I am going to have to take them off Alis outdoor rugs, they irritate the hell out of him, he bucks and constantly kicks out his hinds in annoyance. Is it cos he is entire? anyone else have this problem. I never have had a horse take issue with legs straps before.

Hi my gelding hates them, when i got him 13 years ago i was told he did'nt like them, when our first winter came i forgot and put them on and off he went!! he went flat out accross the field it took me ages to catch him, when i did he was wet through and stood with his back legs underneath him shaking, never again!!!!It took me ages to get him used to even a fillet string,my mare is full sister to Kaz and she hates them to,yet my stallion doesnt mind them at all. |

My gelding won't even tolerate a fillet string---I think he would go nuts if I tried leg straps. I find the Horseware rugs are a good enough fit to be safe without anything other than the cross surcingles. |

I sometimes don't use the leg straps - purely because they collect poo!! but if its really windy then have to - however the new 'freestyle' rug has the big tail flap so think that would stay in place whatever the weather without leg straps? |

How bizarre, are you sure their not too tight,on them, because after a while i would think they would get used to them, even my twitty youngster doesnt mind his legstraps and he really can be silly. |

I was guilty of that!!!! Didnt think there was anything wrong until my son pointed it out to me. What looked fairly loose and comfortable, was infact quite restrictive and probably annoying.

My colt has just started wearing a new turnout rug with leg straps for the first time. First day out he did do quite a few bucks but he soon got used to it and now they do not bother him at all. But I don't cross the leg straps and I never have on any of my horses and have never had any problems.(believe you are supposed to though) Michaela |

I always take the leg straps off the horse rugs, but i have done that ever since i saw a horse that got its back leg caught up in one. it was a really freak accident.

We removed Farid`s leg straps as he hated them, replaced it with a fillet string.....BUT he just hates rugs, he has just laid waste to THREE, he just simply loathes wearing them and rubs up and down the fence until we remove it, then he is as happy as a pig in poo. I do worry that he `s not warm enough, although he has access to field shelter and nice warm stable.

ok ...leg straps changed to fillet string, still same performance buck buck buck, really cheesed off, fine with stable rugs. I have just realised it may be the tail flap thats causing the issue, will cut that off tonight and see if better tomorrow. Leg straps were loose enough to not flap around his bits and bobs. Sometimes if its a hard frost and NOT muddy I let him out in his stable rugs, no leg straps, just fillet, and NO tail flap, he seems fine then so maybe that. Interesting to see there are some others that get peed off with stuff round their bottoms! Thanks for info.

I have taken leg straps off my outdoor rugs after hearing a story of a horse that got them hooked on some fencing. I suppose accidents can happen any time, but we manage ok with a fillet string. |

Heather - we decided to put a NZ on our new stallion - the old boy Rameed - as the field he was going in is exposed - prev owners said he had never had a NZ rug all the many years they had him.........So with much caution we put a rug on - no reaction - it had leg straps - did them up - again no reaction even with me fumbling round his privates - to adjust their lenghts... let him go - NOTHING!!! Hes quite OK & happy with all the NEW experiences Wonderful old fellow Had his Crabbet% cert through today & hes 96.65% Crabbet - so abso DELIGHTED!!!!!

put a different rug on today with tail flap and leg straps ... and ... nothing, just one canter round then grazing. I now think it was the alpha a I was feeding him that was making him a bit bonkers. He has not had any for two days now and he is back to his normal self. Had a bad affect on my partbred too, never buying it again. Glad old Rameed is doing well, email me a picci when you have got a nice one. Ali is 72.81% crabbet not quite enough for crabbet classes unfortunately, but not bad. |
