My mare is 12 yrs old, 14.3hh and of polish/courthouse bloodlines. She was bred to a friends stallion who was approx 15.1hh. Her 1st foal, a boy, has matured at 15.3hh. The second foal, a filly, (by a different stallion) is rising 4 and is approx 15'2hh. The third foal, full sister to the above filly is rising two and fast catching up on her other siblings. So please remember that not everybody is deliberatley trying to breed 16 hh plus Arabians.
Looks like I have a small mare that likes to throw big foals. Oh and in case you are wondering they DO NOT have extra long cannons, twisted knees or problems with unsoundness!

We have the lot at our place.. tall medium and small.. but to view them from the balcony overlooking the paddocks.. you would be hard pressed to work out which one is 16hands and which one is just under 14hands.. due to balance.. they are balanced. It is not a great idea to generalize I believe.. judge each horse on its own merits.. size given in the standard is the average, and I think the words also go on to state.. with some individuals being smaller or taller than.. Breeding for one trait and one alone would imo be a problem.. as an older breeder once said to me.. if you were to breed just for speed you would basically be reinventing the TB.. Have seen lack of type in all lines/families and have seen leg faults again across the board.. Breeding isnt easy.. and as yet I don't believe a soul has bred that perfect one.. And if anyone was to ever state that our 16 hand was lacking type I would fall over laughing.. I would call endurance a good test, and the ability to do so over a long period of time.. a son by our 14.2 hand stallion.. would be well over 15 hands, without checking records think he is around 15.2 to 15.3.... 14 seasons or endurance riding.. and has according to his xrays the legs/bones of a youngster.. his last ride that I know of was at 20 years of age. |

I bought my gelding, Astral Knight from Michael harris 15 years ago, at 14.2 he is a slightly bigger version of his 3/4 brother, the Frosted Orange that i had fallen in love with, who belongs to my friend.
At 13.3 Frosty is small but perfectly formed, he is by the Prince of Orange out of Holly Blue and has the most magnificent temperament as do all of these bloodlines. He has hunted, raced ,jumps and teaches all the children to ride. At 24 he is still covering and is as bright eyed and bushy tailed as ever! |

My first purebred mare was just 14 2 in shoes and the stllion was barely 14 1 but between them produced a 14 2. a 15 and a 15 2 sl od whom are wellmade with nice short strong cannons. The 15hh mare has produced a14.3, a 15 and 15 2 to a 14.3 stallion. Agsin they are all nicely built. |

I have a miniature arab! He is barely a millimetre over 13hh, and I'm 5'6 ish though I still work him, and we've had a lot of fun togetehr over the last couple of years. He's mostly Crabbet/English bred, very fine and pretty and a real little allrounder. I gelded him in November, and am now in 2 minds as to whether to loan him out as he's getting bored not working as much now! |
