Hi, just looking for a bit of advise. I'm going to look at the new Eponia Ivor Williams horse trailer on Sunday. As I only have one horse at the moment, would I need the full width best and breeching bar? It comes with two single bars. I have travelled Flame on just one side before...this is ok ,isn't it? I would have thought if I took out the partition to travel him it would be too much space? But that is what some people do.Your thoughts are appreciated

Can't wait....have horse will travel!!

I only have one horse, and a Bateson Deaville double trailer (LOVE IT!!!!!)
she travels on the right and then anything I need for a long trip (such as when we go on holiday to wales!) travels on the left - well secured obviously!
I used to have an old rice double that was smaller, I had a full width breast bar made so she had the whole width. She travelled well that way too.
Now we have the new trailer I have taken friends horses/ponies too and its nice to be able to be flexible. Just remember heaviest horse travels on right (due to road camber)
good luck, its fab when you and your horse are 'mobile' we have a great time and are out every week at least once!!

ps. if you travel with partition removed and full width breast bar, best to tie to the right and he will probably stand on the diagonal (all horses I've known travelled this way do!)

Thanks for the advise Dawn it is appreciated I should be picking it up next week or maybe they will deliver it. I am very excited as I can now do a few shows/clinics etc this year without having to rely on others BUT.... I'm dead scared as I've never towed before in my life!! I will be driving about with an empty trailer holding up all the traffic for practise first! I'm also worried about parking it up on the South Downs to return to find it's been nicked!! So any ideas on security is also very welcome. I am getting a wheel clamp, is there anything else I should concider?
On another note~ My trailer can be locked and unlocked from the inside~This apparently is very useful as I was told by the dealer it is common for kids at shows to LOCK people in their trailers!!!Has anyone experienced that

I had never towed before I bought my trailer, and so I practised with it empty first and then when I felt confident I asked my husband to get in the trailer while I drove like I had a horse on board My husband was then able to give me feedback as to how my breaking and turning was!

I was really nervous when I first towed with my horse but you do get used it and it gives you soooo much freedom. There will soon be no stopping you

Re clamps, we quite regularly travel to strange places and leave the trailer. Try and keep out of sight of main roads if you can help it, and we've generally found that local farms or suchlike are quite helpful if you speak nicely to them (and maybe supply a bottle). We've got a wheel clamp for the trailer, then it has a hitchlock that locks it to the landie, and we have a wheel clamp and a steering clamp for the landie.

Have fun being mobile!

Thanks again for the help. So I need a hitch lock,2 wheel clamps and a steering lock. Should I lock the top bit of the back of the ramp with a padlock to? Incase someone might pinch the divison panel and the bars or will that encourage someone to break in thinking there is something more valuable inside? God!The world we live in!! I will be too scared to leave it anywhere I had dreams of parking up in the countryside to go on long rides, I'll be worried sick
With my sense of direction I'll probably forget where I left it anyway

just a though but don't you have to take a towing test these days? or is that only if you passed you test after a certain time?

re the breast bars, i would use both at the front and back, we always do as it gives the partition more stability. we have 2 trailors. one has one full length and the other has 2 but we still use both.

Hi Suzane~You have to take a test after a certain year.
Re the bars~ I didn't mean only to use one! At the front you can have 2 single/seperate bars with the partition or one long single one and take the partition outI will travel him with the patition and 2 single bars. I've been told 2 things 1.Always travel a horse on it's own on the right because of the camber of the road.
and 2.Keep changing the sides to get a horse used to both??

if traveling on their own then they must go on the right hand side. but if you want him to go on both you could borrow a friends horse and just go out somewhere to hack so that your horse is used to going on the left. must say tough that ours never bother which side they go on. the only one we had a prob with was our old big pba. the trailer was plenty big enough but she didn't like standing facing forwards. we used to travel her by herself wheer pos and let her have the whole box so she could stand on the angle.

i see now what you mean about the bars at the front. we just use one but i suppose it doesn't really matter unless you have a baby on board. in that case is could stop them trying to go over or under the bars by taking up more space. i really wish we had had our second box when we had our little welsh sec a colt. nev used to have to clap a board of wood to the front to stop him trying to go under. thank god nev is so handy!
