Does anyone know what paperwork is needed to allow frozen semen into the UK? the stud in the states will sort out the exportation documents but I will need to arrange the importation documents? Who do I call & what do I need?????
Don't know the answer, but sounds an exciting venture! Do keep us posted.
I seem to remember that when I got carried away when I first decided to get an arab that I looked at importing (!) mad I know when there are so many good ones here already. Anyway, I think I talked to DEFRA. So I did a quick google and have come up with:- http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/int-trde/imports/iins/genetic/genetic-a11.htm
Don't know if this is any good. B

From experience it depends when the semen was collected. I spent a very harried Friday afternoon before a May Bank Holiday chasing around only to find that provided the export papers were done I needed nothing else as this would be dealt with by the shipping agent
The only issue I had was that the only airport the semen could be shipped to was Heathrow
We imported several batches of frozen semen from the USA from various stallions during the late 1990's and eventually found the easiest way was to get the shippers to send with Fedex door to door. Fedex then flew it on their own planes and did all customs and health clearances before delivering to our home address. You then only have to arrange the return of the shipping container after having transfered the straws to your own storage tank.
This saved many hours of sitting in airports and customs offices but don't know if the system has changed now.
If you are using frozen rather than chilled semen, which you have to from USA, then when it was collected is immaterial.
Well Ive already spoken to Defra (thankyou) and they say that all I need is the correct paperwork from the states side (which the owners of Selket Marque will do of course) & I need to complete a form of notification so that the airport knows when to expect it.
The guy in the states is talking about in the uk needing an agent/broker or it will end up in the airport unable to be delivered?!?
He said he will risk it but it will be down to my costs or he get a company called airnet who will charge $1100 to get it here & do all the paperwork on top of the stud charges of $640 nad that didnt include the stud fee...crazy hey !
Hi - you will need to get some to clear it through customs this side. We usually get Twemlows to arrange this for us so you probably best speak to your vet to see if they can help.
Defra advised that semen collected prior to a certain date (about 10 years ago) does require a license but as Weirton has said this may have changed. I think this is because the health requirments have changed since then
Normally you would also have to pay a deposit for the semen tank. Personally I would advise the use of a shipping agent as there is nothing worse than waiting for the shipment to clear customs and the mare has gone off. Our vets arranged for the tank to be returned as they are experienced with shipped semen and the requirements.
