Well i feel terrible my 4 yr old cat has a flea allergy so i decided to treat her the yr old kitten and dog. dog no probs kitten easy cat thats loosing hair jumped off covering me in oily gunk! Finnally washed it off and carried on with the day as you do with 2 small kids and a mountain of washing. Doorbell goes, its my neighbour looking really worried, " ive just seen your kitten and shes not right she ran off!" Normally she goes in next door to play with her daughter. i went into her garden and the poor thing was foaming at the mouth shaking and had masivly dilated pupils (ruled out car accident im thinking allergic reaction) she let me catch her i rang vet and chucked kids in the car 10 mins later vet asks was it bob martin? could it of been for dogs? my heart drooped they looked the same but i gave her the wrong one! they worked on her for 3 hours the vet took her home with her but rang me at 8 to say pixie had passed on. I collected her this morning and burried her next to my other cat that got run over last summer. Apparently a cat dies every day in the uk from poisoning from this product! but as the box says for doggs and its in minute unreadable writting on the sachet it is legal to sell in supermarkets. As if loosing a kiten isnt bad enough i have to live with the fact it my fault!
I wont be buying bob martin ever again the vets apperntly tried to get it banned but no luck due to the above factors. Makes me even sicker.

Oh that's awful jacki, very very sad.
You must try not to feel guilty (though I know you will), it was such an easy mistake to make.
If the vets are trying to get it banned, and the writing is almost impossible to read you really shouldn't be feeling at fault.
It won't help your pain, but it's good that you've highlighted this potential problem, I know I wouldn't have imagined it could harm cats.
I hope you're feeling better soon x |

Forgot to ask, did you use the dog treatment on your older cat too? If so was he/she unaffected? |

Thanks for the support. I feel so stupid but had to tell people i would hate to think if id said nothing it could happen to someone else and i could of helped prevent it.
Yes i did treat my other cat but being so jumpy i got covered and very little got her. the vet sent me home for her they shaved her on the back of her neck and shoulders then bathed her (So she was thrilled) they kept her in for a few hours observation but she is fine thank god. I have to watch her for 2 days then the vet will prescribe a tratment for her.
We are going away in half term so i have bought a spray to do the house witth while its empty. (just in case) I got it from the vet and then hopefully my cats reaction to the bites will clear up and she will be more comfortable. |

I feel very sorry for you - how horrible. Try not to feel so guilty though: it was a genuine mistake, and so easy to do... but I don't suppose that's much comfort. Golly, there go all of us. |

So sorry you must feel dreadful, I did the same with my dog last year. Put a Bob Martin flea collar on her, she was an elderly dog and next morning she couldn't get up. Took the collar off but had to have her put down the next day so I know what you are going through. I would never use Bob Martin products again |

I am so sorry! I'm not sure iof this will make you feel better or worse. I work as a V.N at an emergency night clinic. The incidence of permethrin poisoning in cats (usually as a result of the well meaning owner using an off the shelf deflea product ie bob Martins!) is unbelievably high! It's appalling that this product is still on the market IT IS POISON TO CATS! My advice would be to contact trading standards, and Bob Martins. I know it was the dog product you applied, but just in my experience i have encountered this mistake happening many many times. It's like labelling a bleach bottle in a similar way to a children's drink, or a tube of smarties like a bottle of paracetamol! R.I.P kitten. To get good quality, effective flea preparations you don't even have to visit your vets anymore. Pharmacies are now licenced to sell animal products. If they don't have what you need in stock they will order it and it will arrive the next day (and they're usually cheaper than your vets!). Ros |

Oh Jackie, that is so sad. I guess it was an easy mistake to make. Please dont beat yourself up about it. It wasnt deliberate and that is what you have to concentrate on. I know no matter what anyone says you will still feel really bad but try not to. Big hugs to you xxx |

So so sorry, what a horrible thing to happen! RIP little Kitten!
I know it's hard but please do not beat yourself up about it! If it helps you could use your story to try and get the product banned - i'm not sure how? Maybe contact the Animal Charities and your MP and local newspaper? |

Just clicked on that link jacki - I am appalled that Bob Martin products are still be sold in supermarkets. Seems it can kill dogs too. Perhaps we can all do our bit and let Tesco (or whoever) know just how lethal this stuff is, then at least your kitten will not have died in vain. |

How terrible. Poor you.
I have become paranoid about checking the dates on the Frontline I have for the cats, as apparently that and also Advantage Flea stuff that you drop on the back of the neck can also be lethal if it is out of date. I also ban lillies from the house after a friend lost her cat after getting pollen on it from Tiger Lillies.
Try not to beat yourself up too much. B |

Something has to be done to take such a terrible product off the market and it would normally be such a household brand name that everyone thinks they can trust, how wrong can you be. After composing you letter an idea might be to send it to Trading Standards and Watchdog you need as much awareness as possible. RIP little cherub |
