I cannot find him online - I can find a stallion called Biarritz (Al Cobre x Ochara) of Spanish breeding, AND a mare called Biarritz (Bi Bask x Bizerra) of Polish? breeding, but the only Fryderyk I could find was by Ganges x Fortissima. Someone with access to a pedigree database will have to look him up for you

He is not by Biarritz! Error on my reading skills! The young stallion Fryderyk Pure Arab,
imported from Poland, winner in races and 2005 National Champion Senior
In 2004, the four-year-old stallion, Fryderyk, was acquired in Poland. This stallion brings together some of the best qualities of the most famous and athletic horses at Michalow, the Polish State Stud. His paternal blood-line is that of Kuhailan Haifi (born in the desert in 1923) and his maternal blood-line is that of Ukrainka (born in the desert in 1815). Fryderyk is by Ganges, the 1995 Polish National Reserve Junior Champion, the 1996 Polish National Stallion Champion, Nations Cup Reserve Champion, Aachen (Germany), the 2002 Great Britain International Champion Stallion, Blommerod and the 2003 US National Reserve Champion Stallion.
The National Champion Fryderyk
His mother is Fortíssima, a beautiful black mare who was the 1994 Polish National Junior Champion and Polish National Champion Mare. The grandfather of Fryderyk is Monogramm, the 1982 US Junior National Champion and National US Top Ten Champion, father of the greatest number of mares of the Michalow Stud (36). The following fillies were sold at a Polish auction in 2004: Palestyna, for EUR 300,000, Ekscella for EUR 120,000 and Eskalopka for EUR 140,000, making them 3 of the 4 most expensive horses ever auctioned. The maternal grandmother of Fryderyk was Fanaberia, one of the finest and most beautiful fillies of Probat, Polish Junior National Champion, 1983 European and World Champion, 1990 Polish National Champion Stallion, father of Piruet, the 1983 Champion of France, triple European Champion and double World Champion. Fryderyk won several races in 2003 as a three-year-old, following the footsteps of his renowned ancestors, who were both extremely handsome and highly functional.

I looked Fryderyk up on the National Horse Auction of Poland and it says that he wasn't sold in 2004(the year when he was offered for sale) and in 2005 he wasn't offered. So I guess that he is still in Poland unless he was bought privately. |

A clue: his dam was imported to the UK from Poland and was a hugely successful broodmare. As a three-year-old he won his class at Kempton Park.

Well done Lynda, it is Kossak (Rushti x Karramba), bred by Miss Lindsay and chief sire at Horsey Island for quite a few years.
Kossak had a striking appearance, being chestnut with a vividly contrasting flaxen mane. He sired many good horses, among them the stallions Kaspian (x Susannah) and Danzig (x Danuta).

How about something a little bit different….
The object of this exercise is to name the handler in the photograph though it would be nice to put a name to the horse too. The questions are:
1) Who is the person shown in the photo? 2) What stud and which horse was he most associated with? (Extra “brownie points” for naming the horse in the photo and where it was taken).

The "gentleman" hadler is Fred Rice. He was with the Crabbet stud and Indian Magic was his horse. The photo was taken at the 1985 Crabbet convention, and it is a mare he is holding - name escapes me at the moment, but I believe she was either the last mare bred at Crabbet, or the last offspring of Indian Magic....here's hoping! |

Sorry Bob, it's definitely Fred - and the mare is Silver Crown by Indian Magic out of Silver Grey, and for extra extra bonus points, at the convention she was 21yrs old and owned by Mrs Bretherton. |

Well done Lynda, the answer is indeed FRED RICE who worked at CRABBET and who was INDIAN MAGIC’S regular handler. You were correct too in identifying the mare in the photograph as SILVER CROWN and yes, it was taken at the 1985 CRABBET CONVENTION at CRABBET PARK – so its triple extra extra brownie points to you!
Fred Rice with Indian Magic in 1957
Fred Rice was born in 1905 and started work at Crabbet Park, where his father was a gardener, at the age of 14. An account of Fred’s life at Crabbet can be found in his entertaining book ‘Chestnuts, Greys and Rodeo Days – My Life at Crabbet Park’ published in 1993. He recounts many stories including the fact that the first horse he broke to ride was the famous Raffles and of course memories of Indian Magic, a horse he knew for all his life and who was, in his words “a character.” Indian Magic was foaled at Crabbet in 1944 (Raktha x Indian Crown) and was the last horse to be left at the stud when it disbanded. Deidre Hyde wrote the following description of him in the December 1993 issue of ‘Arabian Horse World’:
“Indian Magic has been considered Lady Wentworth’s masterpiece. A slow maturing horse, he did not become British National Champion until he was 13. Fortunately he was brought out of retirement to parade at the Arab Show in 1970, and it is from that appearance that I remember his awe-inspiring presence. He was milk-white and stood head and shoulders above everything around him, truly with the look of eagles. Indian Magic was not always easy to handle – indeed the only handler he accepted was stud groom Fred Rice from Crabbet, but doubtless it was this temperament that has made his descendants so bold and competitive in performance.”
Deidre wasn’t the only person to be so taken with him as I too saw him for the first time at that same show and can remember how impressive he was – like a large marble statue – truly magnificent.

Caroline Thank you kindly for the bonus points - what am I going to do with them all? Was 1970 the year when Jill Thomas put on the magnificent parade at the National show, because I still have the programme, as it was there too that I saw Indian Magic, with family members. What a magical horse! |

Yes, 1970 is the year we had the ‘Parade of Progeny and Personalities’ at the AHS Show and the list is a roll call of the most famous and unforgettable Pure, Part and Anglo-Arabians. For those who are interested the groups were:
Pure Breds Group A - Indian Magic group with Simra, Scindian Magic, Marinella, Sancho Sanchez and Astur. Group B – Blue Domino group with Manto (who had his own group), Blue Halo, Fari, Scindigo Blue and Golden Treasure. Group C - General Grant group with General D’Orsaz, Fantasy in Blue, Cydella, Zulka and Blue Iris. Group D – Indian King group with Sunlight’s Allegro, Tarantella, Song of India, Delilah and Infanta. Group E – Manto group with Azara, Samantha and Huftan. Group F – Mikeno group with El Meluk, Rajmek, Ringing Gold, Marino Marini and Minetta.
Anglo-Arab and Part-Bred Arabs Group G – Mikeno group with Ermine Toes, Grand Finale, Penarth, My Colleen and Micawber. Group H- Comfort’s Cascade group with Comfort’s Challenger, Fun Fair and Michaelmas. Group J – Manto group with Dancing Master and Dancing Instructor.
One of the horses on this list is shown in old age below:
WHO IS HE? The two horses shown below were not at the show but they are related to the horse above – WHO ARE THEY AND HOW ARE THEY RELATED?
Have fun!
