My friend, who lost her mare to colic in November, has just bought an ex racer. She is over the moon and he is a lovely lad. This is him when he was racing. He is 17.2!!
Problem is we hacked out together yesterday and my mare really struggles to keep up with his powerful walk. I had to let her jog or trot to catch up. She was buggered when we got back bless her! I know it will keep her fit but will it do any harm to her legs? I will go out alone sometimes but I don't want to tell my friend I can't hack with her because her horse is too fast. Its no good putting him behind her because it winds him up. Any thoughts guys? Magic seemed happy enough.

Hmmm not an easy one when paces are so differently matched. You dont want to get your girl into the habit of jogging and it doesn't make for a great ride (or chat!) if you are continually getting left behind then trotting to catch up. Nor will it be much fun for your friend trying to contain an ex-racer who is used to going everywhere energetically!
Hard to say whether it will do your mares legs any harm as it will depend on how fit she is and the terrain you are going over.
Maybe the best you can hope for is to discuss the problem with your friend and see whether you can both meet in the middle, with your mare walking out and your friends horse shortening his stride. It might not be enough to solve the problem though Im afraid. Maybe when your friends horse settles into his new life a little more he will chill out and slow up. Fingers crossed!
P.S. I do know a 16.2 that can easily out walk an 18.2 when he wants to, so there is hope for those with shorter legs! |

my 15 yr old 14.3 'babysits' my friends 17.3 warmblood... we must look ridiculous, he hides behind her when there's scary things! but she out-trots him every time....maybe in time things will even out, my girls very bestest friend is Molly the cob... 15h-leg-at-each-corner kinda girl.... they keep pace, except on uphill trots...Moll gives in and we wait for her at the top hope you have fun 'together' ...eventually, I'm sure you will if you are good friends, I find the horses pick up on it Dawn x

Cant you ask your friend to slow her horse's walk down a bit so you can keep up? My YO has a baby WB (15.2) which has a slow walk (not suggesting Magic does!) so we all attempt to slow up a bit until hopefully he'll get the idea when he has more balance.. |

Garnet, 14.2hh, did many miles with her friend Billy, 17hh ex-steeplechaser. She used to trot every so often on the road to keep up but it was never a big deal and they more or less sorted themselves out. Billy used to throw a complete tantrum if she tried to get in front of him - ideal spot was with her head by his saddle, which also made it easy for Sian and I to gossip. Off-road she could do an incredible extended trot and keep up with him, and galloping was brilliant - as long as he started off first and she didn't attempt to sneak past after he had pulled up! Happy memories as Billy is no longer with us and Garnet is retired. I hope you will have as much fun as we did. |

Gosh - just looked him up and he did alot of racing! In fact 43 times. He won 4 hurdles and 2 chases and earned just short of £60K. Bred by Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His last race was Jan 09 so he's probably still in racing/training mode!!! |

He's still very much in racing mode! She took him on the gallops last Monday and crikey he can shift! He was hugging the rails at full gallop like a bloomin greyhound. he is stopable though. They go out onto summer grazing on Sunday so hopefully he will fill his belly, chill out and slow down abit. |
