We've spokent to the police and she will be locked in her stable. i want to move her right now but it's new years day at 5pm. It's definitely a plait not a dreadlock.
I'm so scared, please pray for me that no-one takes my precious girl and her baby
waht else can i do? we've put chains on the gates. they are both microchipped and she is freezeamarked. I'm praying they think she's living out as looks so scruffy. There are dogs on the yard. what else what eslse I can't stop shaking.

Oh dear - at least be glad you've found it and you know what it's about! what did the police say? they should be watching now, they might be able to catch these *******!
I think I'd be tempted to sleep in the stable, with a BIG booby trap set!
good luck, everything crossed for you xx |

Not sure if it's applicable to your yard - but are there local kids near the yard at all? Could it be them playing with her mane? Has happened to a good friend, she thought it was thieves but was a girl local to them doing it in total innocence. Can imagine how worried you must be |

First thing to do is stop panicking.
There have been plenty of horses with plaits in and how many have had anything else happen?? I'd venture very few if any. Rumours are very powerful things that can make us all panic.
If she were mine I'd be at the yard for as long as possible / taking a sleeping bag if necessary or temporarily move her for a couple of nights
Leave lights on at the yard /leave a car there, make it look occupied.

I'm a bit calmer.
The people who own the yard live there, it's not obvious as they are in mobile homes behind the stables. They are going to leave all the yard and stable lights on all night tonight.
I'm going down shortly to clip out her freezemark and I've spoken to the freezemark people and alerted them. They said there have been loads of cases of plaiting in the last 6 weeks but a lot of it obviously copycat stuff which is still just as evil as everyone gets so worried.
There is an enormous digital padlock on her stable and she is right behind their mobile home and the owener has 3 dogs and a fit young son on site!
Thank you for kind words, I am breathing a bit more now and just want tonight to pass without incident. I may move them for a week or two just so the b****** might go off and look somewhere else.
It's very rural, no chance of children coming across the place.

Oh poor you, you must be worried sick. HUGE deterant would be the people living on site, lots of lights, dogs etc. I'm always reassured by the fact that we are on a yard where YO lives onsite. Hope everyting turns out ok xxx |

That's awful - friends of mine in East Sussex had the plait thing before Xmas and the ****s cut the fence bordering the woods and came back to steal the pony. Luckily the pony is not very friendly to strangers and wouldn't be caught but all of her horses were running along the road in the early hours of the morning. Thanks to horsewatch they were caught before they got into harm. |

How worrying for you and your yard owner. I'm sure all will be ok. She sounds well protected, but can understand your anxiety. We live in an area where people like to stop and photograph the view. Am always accosting people making sure its not our horses they are after! Thinking of you. x |

Very worrying Jen but sounds like Yard Owner's are doing all that can be done, i'm sure they wouldn't take her from a lit yard with people and dogs on site. It's not like stealing tack etc they'd have to load her and wouldn't be easy to do that quickly and quietly. |

Good grief Jen, what a worry for you!!! Sounds like your yard owner is going to be an excellent deterrent and whoever plaited her mane will steer well clear. Please keep us posted..... |

Thank you so much for all your kind posts.
I'm just back from the yard and we've clipped out her freezemark so that it's very clear. I've padlocked the stable and parked my car in front of it so nobody can get into them.
I've phoned a dear friend of mine who has two stables and a paddock that they don't use and I'm hoping to move them tomorrow. I can't bear it, I love the place I'm at and it will break my heart to leave all the wonderful people there but I don't think I could ever relax again. The fields are right by the road and even with all the padlocks and chains in the world I don't think I could ever feel the same way about it again. Even if it was just some practical joke I will never know one way or the other.
I can't believe someone touched her, I saw where the plait was. Went on to their land and touched my horse!! I asked her who it was, how crazy does that sound ~ she's so sweet and trusting and as for baby, well he would go home with anyone . What if they really want her and came back as Mandy said when everyone drops their guard a bit? I just know I will have to find somewhere else long term as my friends house is fine but no other horses there and no help etc.
Oh grrrr!!

I was informed by my local horsewatch that the plaits in horses manes may well be connected to some sort of spiritual doings rather than theifs as no horses with plaits have actually been stolen?
Just another theory behind it, hope this is so for your horse and it remains safe. |

Big worry Jen but everyone's on the alert now. Is the yard where ordinary walkers can go by? It could just be that people have been petting her and someone's done a plait cos they have a little knowledge. Slightly chilling though I can understand...
If you need anywhere in an emergency we have a selection of options here, for either or both horses, plus the lorry to collect.
But as others have said, Don't Panic!! |

Thank you so much you are all so very kind, what lovely people you all are.
There is no way someone would have just been passing and petted them. It's such a remote place, we get the odd cyclist but never walkers. K is a funny old thing, she wouldn't hang her head over the fence long enough for someone to plait it she just wouldn't, she's quite aloof and not particularly interested in people for fussing or treats etc. Somebody must have gone in with her and either fed her and done it or put a headcollar on I just don't know.
The trouble is with the harmless theories is that you just don't know. Probably it is nothing but I just can't take that risk, I would die if someone stole her, she's such a kind, sensitive little soul and the stress it would cause her is unbearable to think about.
Thank you so much for listening to my problems on New Years Day .
Jen xx

What an awful worry. The police told me the only thing that seems to put people off is a video camera. You can buy signs from places that sell farm supplies. I thought my toughened thick chain would take ages to cut through. My friend cut through it using a generator and small angle grinder in hardly any time (the key had broken in the lock). I was gutted. And we did it in the dark, out of the back of a white van. Too easy.
What area of North Bucks? I am there too :( Let us pray the plait thing is an urban myth but I'm scared for you. x |
