Just joking lol
On a serious note though, even though the breed states 14/14.2hh as a minimum I rarely see any Arabian under 15.2hh, the majority seem to be 15.2 plus!
Being only 5ft, I get fed up of using mounting blocks, is it just co-incidence or do you think the breed is getting bigger?
PS: Back on the board as a newbie, although I did post last year a fair bit and have watched it over the last 6 months.
Did I say last year? I meant this year.. blimey I'm in 2006 ahead of time!

Look up the Theobalds in Staffordshire - they breed some gorgeous horses from early Polish import lines (same famillies as Holly Blue etc) which are around 14-14.2h :)

Hi Jules, we have one or two "smaller" Arabs here - mainly descended from the Raqisa (Sorbus x Raqqasa) family. Santanna (Rheingold x Raqqasa) never passes on HUGE babies - so if you are offering a mare he will DEFINITELY oblige (bless him he's now 26 and up for it!!!)

jules-mids Our stallion is only 14h2, I think some of the bigger arabs lose typeyness, compared to some of the little arabs. though I think people are starting to breed for the larger type of arabs. |

I will just agree with karen,(Basilisk) Theobalds 'Acorn' is a lovely stallion, and I have said several times this year, how correct he is, and if too small for the current arabian market, what a fab stallion to produce a top class WHP, to add quality.
The reason I had an arabian in the first place was for a nice, quality, riding horse, to replace my beloved Beech Dale (16.2hh T.B.) |

me too! my mare is 14.3 and I'm 5'5...[( but we have ridden over a thousand miles together in two seasons of endurance and fun/social rides and she is STILL up for more!
all the best things come in small packages..
(I would highly recommend the Theobalds too....)

There's a 14h grey stallion in the "sales"! Very affordable too.
Being 5'8", I quite like the taller arabians too, although mine are both 14h3! |

God I couldn't have a Stallion Marie, they scare me to death! I'm after a nice calm mature pony, am probably looking at the wrong breed here lol
But this is my first horse for 'Me' as opposed the kids and an Arabian it just has to be as they have been my dream breed since I started riding at 11 (god, thats a while ago now!).
Irony is I have never even ridden one! I had planned to go over to the Toskara stud (a couple of miles from me) when I was ready to eventually but my own, but they zapped off to the states.
I'm waiting till the spring though so have loads of time to have a look about, it's good to hear there are so many little uns out there though :-) |

Have you looked on the sales pages? There is a 14.1 8yr old mare on there that sounds rather nice. I study them a lot just in case I get that lottery win! |

Rumbolds Contessa (Tessa) ( www.allbreedpedigree.com/rumbolds+contessa ) the Arab mare I bought back in Oct - along with Rameed the stallion - is a real little sweetie - shes about 14.2hh (if that!) & tiny - a compact little lady! Shes just so pocket sized - I love her to bits! Shes all Arab though & boy can she strut her stuff! Shes had lots of foals - my Rowan is one & hes a big 15hh. I will be putting her to Rameed again again next year. |

I am in the vertically challenged category at 5ft (and a 1/4 of an inch - very important). I have a stallion at 14.2hh, best behaved of all my mares and geldings,he's far calmer and willing. At 5 yrs i only started hacking him this year not afraid of anything and doesn't put a foot wrong whereas my 10 yr gelding broke my nose when i asked him to jump a small log in the woodland. |

There are plenty of small Arabs about. I had the opposite problem trying to find a big one. My old boy, Zanthar, was 15 hh, and although I never felt under horsed on him because he had a great big stride, I am 5' 8" and fancied something a bit bigger this time but would have gone no smaller than 15. I saw lots of beautiful too small Arabs before I found Zaharoff---15hh 3". Most of them still seem to be under 15 from what I saw. |

Keren - long cannons........thats it - I've been wondering & looking HARD at the BIG Arabs that now seem to be so popular in Endurance. They seem so oversize - a 16 hh plus is nothing new now & they are the WANT for a lot of competitiors! But to me they look "wrong" - I think you have hit the nail on the head - their legs are too long!!!!
I will admit to liking larger horses - so I look to the Arab x American Saddlebred - Rufus one of the neddies I do endurance on is 64% Arab - with Saddlebred blood, hes a BIG 15.3hh - rides BIG. Roundhills Golden Ginger is my 56% Saddlebred x PB Arab - she will start her endurance career in 2006, shes a very scopy 15.2hh.
I will also be competing Sly (Sharrif al Quua) & Rowan Razy - two normal sized Arabs!!!!! |

Pretty much the only way you can get a 'quick fix' increase in height is by increasing cannon length - as a result, the knee is in the wrong place and the horse is less efficient/more likely to go unsound.
A tall (5'8") friend used to ride a 14hh Theobalds-bred mare successfully in endurance for many years.
It isn't HEIGHT that's important for performance - it's length of stride that counts, and that's a function of correct shoulder conformation (if the shoulder isn't right, it doesn't matter how much impulsion you get from the back end). So regardless of size, it's the shoulder that makes a really good mover.

So then - Jet one of my Arabs - hes a pocket sized barely 15hh - to my mind hes got a short neck...but he gives a wonderful BIG ride - his stride though isn't big but he covers the ground & in the past when doing endurance on him I've been amazed how quickly he gets round a course - so fast that we've had to loose time before crossing the line! Although he never seems to be going fast.........I always likened him to being a "pony" in his paces - but he fools me!!! He must have a good "shoulder" movement!!!!! |

I'm sure he won't mind me mentioning this but Michael Harris has some 'smaller' sized Arabians, largely based on Yeld Bank bloodlines, and normally has a number for sale each year.
Actually the Arabian was known for being a small horse and it is only in recent years that we have seen the craze for breeding larger and larger horses - hence the long cannon bones as Keren pointed out.

One of my stallions is only 14.1, but you wouldnt know it for type and presence!! I agree with an earlier statement that a lot of stallions (or mares for that matter) are only taller to the detriment of good legs! Also I know this isnt part of the thread but is it just me but are arabs getting longer and longer too???? I have seen several that could cheerfully carry two saddles! And I am talking about quite successful show horses too!! |

Quite a few of the Kasadi decendants from HARWOOD ARABIAN STUD in West Sussex are not so very tall. He was a stallion of 14.2 or maybe 14.3hh at the most and the smaller mares he's been bred to seem to produce quite compact offspring. Sadly Kasadi died last autumn so this crop will be his last progeny.
There are quite a lot of the pint sized ones all over the place though and quite a few CRABBET bred horses retain the original smaller build.
Good luck in finding one, ~ they're out there!! |

I also have a mini Arab, Kizzy is very small at 13.3 but perfectly formed. I went to Michael Harris about 6 years ago looking for a russian or polish broodmare for racing about 15 hands and came home with this dinky little mare but I adore her, she's like a little weebol, as round as she is small and I usually refer to her as a horse trapped in a pony's body. She's dwarfed at my stud as all the other mares are ex race and some are French and stand abouit 15.2, but she always stands her ground and doesn't get pushed around by anyone!
She's descended from the Yeld Bank line her dam Autumn Copper Beech is out of Autumn Velvet and by Zehros who both stood at the Theobalds. Small but a fantastic producer her first foal a filly now 5 is only 14.2 by a russian stallion but a superb riding horse and due to race this year. Her second foal a colt is only 2 1/2 years old and already measures a whopping 15.1 also by a 15.2 russian stallion. Size isn't everything and small can produce big as Kizzy has proved, she's in foal to a French/ Polish stallion for May so we'll see what she has then!
