Hi Libby, I've just started to use a western double jointed snaffle withh 4 copper rings on the link. Flame likes it because he can hold the rings. It's his first bit. I've ordered a pinchless bit to try also as I have 2 different headstalls. The main thing is to know exactly how each bit works before it's used. Any bit can cause pain in the wrong hands, what is it I've heard?....The bit is only as good as the hands that use it? I don't know? something like thatDifferent bits apply pressure to different parts of the mouth and should be introduced with care.I know what you mean about the 'nut cracker' action! Did you read about the pinchless bits on the other thread? The one I've chosen is a snaffle but without the 'nutcracker' action. This one's for you |

Any of you tried a Myler bit? Ihave a Myler, first type, cant remember which one, but my young boy is very comfortable in it. Sides move indepenantly and a little roller in the middle...no nutcracker action.
Also, anyone follow western riding i.e. "The Vaquero Method"....,or Californian Method....probably wrong titles, but Sheila Varian of Varian Arabians uses this method moving onto the Spade Bit. I have her Trailer Loading DVD and The Vaquero Tradition...really worth getting as very interesting.
Another site to go onto is http://www.elvaquero.com which has lots of interesting articles etc.,and links. Trouble is finding someone who teaches these methods, or can help. One of their articles explains the difference between the bosal and hackamore etc.
I would like to try this method with my young boy. |

i have recenty been doing experiments with the baucher bits. having taken on the neue shule bits from heather. we dicussed the arab mouth (along with others) at great length and the type of bits that suit them. i have been using the baucher comfort mouth which is designed like a myler bit (which i have also used but found that many horses don't like it as the poll pressure is to much especially for the arab) and moves independantly. i have also used the training french link that has a lozenge instead of the flat link.
both heather and i have found that alot of french link plates are to big and enable pinching to occur, with the lozenge being smaller this doesn't happen. the shape also encourages the horse to role the tonge and keep it relaxed. the comfort mouth is proving great for horses who lean on the bit as they can't get hold of it, being quite thin is proving very popular with the arab mouth to and as the baucher hasn't got a long cheek the poll action is kinder. both are dressage and showring legal. |

Hi Libby,
Dont know if you saw my reply to your FAO a while ago, but this is the bit Freddie is in. The Neue Schule training lozenge filet baucher, like French link but lozenge is bit thicker as Suzanne says. Tried all sorts over the years with his nibbs and he just loves this one, mouths it because of the aurigan(think thats right) type metal and takes it from my hand! The NS are very dainty bits so they look nice on arabs. I can only echo what Suzanne says but in a less knowledgable way of course ha ha.
Love to you and Herb

Hi, I had loads of trouble finding a suitable bit for Dulciya. She was okay in the new NS training bit with a lozenge - she is very sensitive and has a high head carriage. But she prefered a soft rubber mullen mouth pelham with two reins. Recommended to me by someone who is used to working with young arabs. She is much more settled in this. Having said that I now ride in an English Hackamore and she is a changed horse! I go back to the pelham though in case with ever venture into a showing ring!! xx |

It isnt easy Libby,
Freddie was happy in a straight mullen mouth but I didnt have enough control so I tried the same but a pelham and used roundings (couldnt manage 2 reins). I had the control but he rode in an awful outline and was always behind the bit I suppose you would say. I think the pol pressure was too harsh for him, yet my friend rides her arab cross in that - no problem at all. Freddie has a fairly high head carriage but with the NS it has lowered and he mouth the bit (which he never did) and really I havent done anything, over months he's done it by himself.
Trouble is they are all individuals and what works for one...............shame you havent got somewhere near you where you could try an few before you buy.
Good luck

Where is the best place to view / purchase NS bits on the internet? I'd like a french link but with neat snaffle bit rings not those that cover most of an Arabs head! |

Hi Nic,
Try www.neueschulebits.com. Loads of info. Know what you mean our poor little arabs can lose half their face behind some bit rings. These bits are very dainty.
