Prof K isnt scary - just very direct, and after all the faffing around with your own vets I am sure you will prefer that approach.
I shall be thinking of you and your girlies Ros. Big hugs. |

Thank you for all your thoughts Ruby and Missy are at Leahurst. It was heartbreaking leaving them, but i know it was the right thing to do. Saddlebred, you are so right about the Proff, he is very focused, very direct and very concise. He instilled me with every confidence that my girls were in the very best hands. There is no need to do further diagnositics, they have LV as he originally suspected from the pics. He thinks it started off eating buttercups (there were quite a few in their old field!), and acute attack bought on by the uv light bouncing off the snow. Treatment will be tough and will change depending on their progress. Dr Knott will reassess daily. Firtly the scabs need to come off (flamzine and bandages for 12 hours)then steroids and bandages impregnated with manuka honey to kill the bacteria. At this stage things will get alot worse as the steroids will stomp on the immune system to stop the inflammatory response caused by the LV. Then they'll tackle the infection systemically! Fairly aggressive, but if it works....! Prognosis varies. Some never get it again, especially if it's a dietary trigger, some continue to get it, but obviously once you know they have it you can recognise symptoms and not waste time with treatments taht only make it worse. So, today is a good day. Both girls were so, so good (except Missy really really didn't want to load, in fact i thought she wasn't going to when she slipped and fell over!!! Anyway, she did and started chomping on her haylage immediatly!) I was very proud of them. The staff all seemed pretty charmed by them. I will keep you updated. Ros xx |

Oh Mogwai you poor thing! I've only just read the whole way through this thread and what a dreadful time you and your girls are having .
So hope that things start to improve (even if they have to get worse first) and good that they are in the right place to be treated so competently.
Hugs and strength to you Jen xx

You need a scary vet at a time like this - no time for fannying around! Do hope all goes well - they couldn't be in a better place. |

I had a call from the hospital today (total panic as they said they wouldn't be calling me over the weekend unless something went wrong, and they'd call monday afternoon!). It was an intern i hadn't met yesterday, to say that Proff Knottenbelt had asked him to call because he was so pleased with how the treatment was going so far! They are changing bandages frequantly, but all the scabby bits are coming off nicely. Both girls are happy, eating and relaxed. Both are sedated when they're doing major stuff, but not for the quicker changes. All good Ros x |

Delighed to read this positive update, been thinking of you and hoping for the best. Sounds like they are in the very best place and how thoughtful of them to call you with some good news! What a relief! Hope they continue to improve and that you will be good to yourself, you have been through quite a stressful time.

So pleased that the Professor is now looking after your beloved horses, and he has given you a correct diagnosis. They will be better before you know it, and meanwhile you know they are in very safe hands. Wishing you the best of luck

So pleased that hopefully they are now on the road to recovery and even if it does reoccur, you will know the first signs and how to deal with it, lets hope they are home soon |

Once recognised and treated properly LV will respond well, for some it's quick for others it takes longer time.
Well done for getting a proper diagnosis and I'm so pleased they're on their way to recovery. Hopefully you won't see it return, normally if they get it really bad it doesn't come back. For some though it's chronic and returns every year but when you know what you're dealing with it's so much easier to prevent it. |

Thanks Shah, that certainly makes me feel better x Well, they're doing well. The vets are very happy with their progress. At the moment they're just gettin g off as much of the manky skin and hair, and they're being sedated every day. However, the skin coming through is nice and healthy. They are in a covered barn, totally away from sunlight. They are both on bute, but at this stage nothing else. The legs are being washed in a very very dilute hibis scrub solution, but nothing else. They are eating and seem fairly relaxed. However, all treatment is being done in tandem as they go beserk if they are taken away from each other (bless them!). It's nice to know the staff are sensitive enough to recognise that and treat them accordingly, rather than just let them get even mnore stressed! The results from Missy and Raf (my gelding) swab came back. Missy has pseudomonas, but Raf is clear (yipee!) However he still is losing quite a bit of hair from his lower legs. The proff reckons it can't be LV because he has black pigment, but i think nthere is definatly a reaction of some sort going on, just not as extreme and with no lesions like on the girls white legs. So, all in all things are looking good Ros |

So pleased to hear your horses are improving. That is interesting what you say Shah about it not coming back after a bad attack. The horse where I work had it for quite a long time but not as bad as some of the pictures I have seen but he has been fine since last spring. I will tell his owner this tomorrow as she worries about it coming back. |
