cryogenics. I used the supplement called sarc-ex, and there is a tonic as well to boost immunity (begins with an R, I think) and I also used the yellow cream (good for keeping the flies off too). I embarked on the Liverpool cream after photographs were sent to the Uni. This proved very expensive (although covered by insurance) as the vet had to come out every 2 days and apply the cream as it's cytotoxic. I was allowed to apply one cream myself but the other had to be done by the vet as it was so strong. He had a sarcoid above his eye and this is the one I was allowed to treat but it worried me every time that I would miss and get him in the eye (he was also 17.1hh so that didn't help when he pushed me off my up-turned bucket!). Sadly the Liverpool cream was ineffective so I tried banding next. We battled with this for over 6 months, as soon as we got rid of one another would spring up close by. I also felt bad with the banding as he had a lot of bute in this time for the pain. His sarcoids were around the sheath area, in between his front legs, above one eye and the inside of his hind legs which are all common places. If I had kept him I would have tried laser surgery and cryogenics next, I believe they are more permanent as with this method they can kill the whole thing, unlike banding which can leave the 'root'. From what I have read, seen and heard of with sarcoids is that every horse is completely different and reacts very differently to various treatment. You may well find that you have to try a number of different methods before you find the one that works for your horse. |

The only success i have had is surgery! We tried Liverpool cream 6 years ago on a small flat ish one on his belly line and within 3 weeks it was the size of a tennis ball. In January one appeared on the base of his nostril. Vet (different one) was adamant that we had to cream it, plus the numerous others that he has that have never grown so i have left them be, but i was too scared so beginning April he had it cut out!
Every horse reacts differently to every treatment/remedy. I suppose it won't hurt to try the natural remedies as they won't do any harm. They had no effect on mine whatsoever though!

Do protect the sarcoid against flies--there is some evidence that flies spread the disease to more locations on the horse including to other susceptible horses in the herd.

Just to add (and similar to what Emmo & Touchofblue wrote). As sarcoids have been said to be a virus and every horse has a different level of immunity, every horse reacts very differently indeed. It has been written that improving the immune system can help, I think there are quite a few supplements etc available now.
The yellow ointment I mentioned in my first point can be used to prevent flies spreading it around which can be a problem in Summer (if we get one).
I also found that different vets have different approaches. The first vet I used refused banding and was adamant for using the Liverpool cream. The second advised banding followed by laser treatment. |
