Following on from the "No trick photography" thread, I have, with permission of Fabberge's owner, taken these photographs which she has kindly agreed that I can post on this forum. Mary would like me to point out that he's not looking his best as he had a life-threatening obstruction in the winter and he is still getting over it.

What do you all think of him? Just to remind you, he is by Crystal Magician out of Farosa and is a very elderly stallion who lives with a mare and a little pony - and has emus next door!

Well he is unusual!! Did he sire any foals and do any of them have unusual markings?? I like a lot of white but never seen a purebred with appy spots!

Mandy (Tomos)'s fab producing broodmare Cacharel is by this stallion, so the much admired Dark Prince and Dark Shah are his grandsons.
ps was he always this colour ie 'extreme sabino' or is this extreme Arabian fading syndrome ( not a worry if it is,just wondered!).
Our Sealy has white spots and more have come as she has got older though some have come and gone, in her case it is AFS as Sabino markings themselves don't change as far as I am aware, though she IS also a chestnut sabino just to complicate matters!

Well, I did tell you he was "spotted" in my original thread but I don't think anyone believed me!

Lisa-Rachel, he hasn't always had these markings - until his teens he was a "bog-standard" bay with white stockings - with no unusual features.

He sired quite a few foals when he was standing at stud at Pulpits but I don't think he's covered anything for years so I think his youngest progeny are around 15 years old.

Wow! What fantastic markings. My mare is sabino and gets more little white spots every year (although the original sabino markings don't change) but I've never seen anything like this before!

I think he is lovely, individual, and obviously lucky, because sounds like he has a great life!

I have a bay stallion with similar marking, his face is very similar or though less marked and his legs are still bay, his groins are marked as is his scrotum.

This is really interesting. He has amazing and very attractive spots!!! A friend of mine has a mare by Crystal Magician out of Bint Ludoet and she also had similar spots, not quite as dramatic though - she looked like she had stood under an apple blossom tree when the petals fell. The owners fed her Total Eclipse and the spots all but disappeared. I've heard that the loss of pigment/spots can be due to something lacking in the soil, but not completely sure what.

Sorry to disappoint, but if he was 'bog standard bay' to begin with, then that is what he still is, rather than extensive sabino. Some horses get age-related pigment loss, primarily on the head - I think he may be an extreme example of this, or he may have some other (benign) underlying condition that accounts for the pigment loss. Certainly, none of his immediate relations have markings this extensive

Lovely markings! One of my chestnuts has the odd spot, and her grandmother had a fair few but nothing like that.

I also agree that attractive as this may be it probably wouldn't be passed on.
A friend of mine had a half Arab chestnut mare who got more and more white spots as she got older. As Tahir says it looked just as if she'd been standing under a tree full of blossom and got covered in petals. At the time of her death she looked almost Appaloosa. She had several foals, all chestnut and to my knowledge none of them are spotty.

These are the 'birdcatcher spots' that folk have mentioned bon other threads - but I've never seen any as large as on Fabberge, which is what makes me think there is another cause. Also, they tend to be mainly on the upper part of the body, just the opposite to Fabberge's spots!!

You are absoluteley right Keren
I was merely pointing out that as you said if the horse starts off as a solid colour and acquires these spots in later life it is unlikely to be an inheritable trait.

Look at this link - 8th picture down 'Not I' looks like very similar colour pattern doesn't it.

I hope that someone updates allbreeds with his progeny because when I looked he only had two listed.

He really is very unusual, sorry to hear he hasn't been well, Cacharel has had small spots appearing from when she was about 18, she's just coming up to 21 but they are nothing compared to this.

Caryn, has Mary got any photo's prior to the spot transformation ? it would be intereting to see the extent, I have one scanned photo of Fabberge when he was younger and just bay but I think the quality would be too poor to use.
