Out of track, but this I found by accident.

A 100% crabbet out of Rabyas x Rissletta, said to be grey, but sold without papers.

That looks like brindling! That is very interesting - what a pity it isn't a colour photograph.

Wow, what an amazing colour. Is it possible for him to be a purebred?

Now, I have seen a reference to these parti-coloured Arabians somewhere recently:

Thanks Gunni - they are amazing photographs.

Pixie has got birdcatcher spots. They come and go in all different places. Now she has white at the sides of her blaze, almost as if it is widening. I am not very good with posting photos and she is on a web site but I can't remember that either! If I can, I'll put some photos of her spots in my photo album. Apparently, Pixie's birdcatcher spots are unusually big. I like them but it's hard to keep track of where they are as they change every time she moults.

I've talked with Margaret Evans who saw this mare on one of her visits to the US: the mare was not a brindle but is generally considered now by those who've looked into the subject to be a 'loud' rabicano roan.

Trabag (the odd patterned Arab mare also posted by Gunni) is an interesting case: this pattern is currently called 'manchado', and ALL the horses that demonstrate it - from a variety of ancestry, TB, pure Arab, polo pony, etc - all have one thing in common: all were bred/foaled in Argentina. The current thinking is therefore that there is some kind of environmental factor affecting the distribution of pigment in the foetus.

If you google for 'Royal Manchado', you should turn up the TB stallion of this name :)

Hello all, I'm new here. I've been lurking for a while, but as I don't own an Arab, haven't ever ridden an Arab and know very little about them, I didn't feel I would have much to contribute. However this topic has piqued my interest as I love colour genetics.

I'm unsure of the "plum" colour you are mentioning Basilisk, is this it ? http://www.pharafarm.com/burgundysun-1.html

(strange, I can't see to get hyperlinks to work)

The Oxford Dun Arabian fascinates me too, as he was of course a founder sire for the TB breed, and could (albeit rather tentatively) be used to explain the existence of Cream in the breed. Milkie (the impossible TB palomino) was a descendant of the Oxford Dun Arabian, as are all the cream-based TB's today. Note that they are all in America, and there are none over here, so whether cream got in there another way is hard to know.

I was unaware of the possible existence of Silver in the Arab until I found this thread, so it is all new to me. Are there any pictures of horses that appear to display Silver characteristics? I've never seen one.

Also, it must be said, to those who do not wish to have Silver in the gene pool for fear of the problems with eyes, let us not forget that Grey is itself thought to be nothing more than a mutation that is guaranteed to cause melanoma. It's not a question of IF a horse gets them, it's a question of WHEN. If the horse dies of old age before melanoma appear, then lucky him. There is research ongoing regarding this matter, and it is thought that the grey gene originated in the Arab breed. I hasten to add, knowing this wouldn't prevent from breeding greys, it's just food for thought.

Anyway, I seem to have arrived at a stalemate in the thread... hopefully it can continue as this research is fascinating.
