Hi
I wondered if anyone puts oil in their horses feed and if so, which type?
I have been using corn oil as I've been told its very good for them and makes their coats very shiny.

Just a thought regarding cod liver oil. I was told by my nutrition tutor not to use this as horses are herbivores and cod liver oil comes from fish, so not natural for them to digest.
Makes sense, doesnt it? |

yes my mare does have a very shiny coat at the moment so it seems it is working. I wonder if vegetable oil would have the same effect?! |

Im on Simple System at the mo so dont add any but used to use Vegetable oil, then changed to Corn Oil and that was good, progressed to Tesco Soya better omega 3 or 6, than corn, cant remember which. Used codliver as well but again heard the "horses eating fish" thing and stopped |

I have always used cooking oil, tried the more expensive horsey products but to be quite honest the results are the same. |

I used to feed cod liver oil but I heard the same as geegee and stopped. From what I've heard about thie process of making and the additives to cooking oil I would feed that either. I try to avoid it in cooking to it's none of it very natural! I used simple systems balancer(can't remember what it's called now!)It works very well |

sunflower oil is better than veg oil. veg oil comes from rape seed and doesn't have a long shelf life, the longer it sits the more bad stuff it gets in it (can't remember off the top of my head what it's called, know it has something to do with free redicals?)because of how it's processed. horses hwole have a reaction to rape as a crop shouldn't be fed the oil either as it can give the same reaction.
we feed soya and sunflower oil. it does have to be said that veg oil is at its worst when cooked with as it changes the moecular structure thus making it more harmfull.

i used to put veg/sunflower/olive oil in ponies feed to put weight on, i was told it was good to rotate the type of oil you use, no idea why? for the past couple of months i have been putting linseed oil in feed, and i have actually noticed a difference in the feel and shinyness(is that even a word?) of my mares coat, but it is quite expensive. |

I currently add sunflower oil to both my horses feed but one has more as he needs the extra calories. When feeding a larger amount of oil the feed should have an antioxidant additive - vitamin E and selenium so that the horse can utilize the oil that is fed.

i've been adding a splosh of soya oil twice daily in my horse's feed, i know it helps put on weight but does it make them any 'fizzier' no such word i'm sure, but you know what i mean! presume the increased calories would lead to increase in energy or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Jaj ~ oil shouldn't make horses fizzy as the energy it provides is relesed slowly. That's why it's popularly fed to endurance horses. Cereals (things like oats) and sugar (mollasses) provide quickly released energy, which is why they are known to hot horses up. HTH
I used to feed Simple Systems instant linseed, I think linseed oil has the best ratio of omega 3 & 6 amongst oil. Have also used sunflower oil & soya, but wouldn't use veg or cod liver oil for the reasons already mentioned. |

thanks moonfruit. i feed unmolassed sugarbeet in the hope that its less heating, do you think its actually much different to molassed? should i cut out the sugarbeet altogether? she has dengie hi-fi with the beet and the tiniest sprinkle of pasture mix plus the oil. want to keep the weight on and make sure she gets minerals and vits without making her too hot to handle! she gets plenty of good quality hay and is in light work.
regards

Jaj ~ keep the beet! Unmollassed sugar beet is an excellent source of digestible fibre, and can really help with keeping weight on. I think it is drastically different to mollassed beet, which can be very heating indeed (any mollasses can).
If you're interested in fibre feeding & a more natural diet, I can't recommend Simple System feeds enough, lots of us on here use them. Jane who developed & runs SS breeds Arabs & is an endurance rider, she is an excellent person to ask. |

Totally unrelated but years ago I used to have cello lessons with Jane's mother. If only I had known then that they were into horses, I would have left the cello with her mother and gone to look at the horses instead |

One of the downsides of adding oil to a horses diet that I've come across over the many years of doing endurance - is that it will more often than not put the horse off its feed!!! So juggling the horses feed becomes intersting to say the least!!! Personally I now just feed TOTAL which is a feed high in oil (soya oil & soya flakes) & fibre, no cereal, unmollased, no added sugar, contains Yea-sacc - so no need for a seperate feed balancer, has added electrolyes, mint, garlic & according to every horse that I know that has tried to is extreemly yummy!!!!!!!!!! We've used it for over four years feeding horses with different requirements - so nice to feed all sorts out of just one bag -not have a feed room full of sacks of this & that!!!! |

We also use Simple Systems and their balancer Total Eclipse - a blend of Linseed/Seaweed/Brewers yeast - all natural. Our horses coats are FANTASTIC - just look at Toman to see the results!!!! |

i have just started adding a splash of cod liver oil to my boys feed
when feeding oil directly though (e.g tescos oil) PLEASE make sure you are adding an antioxidant as feeding oil produces free radicals when digested which need to be "mopped up" from the body by an antioxidant (vit E and selenium)
most horsey oils already have antioxidants added xx |

that's interesting. so if i buy soya oil, for instance, from my local feed merchant or saddler etc it will be different from soya oil in tesco? it's def slightly more expensive but just assumed they were having to add bit more as not giant supermarket? would it always say on the 'horse' oil if it had antioxidant added? |
