Does anyone use this in the smaller 20kg bags? used as a night stable net for my gelding, how many bales a month do you go through? He is on hard feed with chop and grazing too.

I use E H Haylage in the same quantity bale, but I have 3 horses on it and am using 5 bales a week....costing me an absolute fortune but the quality of hay last year was terrible. I lost my hay crop, ended up burning it and nobody else local had decent hay.

My 15hh Arab gelding goes through 10/12kgs a night although I am thinking of cutting it down a bit as the summer grass is plentiful. (typical, I won't be cutting this year!)

I like my horses to trickle feed throughout the day and night as this is natural for them and it keeps their digestive systems moving... I have seen some horses get fed hay/haylage for the night at 5pm, eat it all up by 7pm and have to wait until 9am for their owner to arrive the next morning.

Sorry, waffled on a bit there

Please bear in mind that a bale should really be used within 5 days of opening, sometimes less with summer heat. And always keep it covered....(but you probably already know that )

Lisa--- if the bales weigh 20 kg and one of your horses eats 10-12kg per night, you are using more than 5 bales a week for the three of them. He's eating 3.5-4.2 bales on his own. I know one of them is a little un, but Minuette is large isn't she?

Horsehage is expensive ( haven't heard of E H Haylage but presume it is similarly priced), but I personally, wouldn't use other unbranded haylage. There is always a( small, but still there) risk of botulism. I have found a farmer who does barn dried hay the last couple of years---very expensive for hay, but still cheaper than branded haylage,so it has worked out well with the last two terrible summers and one of my horses who can't get haylage because he is a good doer and had laminitis years ago before I got him. Sorry I am waffling now.
There is stuff called Silver Moor haylage, which is slightly cheaper than Horsehage, but don't know about availability nationwide.I had Samantha on that for a while and she was going through a bale every 2 days. 15.1hh Anglo.

Derrr! I thought that sounded wrong....was in a bit of a rush and that figure is probably what I tell my hubby (you know what it is like when you try to convince them that the horses don't really cost that much )

To be honest, though, I do think that my haylage is heavier than what they say. Minuette has 12-14kgs per night and little'un is having 6kgs.

On that basis I am using more than I care to admit Because of the quantity that I use, my supplier had reduced a bale to £5.80 so getting it a bit cheaper than others.

Have to say that EH Haylage is very good. Google them for their website. They deliver nationally....

I'm a numpty too, because, checking back, I think a bale was lasting Samantha just over three days, not two. It is a while ago
