Shesky bless him has been working very hard for the last 8 weeks and is now starting to muscle-up and get fit! His weight is fine (475 Kg on the weigh tape and he is 16hh), he has no fat pockets and I can feel his ribs! Yippee!

Why post then?

Well currently he is doing 3 schooling sessions (45 mins - 1 hour), 1 lunge session (20-30 mins) and 1 hack (1 hour) a week and somedays he is looking a little bit ribby (although still has a well covered bum) and he could do with more stamina as his work load increases!

During his schooling sessions he probably canters 2 or 3 times on each rein, depending on what I am doing, for probably 1 circuit of a 20 x 60 and a 20m circle each time, but he's not 'working' in canter yet. He gets quite puffed out doing this, although he can trot forever and he is quite sharp, so it's not so much energy, more stamina he needs help with.

I will be building this up now to what I deem true canter work - staying in canter for a good few minutes, circles, lateral work etc and I don't want to kill him off! I also want to start trotting and cantering out on hacks and using hill work - when the nights are lighter he will be hacking 2 or 3 times a week - probably after a shorter schooling session as i'll use mini hacks to cool him off.

Oops nearly forgot he will also be expected to travel for miles, canter around a very large showring before standing under baking hot sun before being made to perform for a complete stranger! STRESS!!!

So what you may ask - just give him some food! BUT he had Laminitis last year so maintaining his slim physique is number 1 priority and 99% of feeds, especially mixes are off the menu as they are cereals and too high in Starch and Sugar!

So after the very long-winded essay (sorry about that) has anyone used Re-Leve and Equi Jewel on a lami competition horse?

I don't want to go mad and for him to put on loads of weight, but I want to maintain his weight as his work load increases and I love the sound of them - oil based, low in starch and sugar! The Re-Leve has 8.5-12.5% Starch and the Equi Jewel has minimal Starch, although both are high oil, protein and digestible energy

Thoughts?

Thanks for reading x

I've used Equi Jewel and it's fabulous, but unfortunately nobody stocks it in Scotland so I had to order from down south. But none of mine are Laminitic. Another which is good for weight and coat is Copra Meal...super stuff also. Go onto their website I'm sure Copra is ok for laminitics, might be wrong, but they are very helpful. My sister in Aussie uses it and competes.

I feed Releve and Omega Rice (which is a very similar product to Equi Jewel) to my endurance mare as she has had tying up issues.

We only got up to 64km last year but she had plenty of energy and kept condition well. She lost a bit of weight last winter but held it much better on this diet this year.

Thumbs up from me

Thanks Guys - had a proper good look at him on the lunge last night and i'm worrying about nothing (as usual) he looks perfecto - fit and gleaming!!! Think i'm so used to seeing slightly overweight unfit ones lol! AND i'm not doing anything until I know how he will cope with the spring grass

Always good to have some feeds up your sleeve though for when you need them xxx

I know two people that have used Equi Jewel, first horse was 29 lost so much weight last winter his not ridden anymore, I think my friend only bought two bags and within about two months looked like a different horse she just puts him back on it if he started to drop weight now. Second horse was a Andalusian cross she bought him from Spain, and he lost allot of weight in the first few months of her owning him, her vet recommended Equi Jewel and he looked amazing after about a month really well covered with nice good top line. I don't know if it can be fed to Laminitics as long as the starch level is low I think it would be OK, I would ring Saracen and ask.

Hi we use releve at work for the race horses. We found that the horses held their condition on it and we havent had any problems with tying up ect and we have one that is very bad for tying up. I was also recommended it for my laminatic mare as it is low in starch, and i fed it two my now four year old for a few weeks over the winter and it strengthened her up greatly. Equi jewel is also good for weight gain.
