We had our one 7 year old stallion gelded last October and although he still calls to the girls, he has calmed down tremendously and can be led past the mare barn, without even looking inside or trying to dive inside and doesn't try to launch himself over his door, when the girls are led past him. He still nips, but gently now and not 'stallion aggressive' nipping. Bless him, he has almost reverted to the 'goofy' boy he was, before he discovered girls and hormones! Gelding him was the best thing we could have done for him, although I am still apologising to him for doing it.
However having said that, the levels of testosterone differ in each stallion, so some can be calmed instantly and some can take ages. It also depends upon whether the stallion has covered a mare before...our boy hadn't covered any mares.

Just remembered, we have a 17 yr old gelding, who was gelded at 9.
Only a couple of months later, we were able to turn him out with the mares and he was a perfect gentleman and still is (unfortunately, one of our mares took offence to this introduction and beat the living daylights out of him, he still has the scars on his rear end to prove it, before I could get him out of the paddock - he didn't retaliate, just stood and took the beating). He is now turned out with our 3 yr old colt and is teaching him manners, or trying to! |

Ry was gelded when he was 10 after being a working stallion from, i think, about 6yrs old.(He's 21 now)he can still be quite nippy and is still very appreciative of the girls! However, he is, and has been, turned out with and directly next to mares ever since he was gelded and has always been very polite with them. he regularly hacks out with mares and is fine.He has always been OK with geldings unless they invade his space - and he decides where that is! Then it's snake faces and teeth and outstretched neck and half rears. His other stallion behaviour seems reserved for humans - he is a great demonstrator of the "dont you know who i am?" attitude! and demands lots of attention if I'm doing anything with any of the other horses on the yard, it's hard stares over the door and peremptory raps on the bottom of it! |

My boy was done at 5, had covered a few mares, and didn't turn out with others as an entire. Within 3 weeks he was out with a pony gelding, another 2 weeks out with quiet mares and geldings, and 2 years on he goes out with anything! Funniest thing is watching my girls try to lead him astray - he'd much prefer to graze and even ignores them when in season! His 2yr old son was done the same day, and was out with our whole little herd within 2 weeks. They all vary I reckon. |

Ive got a gelding thats 17 now & he wasnt gelded until he was 15 & used a working stallion up to the 'end' so to speak.
It did seem to take it out of him as he lost quite a bit of weight although with tlc he looks amazing now !
With regards the girls he still get fruity, doing the deed where ever possiable & that the mare is willing but on the other hand he tells them off when he feels the hay is his & HES NOT for sharing lol
So mixed really. Maybe put him out with some mares that arent in season & see how he reacts..they will soon put him in his place hes acting disrespectfully lol ...just be ready to rescue him if the girls are too rough (Dont want him socially casterated aswell lol)
Good Luck.
Oh before I go I had another stallion that I sold as a 5 year old who when the new owners bought him they had him gelded, I know they still keep him apart from the others & that was 8 months ago.....dont think thats right though because she has at least geldings (but I believe they didnt get on so maybe thats the reason)
Tough one you have to try a few things & see what works for your boy.
I know someone who puts them straight out with the girls & as they are sore they stay WELL clear just in case ...quiet mares obviously ! |
