I think I've mentioned before that there's a purebred stallion near me that is bay.....but he became spotted in later life!

This isn't a good photo (taken by mobile when I was out on a hack yesterday) but I promise you that this is a purebred Arab:

Fabberge (Crystal Magician x Farosa)

None of his stock (that I know of) have developed spots and his owner has had veterinary tests but apparently no reason could be found for this change of coat colour.

Well how unusual I wonder if it's a bit like when they lose the pigment round their eyes. Looks pretty though

Lovely!
My 4 year old Ruger AMW daughter has spots, big blobs of white on a dark chestnut coat - sadly she is now starting to grey out (at 4!!) so guess we'll lose the spots too.

My liver chestnut mare got "snowflakes". It comes through a certain line, I was told, will try and remember the horse I was told passed it on; very famous but can't remember offhand who he was.

Hi Caryn, we have Fabberge's daughter Cacharel and she is developing more and more spots, she is chestnut, I'll try and take some close up pics to show you. Fabberge's owner told me that the lower half of his body faded out first and it almost looked like he had been painted, I'd love to see somemore photos, he's quite an old boy now,

Tomos,
If I remember correctly Cacharel was bred by Brenda Coombes. She was out of a big, scopey chestnut mare Farah's Fantasy (who I used to show as a youngster). How strange that none of the three offspring up the road from me have got spots:
1993 Fabberjo = Fabberge x Briar (Mikhan of Pulpits x Bint Rushna)
1993 Abbie = Fabberge x Moon Fantasy (Cochise x Castanea) who is therefore very closely related to Cacharel as Farah's Fantasy is also out of Moon Fantasy
1994 Asti = Fabberge x Blue Sundancer (Mikhan of Pulpits x Blue Dawn)

By the way, AllBreeds has the incorrect date of birth for Moon Fantasy, showing as 2000! Moon was actually one of the Fantasy twins (the other being Star), born at Pulpits in the drought of 1976. Moon always threw the better foal of the two.

I'll speak to Mary and see if I can get some better pictures of Fabberge if you like.

For "spotted", read "sabino colouring". I believe that Lady Anne blunt brought it to Crabbet through Mesaoud, so it's very respectable!

We have Shadowed Gold here at Seren, and she's very sabino:

There is another type of white spotting, known as birdcatcher spots, which are about the size of a 5p and develop as the horse ages (usually start to show up from 9yo onwards). They are most common on - but not restricted to - chestnuts.

BTW, I was watching 'The Four Feathers' on Film4 today - the version that was filmed on location in Egypt & Sudan in the 1930s - and one of the actors was riding a very loud chestnut sabino with a big belly spot on the offside and wonderfully curly ears!
