Does anyone elses arabs have this strange habit?

When I bring Quinn in, on a wet night he rolls and rolls in the stable something chronic!! At first it seemed that he was doing this as his head and ears were wet (something he hates!) and he has only started doing this since he has been bedded on shavings - he's never done it on straw! My answer to his plight was to take a towel to his head and ears and try and dry him off a bit, in a bid to stop him digging great holes in his bed and generally rearranging it altogether! This seemed to work short term, now though, he seems to roll purely for effect! It doesn't matter if you've dried him off when he first comes in, he still does it!

I was late getting home the other night and my husband had brought Quinn in for me and fed him etc. I went down to the stable to see him later on when I got in and as soon as he saw me, he whinnied a great welcome and then proceeded to dig a whole and start rolling!!

Any idea's as to why he should behave like this?!

Jayne,

Can't suggest a reason for Quinn's behaviour but Dennis also rolls like a banshee if he's wet when brought in. I towel his head, ears and neck and he pushes hard into me to get me to rub harder and I'm already rubbing as hard as I can!

He walks in circles, digs then rolls, the gets up, shakes, digs then rolls again. He chucks himself over with so much force that sometimes I'm sure he's going to kick the wall out. But he only rolls like this when he's wet.

I have had quite a few horses who would role on shavings as soon as you put them in the stable.... I guess some just enjoy it!

Hi Vera,

Quinn is the same and only does it when he has been wet! Like you say, it doesn't seem to matter how much you rub, he likes you to be a bit rougher with it!!

I was surprised though the other night when he started rolling again when I came to see him, perhaps he was still a bit damp?!

Strange behaviour! Still that's why we love them.

Hope Dennis is doing well and hopefully we'll see you at Malvern again this year. Don't think I'll be bringing Quinn, but Stephen has applied to the AHS to photograph, so we'll see what happens.

love

My Donkey and my arab mare just LOVE to roll in brand new shavings (the shetland isn't that fussed, he just marks his territory!) doesn't matter what the weathers doing, new shavings and they're pushing me out of the way to get in - have been known to have a donkey rolling on my foot!

(they regularly have the shavings topped up by the way, so its not novelty factor!)

Hi Dawn,

I would agree with you that is seems to be a novelty factor! Like you I do add in clean shavings regularily, but I get the feeling that he would throw himself around the stable as he does, even if they weren't as clean as they could be!!

Sometimes I think he is going to go through the walls! My stables are wooden, so my husband is slightly concerned too - especially since he built them! Maybe by the end of the winter the novelty will have worn off?!

Jayne,

Dennis is on Ecobed which is small square shaped cardboard pieces. He doesn't even wait for me to get out of the stable before his knees start going! Manys the time I've been stood in the corner while he's rolling. Is Quinn the same?

Dennis is lame at the moment, read my Kamikarzi thread and you'll see what he's been up to .

We plan to take him to Malvern again so I'll be first in line to have his picture taken!

Note to Everyone - Stephen, Jayne's other half took amazing photographs of Dennis last year. He even captured Dennis stealing Anne Cunninghams drink and his party trick of drinking out of a cup so make sure you parade your horses in front of his camera!!!!

Hi Vera,

Quinn and Dennis could be twins!! I usually end up standing in the stable with him while he rolls - broom in hand, so that I can sweep back all the shavings that end up everywhere they shouldn't be!!

I might see if I can change his bedding to something else. My postman (who keeps Shire crosses!) told me about Aquabed today. Not heard of that one, but it apparently is fantasic. He says it's about £4.85 per 25kg bag. He used 4 bags for a 12 x 12 stable - It comes in pellet form, you water it and it fluffs up! Says it is so easy to muck out. Might have to give that a go, as Quinn is a really mess bugger. Typcial gelding really!!

Sorry to hear about Dennis. I'm just going to read your thread on what he's done to himself. Horses, who'd have em?!

Thanks for your very kind comments about Stephen's photography. He really enjoys it and is hoping to get to a lot more of the big events this year. His real passion is X Country especially the higher levels. Seems to be keen to get shots of it going wrong for some reason!! I'll stick to showing and boring RC stuff!!

I use woody pet which is the same as aquamax on top of rubber mats..its great..takes me 30 mins to turnout 3 horses, muck them out and haylage..small muck heap too.

I've had to go back to shavings for one as I'm running low and its so much better than shavings.

One of my filly's has a strange habit of rolling furiously on any hayledge that is put in the field, it doesn't matter how many piles I out out she runs to each of them and rolls over and over then grabs a mouthful before moving to the next pile?

She doesn't do this in her stable or when wet!

Hi Joyce,

Thanks for the info! Of course I managed to get the name wrong, didn't I? That's why I couldn't find it anywhere on the net! The local feed mart does Aquamax, so as soon as I've run down teh shavings, I'll swap over to it. Sounds like a fab product.

Lynn, perhaps your filly is marking out who's boss!! If she rolls on all the food, then perhaps she'll detere everyone else from eating it?! Sounds like a good plan if you ask me!

My section A will wee on a pile of hay and then eat another! Hence I always put out at least two piles for each horse.

Well not any more of course because Dennis and Hero will be going out in seperate fields.

Hi Jayne,

Just seen this thread and just had to let you know that Eldor is a rolling machine in his stable. Doesn't matter to him whether he is wet or dry, he just loves to roll in his shavings. Maybe that's where Quinn gets it from??????

Hi Gunni, No it's Millie, Bakeeta's filly who rolls/claims all the hayledge. Tigs just likes to find a nice muddy spot and wallow I'm pleased to say her daughter isn't a mud magnet

Jayne, you could be right, poor thing will need all the hay she can get after all the running and rolling she does

Hi Anne,

Might have known that "Dad" would be the culprit!! Yesterday afternoon as I was bringing Quinn in (our weather is foul at the moment), I only managed to get as far as opening the stable door, when he rushed past me and made a dive (quite literally!) for the shavings. He dug huge holes in it and rolled for about 10 minutes!! There was a lot of head tossing and squealing and more rolling! He seems to do it more if I stand and watch him though, so perhaps its an attention seeking thing too! It is funny though.

Vera, read your thread about Dennis's exploits. I do hope he is on the mend. There is nothing worse than having one of your horses down in the mouth. I've just had the renewal for Quinn's insurance in, and after the sad loss of my friends horse, I've upped everything on his policy. I've even added in Alternative therapies, Vet College livery fees and disposal. Not pleasant to think about, but necessary. It's costing a fortune, but I'd rather be safe than sorry! Haven't told my OH yet, but perhaps he won't notice the monthly premium has gone up?!
